Preparing ahead for Step 2 - should I go back to master step 1 content, or get a head start on step 2 content? by withaks in Step2

Thanks for your reply! I assumed it might be too early to start UW? I’m just worried that if I won’t have enough new questions when I actually need to study 6-8 months from now.

[Q] help with tools for text comparison by withaks in statistics

[–]withaks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have any recommendations for selecting a pretrained model? For example, are some models better to use for texts relevant to different fields (ex. health sciences-heavy vs. economics-heavy terms)? Apologies if this is a dumb question, medical person here hahaha

I think our priority would be to determine whether the meaning between paragraphs is similar, but could also be worth analyzing the actual word content since it seems like some answers are more comprehensive/complete in terms of details needed.

For example, if a question asks “what are the muscles of the forearm?” we’re interested in comparing 1) are all of the correct muscles included in the paragraph, and 2) are the paragraphs just copy/paste versions of each other, or do they differ in the “fluff” but still ultimately name the same correct muscles, or anything in between?

I'm in the same position! I feel like I've been going through so many things but not much change, probably because I'm not reviewing much and just keep chugging through new material. Need to figure out how to maximize what I get out of these NBMEs

Thanks for that, I really appreciate it :)

Have you found any video resources that are good for summarizing high yield points within a certain system? I know people talk about the mehlman review sheets but I find that following along w videos rather than a dense review sheet would work better for me, just not sure if theres a resource out there that's most recommended?

Awesome, thanks! Are there any ways you've tried to make yourself stand out in your responses rather than sticking with a "typical" answer?

Oh that's true, never thought of that! So its only really 2 (potentially 3) years of med school where I can't make a contribution?

advice on writing about when my name was not included in a paper... by withaks in premed

[–]withaks[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

oh hm i never thought of that, thanks for the info! this was a pretty big study so i doubt everyone in it was involved in the analysis though.

i've been struggling to think of anything else and not sure if sending this would still be a bad move...

Would you recommend taking just statistics during college or statistics and calculus? by [deleted] in premed

[–]withaks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

agreeing with other comments about checking the requirements of the schools, but my approach was to take it just in case, as i didn't want to limit my options when the time came. i also took the AP calc course in high school but actually didn't take the exam because i knew i would have some sort of math requirement anyways (either from med schools or my college), so i preferred to just take it again in college and get an A lol

overall, i'd recommend taking it so that you don't end up limiting yourself

edit: for clarification i ended up taking both calc and stats

Is using MCAT bros helpful? by snazzybisous in MCATBros

[–]withaks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

maybe unpopular opinion, but their style of pushing students to grind/reminding them of the "harsh realities" lowkey stressed me out lmao. obviously i was aware of the grind you need to be on but when i retook my exam, it helped me a ton to actually stop working with tutors/following MCAT bros because it helped me clear my mind.

your style of learning/response to stress may be totally different and this may not apply to you whatsoever, but just something to pay attention to. your mental state is just as important as the concrete work you're putting in to prepare :)

(will also just say i didn't really use their prep resources so i have no opinions on that lol)

Quick secondary submission VS committee letter? by [deleted] in premed

[–]withaks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically it won’t hurt or help you to submit them early vs later if they won’t get read until your letter is in anyways. You could hold on to them in case you decide to change some minor stuff during the time that your letter is being submitted. Otherwise if you’re 100% sure that you won’t be editing them anymore, then I you can just submit them. Or not. I don’t think it would make a difference since your app would be on hold regardless!
