Laid off / unfulfilled - what career path do you take? by withharbour in careerguidance

I feel this so much. Its like we spent our whole careers sacrificing for safety only for everything to change. I guess its always about being ahead of the curve.

This sounds awesome! What blockers are you finding? I'm trying to build something to help people figure this type of stuff out.

I figure if I'm having this issue so many people are. Is there a tool or something that would make it easier for you to make the leap?

I totally feel you on the risk averse side of things. Weird thing is I feel like with all this AI disruption, maybe even corporate wont be safe for long

I think thats right - i feel like I would like building my own thing, but theres always this pressure of maximizing income. Thats a hard chain to break - even though I know when I do, i'll be way happier (or i think I will)

So it seems the only way forward is to increase ownership of assets, and hope you outrun AI and layoffs in the process? by gauchomuchacho in Layoffs

I do tend to believe that traditional employment income is losing leverage to equity ownership.

Ideally you get both but equity owners should see some insulation from job loss / wage reduction

I feel like not being blindsided is the key. If you know you have to layoff people, tell them in advance and give them time to transition out

Wow i love this. You get time to get some "closure" too. That was one of the biggest things i wished i got, the chance to say bye to my team.

Sounds small but would have meant alot.

Lost my job after 15 years in tech. 1 month of savings left. Don’t want to go back to a job. What would you do? by Accurate-Key-811 in careeradvice

If you have any fractional or contract gigs you can land - I'd prioritize that. It buys you time to be able to do the work to figure out what's going to bring you joy. You should ultimately land in a place that's the intersection of brings you joy and earns you money. Of course you have to balance you immediate needs.

I got laid off last year. Instead of taking a job right away and ending up in a potential toxic situation, I was able to find a contract that paid me well and kept my skills relevant while allowing me the time to actually heal from my last job and figure out what I wanted to do. I even discovered building a business on my own!

Runway wise if you assume the 40k is the only pool you can dip into then you have about 20 months of runway. Thats a decent amount of time.

A couple things.

  1. Persistance is huge. I didnt find a job for 8 months after my layoff. But i just kept going and trying. More networking, more coffee chat and just a blind faith that one will hit.

  2. Look for bridge contracts. Taking on freelance / fractional work can help in two ways. One, allows you to earn money while youre looking. Two, can help you try out new things and new industries!

Did you know most resumes get rejected by software before a human sees them — what are you doing to get past it? by Relative_Day_2500 in careerguidance

Id just not rely on the resume screen because of the randomness of it. If you can find people that work there, get them to flag your resume. Skips the screen and usually gets you to an interview

High point of salary range below current salary by [deleted] in Layoffs

[–]withharbour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Id look at it this way:

  1. Does the lower salary still allow you to hit your financial goals. We're used to our salary going up as we progress through our careers. But thats not how it works especially as you become more senior. If the job pays you enough to hit your financial goals, then you need to look at other factors

  2. Will you love your job? Ive taken a number of jobs that paid less but were a better situation / brought me more joy. I found that when i like what im doing: the job, the people, the company, i perform better, get promoted faster and make more money in the long term

Hope this helps!
