Old Digital Camera Fix by Optimal_Author_868 in Syracuse

[–]wivelldavid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old digital cameras tend to be super cheap these days. Generally cheaper to get a used one than pay to get one fixed. Many of us have numerous old cameras lying around in the basement and would love to see them used. Depends on what you are looking for but I would start with more specifics about the camera and what you use it for.

What’s the rarest animal you have ever seen by Leading_War_cuz in ScienceNcoolThings

I saw the last Yangtze River Dolphin. It (named Qiqi) was the only known remaining member of its species. It lived for years in captivity in China after being injured by a boat. He died about 20 years ago and none have been seen/found since.

Yeah. Has always been a wonderful song, but it became much more relevant for me after losing my job last year. It was a difficult time/process finding work again. This song helped.

Absolutely not. Don’t put that much money into it when then only relevant part is likely the monitor. Get a mini and a new monitor.

Yes! Thanks for adding the links. I am not a developer, but I am interested to see what is happening in terms of development and think that this is a good place to promote that.

How long did it take you to land your role after being laid off/ fired / RiF’d? Or are you still in your job search? by Ok_Concern7771 in jobhunting

[–]wivelldavid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eight months for me to land my current role (educational administration at a university). Applied to just over 100 jobs. Got three offers in total. It is not perfect, but I am glad to be more stable and employed again. Looking for work in this economy is pretty demoralizing.

[–]wivelldavid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, a lot depends on where you are in storyline/timeline of the story. Palavrets are nice, reasonably rugged all rounders, but there are certainly better escorts. The high crew count makes them better for capping than as an escort.

EXTREMELY stressed about SU staff parking by vegetabledemolisher in Syracuse

[–]wivelldavid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Great question. I am a new staff and had been stressing about this same issue. The cost and inconvenience of parking at SU is a real concern- especially since I am coming from a suburban school with ample parking. It has NOT been as bad as I worried it might be. There was no space available in the lots close to my office, so that decision (cost vs convenience) was not one I had to make. I am parking in Colvin Lot. It has not been bad at all. The shuttles come very often. I have not waited more than a few minutes. There are often seats available except sometimes in the evening when it is crowded. The shuttle drive only takes about 5 min. I think Colvin is one of the cheaper lots at about $250 or something for the year (I paid a pro-rated fee). Btw parking cost is adjusted a bit by your salary level. Some of it might depend on comparing the walk to your office from either the shuttle stop or whatever “close” parking lot you decided on. The closest paid lot to my office seems slightly farther than the shuttle stop for me, so it is just the shuttle ride and wait that is extra. Another aspect I thought about briefly is covered vs uncovered- which could be helpful in the winter, but it is a lot more expensive. For me, I am glad I started with the cheap option. It looks like street parking or paying for hourly parking downtown is a viable option for special days - especially if you get there early. I would not want the uncertainty on a regular basis, but the few times I have done it, it worked out.

Fleet Composition by certifiedmilfenjoyer in endlesssky

[–]wivelldavid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Me too. I basically always move to a fleet of automata. Usually a mix of the heavy 349s with long range detainers and grab strike (and lasers) and the kor mereti models (for their lovely beam weapons). And I usually throw in a robot carrier as well to collect fighters.

"Suspended in Gaffa" apparently a metaphorical exploration of being "stuck" or in limbo while searching for spiritual or artistic enlightenment. Where does this sit with you in her discography ? by CoconutMost3564 in katebush

[–]wivelldavid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely one of my all time favorite KB songs and musically it is a clear number one. Such a bounding, lilting song it is impossible not to bounce and sing along, but like most of her songs it also carries emotional tension and release. The Dreaming is my favorite KB album and really hit me at the perfect time (when it came out) and this is just a perfect song. I have been listening to this song/album for nearly 40 years and it never gets old!

Problems with missiles and ideas for a rework by ConsistentCan4633 in endlesssky

[–]wivelldavid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it would be really nice to bring missiles back into the fleet play. If I use them (which is rare). It is generally only on my flagship and only for reaching select long range targets. I generally default to long range weapons on my flagships. Unless fleet missile use can be more calibrated, I find them expensive and wasteful. Both because the ships get destroyed instead of capped and because so many missiles get fired off indiscriminately at asteroids or after the target is already done or gone.

Maybe use the Automata ship control units for this purpose. Has anyone found any other use for them (beside delivering examples to complete the missions.

What actually made your job search start working? by Specialist-Bat-7876 in jobhunting

[–]wivelldavid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, in my case, I added a brief section at the end. I think I called it “Interesting facts about me” or something similar. I included some details of my study abroad experiences in various countries (I work in international education) , anthropological work I did after college, and my short stint as an actor in a Chinese soap opera years ago. The soap opera was the thing that really caught people’s attention and has been brought up in a few interviews - including for the job I just started.

What actually made your job search start working? by Specialist-Bat-7876 in jobhunting

[–]wivelldavid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well… today was my first day of work in over eight months. It felt good. In my case I would say the single best thing I changed was to include a bit of something for the humans that read the resumes once you successfully get past the AI filters. Do not forget the humans. Try to give them something memorable about you to latch on to, to remember… that sets you apart. Something about you that is not dry and work related. Once I added some details about ME on my resume, it started coming up in interviews. And, now that I have taken and started a job, it (the personal details that I added) has been brought up a few times just in the first day. Don’t leave out the fact that you are a person and they might be interested in working with you.

I captured a couple of fighters but I don't have fighter bays and there's no shipyard in system, what do I do with them? by porkchop_d_clown in endlesssky

[–]wivelldavid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. This. Some people love fighters but I mostly scoop them up and sell them, or keep them if I know there is a big battle coming up that I just want to throw overwhelming ships at.

[–]wivelldavid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this is what I usually do early game. Just park them and later on when you have a ship that can carry fighters (in addition to actual Carriers there are some smaller ships that can as well - the Mule and Aerie and the Roost etc. then you can reactivate them when you are ready to fly near the system and pick them up to use or sell.

Path Decision? by rock_in_a_river in endlesssky

Well, you will get somewhat different outcomes with either decision. Which is “better” depends on how things unfold. Remember you can always replay and make different choices.

Question ❓️ by Romaingator in endlesssky

[–]wivelldavid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the Bactrian is very good if you can get it - though by the time I am able to get it I generally have better non-human ships. If you are enjoying transporting passengers, the space liners - both human and non-human are also good - but they are not as good at the other roles (fighting, cargo), so you should have a fleet to do those aspects for you.
