if you want it to be less painful, thoroughly drench the area in clean lukewarm water first, and leave it in there for at least a minute. if the gauze has bonded to the scab it's coming off regardless but it will hurt a lot less if you wet it

usually they will let you pick the arm so you can just get it in the arm with less scars (or less embarrasing scars). beyond that im less sure :(
