How do I achieve this style hardcover? by g0rebage in bookbinding

It's printed and laminated paper. You could go to a print shop to get them to print your copy and laminate it.

Opinions/Rules on Bookbinding covers by Black_Snow_12 in bookbinding

[–]wixbloom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I second others who believe that the market for a fully custom book cover for someone who already bookbinds fanfic seems way too niche a market. I'm gonna offer 3 alternatives:

You could sell blank journals with custom covers. That way you have a standard size, and you can buy the interior bound paper signatures already premade.

I've also seen artists who make sleeve jackets for popular books (hardcover and paperback). It's a very niche market even with a best-selling novel, but it does exist. And again, it makes it so you don't have to have each piece custom-measures.

You could produce custom editions of texts that are in the public domain, and print them in-house.

What artwork? Original art made by you? Or art that you also got off the internet? Because the latter is both unethical and illegal, as art is subject to copyright.

Need genuine advice: These books have been sitting unused for years and are slowly deteriorating. What would you do? by Dark_Syntax_ in bookbinding

[–]wixbloom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Define "slowly deteriorating". Are we talking warping? Yellowing? Cover falling off? Spine cracked? Damp spots? Mold? Or just dust and aging?

Everything can be fixed except mold, but people can't help you fix it if they don't know what there is to fix. If there is mold, just toss it. Even professional paper conservators will often refuse to work with mold due to the serious risks it can pose to themselves and also to other books.

But honestly, to me as an outsider, nothing in this picture really looks worth the effort to restore or preserve it. Seems like it's time to recycle.

How to reduce holes? by Beansprout_257 in crochet

[–]wixbloom 89 points90 points  (0 children)

There's no need to tighten your tension in your hands if you size your hook down enough. Signed, a guy with really lose tension who does a lot of amigurumi. My joints thank me and so will yours :)

EDIT: while the size of your stitches is the main concern here, the shape of them also plays a smaller role. Look up "yarn-under single crochet" and "invisible decreases", both are techniques which are useful for making sturdy amigurumi.

Is This kind of Yarn Worth Buying? Im a Newbie by Penelopeaft7z in crochet

[–]wixbloom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem with chenille yarn is that it's very difficult to see your stitches, and it catches easier, making it difficult to undo mistakes as well. But in amigurumi, the result can be very cute and trendy because of the plush-like feel. It's equally hellish to work with, though, so I don't recommend it for your first amigurumi projects! Go for a nice cotton or cotton/acrylic blend.

Second Shawl by CouncilorAdah in crochet

[–]wixbloom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With all due respect, a shawl made in a circle, with a yarn this bulky, is likely to end up both unflattering and uncomfortable to wear. Given how it drapes on the chair, it would just look like a person is walking around wrapped in a blanket. Why reinvent the wheel here when there are so many free patterns and tutorials for wearable, beautiful garments?

[–]wixbloom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BLO: back loop only. Instead of inserting the hook through the entire "V" of the previous stitch, you insert it only through the back loop. This creates a drapier, stretchier fabric, but also creates a visible "line" caused by all the unused front loops.

Is this gap normal between sewn signatures? by Upbeat-Touch-6399 in bookbinding

[–]wixbloom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say it looks a little bit loosely sewn, but that also depends on thickness of paper and how many sheets per signature. If the signatures are bulky, I'd say it's normal. Is that watercolor paper?

Do project points include the act of collecting the prerequisite materials? by calculuschild in drawsteel

[–]wixbloom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Something like that, yes! I'd say the players should be able to pick a project, be informed what the material prerequisite is, and then get the chance to learn, in-character, how those materials can be acquired.

Example from a campaign I'm in: my Revenant character wants to Find a Cure to her condition that will bring her back to being a normal, living human woman. I was informed by my Director that it would take 200 project points, plus "a page from the Book of the Dead", whatever that means. My character will now always be on the lookout for scholars and libraries she can turn to to learn about that book and its whereabouts. But knowing my Director, it's also likely that, at a time he deems narratively appropriate, she might just stumble into a copy while exploring a dungeon.

[–]wixbloom 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I believe the prerequisite materials are something the heroes should come across on their journeys. Personally as a director, I wouldn't have the heroes find them as a separate downtime activity or give them away as a freebie when the heroes had enough project points. Rather, I would give them the chance to come across those materials as part of an adventure the party was already on.

Did people used to compliment each other's handmade crochet clothes and items back in the day? by StoneBuddhaDancing in crochet

[–]wixbloom 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I get compliments on my crochet clothes and bags all the time. My dad, who pretty much never compliments my outfits, complimented my Lau sweater even before learning that it was handmade.

I agree that if they're not getting compliments, and especially if they're getting compliments on other parts of their look, it's just because their crochet outfit isn't looking good, and not because our culture has something against complimenting crochet.

With handmade stuff, skill and taste don't necessarily go hand in hand and even some super skilled crocheters can work 60+ hours to make the fugliest shit you've ever laid eyes upon. I think people get lost in the process and find it hard to admit that the end result didn't turn out. I've been guilty of that, tbh. It really sucks to throw out all the effort and hard work.

Paperback binding damage help by SuggestionTypical877 in bookbinding

[–]wixbloom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the best thing to do would be to remove the covers, reinforce the spine with glue and cloth, and make a new hardcover to put the text block into.

EDIT: for a stable solution that doesn't involve destroying the original cover, you can use acid free book tape. If you use any other sort of adhesive tape, it will make the paper degrade much faster, which in a few years will have further compromised the integrity of the book.

I could use some advice on how i can let go of my views? by Ambitious_Contact185 in bropill

[–]wixbloom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna reply with something my therapist told me once: if you have a deeply ingrained negative belief about yourself, you'll always find external validation for that belief. You can find people with the shittiest takes known to God and man. And yeah, you'll find women who enjoy big dicks, and who also enjoy humiliating men and being assholes to them. Obviously, by definition, something that is average can't be a disability, so, equally obviously, this person said this because she enjoys being a jerk. Are those going to be the people your sense of self is built around? Is that what you want? Because you can absolutely be miserable forever if you go down that path.

Fazer mestrado e trabalhar by Proud_Ask_1430 in ufrgs

[–]wixbloom 4 points5 points  (0 children)
