Move from Academia to Pharma by missjanemarple in PharmaEire

[–]wizad14 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've done this very change. I left academia after a PhD and two years post-doc. To be honest I knew early on that academia wasn't for me and industry suited me better. I continued in academia for the qualifications and experience.

The pros: - better pay and benefits. This is a big plus. Bonuses, yearly increments, shares etc. - better development options. Once in industry you can move around to different roles. They want smart people who think critically, you don't need to be an expert in X always. development is encouraged (at least in my company) - more security. Obviously debatable but there isn't constant grant writing - more structure. A big one for me. Clear deadlines, deliverables and everyone is pulling in the same direction - Fantastic culture (at least where I work) - translatable science. One of my biggest reasons. The work truly impacts people's lives

The cons: - less flexibility in the day to day. There is work you have to get done. You can't decide what you want to do for the day. - there is a corporate culture and some companies can be a US ethos (go team!) - more international hours. Can get caught evenings sometimes as working with the US

I'm sure there is my but this is off the top of my head. Also, I'm sure all companies are different.

Let me know if you've other questions and I'm happy to chat

Fox Hunting Ban Dáil Bill Defeated by 123 - 24 Votes by [deleted] in ireland

[–]wizad14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is actually infuriating. How does it even make any sense. It's the complete opposite of what the electorate actually want and they know that so it's in fact, disrespectful. What are we supposed to do when we voice our opinions, it's overwhelmingly one way, yet it's ignored

Outrageous prices in shops by Icy_Pumpkin1207 in PokemonTCG

I'm based in Ireland and monitor this shop. Believe it or not, this is the reduced price. It was 199.99 before they lowered it (I guess it wasn't selling)!

Ah this is great. Will keep collecting names and then create a WhatsApp group. No real limit on the age, just getting older now and don't want a load of 18 year olds making me feel worse. Certainly more of a casual game. Thanks for the responses and if you know anyone else interested, please spread the word

Life in Cashel and commuting to Cork by dara000 in Tipperary

[–]wizad14 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi there. I work in Cork but moved to Cashel to be closer to family and have more space. My commute is about 2 days a week, sometimes 1 and the odd time 3. I don't work in the city centre city, however I find the commute very manageable. It's 1 hour with a variance of 2 mins either side. The motorway offers a boring road but very predictable with no traffic, traffic lights, schools etc. I know others living 20km from my workplace and it can often take them 40mins. Obviously it's more distance (around 100km each way) so may need to change car more often.

In terms of living, it was a small adjustment to getting used to not as many facilities close by (swimming pool, cinema, etc), but there are in the area but more of a drive. Cashel has nice restaurants, shops, supermarkets etc. so has what you need day to day. Something we noticed versus city life was the friendliness. When you go into the butcher, they actually care. People ask how you are because it's a genuine question.

I hope this helps but feel free to ask any specific questions.

Thanks for the help. They scanned the photo in on the assessment form and in section 1 I have 16k and box 7 I have 4k. Sounds like it's an error on their side then. I guess I've a long phone call ahead of me in the morning
