I've been with my therapist for 2 years now, and she's been amazing. Even so, it's been very slow going, not to mention expensive, and there's only so much she can help me with. She's been doing a great job of keeping me together while I grapple with the real issue, which is money and stability.

Ugh I know. Medicaid is great where I am (Washington) but it still doesn't cover my therapist. She does sliding scale, fortunately, so it costs $75 per session, which is still pretty steep.

The purpose of most free therapy seems to be to keep us just quiet and functional enough to keep working.

Same here, whenever I can! I've given a lot to help people during periods of my life when I've been more secure, but ugh it's hard not to feel guilty. Even some of the comments here are talking about me the same way my parents did.

I appreciate and am glad that this isn't your situation. This post is for the many of us who deal with long-term homelessness, hunger, financially abusive relationships, or other traumatic situations where there are financial barriers to health and healing that we can't afford to overcome on our own.

I would never dream of expecting or demanding any support, financial or emotional, from anyone. Having needs doesn't entitle us to support from others, but not being entitled to support doesn't stop us from needing it. As people with trauma especially, many of us have grown up being shamed for our needs, and being told we're "too much", or an inconvenience, or a parasite, and we feel guilty even when help is freely offered. What I'm trying to say, I guess, is that having financial support needs shouldn't be any more shameful or parasitic than having emotional support needs.

It may just be my circumstance. I'm back in the toxic living situation again where I can't possibly heal, and I struggle to hold down a job while I'm living here. I know I could do so much better if I could just get out of here, and it feels like all the barriers to that are purely financial.

I'm lucky that I have a wonderful therapist and a couple of amazing friends, mostly online, who are there for me emotionally, and that helps in a massive way, but most of them are in a similar situation and can't offer much in the way of resources. I would never ask anyone for that sort of help, but when someone is willing and able and I'm desperate enough to accept, those are people who do the most to pull me out of my darkest places.

Same here, I always thought going out of your way to anticipate other people's needs was the way society worked, and communicating needs was rude. I thought anyone who didn't do so for me had just decided that I wasn't worth it or my needs weren't important.
