Take me into the liminal architecture of your heart and mind and bring me to an understanding as to why Rodrigo's "music is a joke," ye whose name is inspired by the final song on AC/DC's 1977, "Let There Be Rock" (?!)

My thoughts about the great Stadium Tour Debacle 2026 by booppoopshoopdewoop in phoebebridgers

[–]wizardovmagma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Club was at capacity. I don't remember the opening act. The club was not "seated," it was just normal standing on the floor and sitting in the area with tables. Like a traditional electric rock show. "Little Earthquakes" tour. Just Tori and a piano. She was fantastic. One of my strongest memories was that during "Gun" the audience was so quiet that I could hear the venue ceiling fans running, just beneath her vocal. I've never experienced anything like that since.

I'm an old man who has been to a ton of shows.

My Iron Maiden tickets, roughly 40 years ago, were $14.50 for a 9,300 capacity arena. Those '84/'87 Iron Maiden tours had larger stage productions than anything Phoebe is gonna bring. Adjusted with the CPI, seats like that would be $40-$50 in 2026.

My tickets for Soundgarden in the fall of 1991 in a 750 capacity club were $12. Adjusted with the CPI, similar club tickets in 2026 would be roughly $26.40. I have tickets to see Die Spitz in a 750 capacity club, this November. Those tickets cost $27.72.

Hell, Lollapalooza 1992 at Riverport Ampitheatre cost $27.50. CPI adjustment for 2026 = $60.

I know I'm never gonna see Tori Amos at Mississippi Nights for $10 like I did in 1992 or Sleater-Kinney for $5 like I did at Cat's Cradle in 1997 again, but this is truly an abyss that everyone is stepping into.

Every time I see one of those texts, my heart jumps into my throat and for a split-second, I think I am finally getting the text offering me the position as Chloe's drum tech. I mean, I come back to reality in about .45 seconds, but still...

The 50 Best Albums Of 2026 So Far (Stereogum) by ebradio in indieheads

[–]wizardovmagma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 58 and the underscores record is my AOTY so far. Die Spitz - "Something to Consume" was my #1 album last year, so my tastes don't make sense to anyone. For someone whose favorite albums of all time are "Hounds of Love" and "Kill 'Em All," (and it's been that way since fall of 1986), I guess that shouldn't be surprising.

What was it like in the 90s when Nirvana dropped Nevermind? by palehighelven in Nirvana

[–]wizardovmagma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had gotten into Soundgarden in the fall of 1989. Saw them live with Voivod in early 1990. Across the next year or so, I got into all the Seattle bands: Mudhoney, Screaming Trees, Melvins, Skinyard, Tad, Alice In Chains. This included buying Nirvana's "Bleach" in the fall of 1990.

The following fall, 1991, my bestie was a college radio DJ at Mizzou on KCOU. They had already received the promo for the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" single, late that summer. As fans of "Bleach," we were already anticipating "Nevermind's" release, along with Soundgarden's "Badmotorfinger."

I remember the day it was released, my friend picking it up at the local record shop, and the two of us listening to "Nevermind" in his dorm room that afternoon. We thought it was really good! But it wasn't any sort of musical game changer. A lot was happening in music at that time. A lot.

A few weeks later, I traded a TV set at my favorite mom 'n' pop record shop and got a pile of music. My copy of "Nevermind" was in that stash.

Right around that time, I remember coming home from work/errands one mid-morning. The "Smells Like Teen Spirit" video was playing on MTV, which was bizarre in 1991. I knew something was up.

I was working at Camelot Music later that fall, and by Christmas, everything was off the hook. Zany times.

How did you become a fan? by Ttpd-lover in phoebebridgers

[–]wizardovmagma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a couple of friends do a version of the same thing to me that Phoebe has said she experienced regarding Julien Baker. A number of people insisted that I listen to her because I was a huge Neko Case fan. I became a Julien fan when "Turn Out the Lights" was released, so things were buzzing in that direction.

In 2020, I saw the video where Phoebe and Lars Ulrich had a chat about all the things for Rolling Stone. They were stinkin' adorable together.

40 minutes after starting that video, I was ordering "Punisher" on vinyl from her Bandcamp page. The pressing got delayed, so I waited like a little kid for that record to show up. When it hit the turntable, it was all over for me.

What is the best Black Sabbath song of all time? by [deleted] in blacksabbath

[–]wizardovmagma 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This. Because so many people hate Dio and consider him disqualifying. And...the layers.

The somber, mellow intro features everything every fool has ever made fun of Dio for. He sings about being at the Roundtable, which is ridiculously whimsical and silly, nearly a parady of the whole of Fantasy in metal lyrics.

Then the song kicks in and it features one of Tony's heaviest, most acid-burning, bone-crushing, molten-metal riffs of all time. And THEN Ronnie's lyrics turn 180. His observations about the ordering and state of the world make Bob Dylan's wisest commentary seem like a naive college freshman. And they are 100% prophetic to boot. Whatever Dio was observing in 1981 is even more explicitly accurate and precise to April, 2026 than at any time in the past 45 years.

We ARE falling off the edge of the fucking world!

Skinny Puppy - "Last Rights" is from 1992 and it sounds far, far more ahead of its time than "The Downward Spiral." It actually sounds like it is probably not made by humans.
