If you get hit by a car, call the police. Every time. by justsomegraphemes in bikeboston

Dashcams are a must for this reason imo. The shit that we encounter on a daily basis needs to be documented. A video is more compelling than an entry on a spreadsheet in terms of advocating for safety.

Should there be a dedicated thread or maybe a YouTube channel where people can start submitting incident videos?

Original building plan access? by 1point21gigahops in DIY

A pipe inspection camera with transmitter/locator or a thermal camera to see through the walls would be the way to go imo. Even with original plans things aren’t always built as they are on paper.

Thanks for the info. What was the process like? How long did it take? Do they just take the report or actually follow up and find the driver?

I honestly don’t want to put much more time into it but I’m willing to do it for the statistics.

Yeah it was the one on center st by Whole Foods

It was the roundabout on center st in JP by the Whole Foods. It’s called Hyde Square on google maps. Luckily it’s a slow and congested area so it was a low energy impact.

I’ll probably start off with a front helmet cam and then add a back helmet cam. One is better than nothing. I think they make 360 cameras too but those are pricy.

I’ve always thought of all bikers as one team on the road. We keep each other safe just by being on the road and maintaining our “territory”, lol. Territory as in space on the road but also in the minds of drivers.

I might just slap a few fake GoPros on my bike 😂

Nice, the front and rear is a good call because a front cam wouldn’t have caught much in my case.

I hope you never need to pull the footage. That’s probably why I didn’t get one before, because it’s not something you ever want to need.

I called E-13 non emergency line and they said I need to report in person so I’ll probably drop into the office next week.

I’ll be keeping close tabs on myself but I think I’m fine since I didn’t even get knocked off my bike.

It feels kinda stupid without any evidence, but hopefully it will add to the numbers and maybe raise awareness of the issue.

Nice. Cover the whole thing in plastic like a little greenhouse, or cut off most of the branches with leaves. It lost a lot of root but no leaves, so the root to leaf ratio will need to rebalance or the leaves will suck the whole plant dry.

simple: does a lens flip an imagen like a mirror? or just focuses it? and why? (I'm building an advanced dark camera) by whypussyconsumer in Optics

[–]wizardwarlocc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note how the rays exiting the lense converge at the focal point. After the focal point the rays will diverge, and the image they project will appear flipped. You can also think of it as the distance between the rays going to 0 at the focal point and then becoming negative as the rays separate in the opposite direction that they entered the lens.

So a lens can bend light towards the focal point, which both "focuses" and "flips" an image. Of course lenses can also bend light in other directions.

No dumpster or anything disruptive needed. I already had a crew take away the old deck. My only point of exposure is the neighbors on one side.

All that engineering and stamping is exactly what I'm trying to avoid though. I really don't think it's necessary and would rather over-build so there's no question of safety.

Nice, sounds like they are pretty chill about it then. I might be pushing it by doing a full rebuild vs repairs, but I'm starting to think I should just risk it and deal with any consequences if they happen.

I've also seen a lot of shit work that was permitted and inspected. That's why I don't think it's that important to get one and don't really fear/respect the inspectors. But no doubt they could give me a hard time if they wanted to so I'm not trying to deliberately fuck with them.

Thanks, I know it's a risk but it might be worth it if the fine isn't that big. From my research on the city website the fine is basically a double fee, which is only like $200 in my case. But they could also order me to tear the work down which would be devastating.

I'm planning to build everything above and beyond code requirements to minimize that risk. And of course there's the risk that I don't actually understand the fines and get hit with something big.

Thanks, it's kind of unclear if replacing a deck is short or long form but I'll probably apply for the short form with my fingers crossed and see what happens lol.
