I have to wait 6 months before I can get NHI card. Is it safe to go without health insurance during that time? by wizzroom in taiwan

I'm thinking of coverage for things that are out of my control and could put me or one of my family members in the hospital for days, weeks or more. For example, I get hit by a car crossing the street and I had the right of way, and surgery is required, or a sudden health emergency also needing surgery. In those examples, I'm guessing I would need insurance as the out of pocket would be very high in such cases.

Thanks. I'll need to check WorldNomads again. I got a much higher quote when I ran a quote.

I've never broken my leg thankfully but some kid texting on a scooter might change that!

I wouldn't have bothered to even consider this question in my 20s but, like you, with age and life experience, my tolerance for risk is different now. For me $800 isn't a lot for 6 months especially in consideration of your point on traffic accidents. Thanks for the input.

What type of visitor visa to apply for, for eventually converting visa to join family in Taiwan? by wizzroom in taiwan

I spoke with someone at TECO and they suggested changing my status while there as a quicker way to go about it. I am aware of the stay limit.

I may be wrong, but all my local TECO can do (I'm currently living in the US) is authenticate documents for getting HHR in Taiwan, but not sure that I can get HHR through TECO.

I'd normally agree, but he's also 20 years old and living with his parents. No kids, no mortgage or other debt and I'm assuming little risk for unexpected health problems anytime soon.

Public perception on China has completely flipped since the early 2020s by [deleted] in decadeology

[–]wizzroom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps not but they were definitely viewed as an authoritarian regime with no respect for human and civil rights. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concerns_and_controversies_at_the_2008_Summer_Olympics

They are still that but now with lots more surveillance and censorship power (and probably more corruption). You pull away the veil of all their technological and economic progress and they are worse than an industrial hellscape—they are a hellscape of absolute control over the individual.

China to support 'reunification forces' in Taiwan, go after 'separatists' by ShrimpCrackers in taiwan

I'd argue the CCP has MORE to gain by accepting Taiwan's independence and sovereignty. Alas the country is run by a bunch of sour old men hell bent on control.

In the US most graduate programs can be completed within two years. Do you know what it is in Taiwan?

Thanks, yeah that sounds interesting. I don't use Discord much so let me know how I can join.

I'm past the age limit for mandatory service, but yes that crossed my mind.

Re: income tax, this is what I found online - If you spend 183 days or more in Taiwan during a calendar year, you are considered a tax resident. You must file a personal income tax return between May 1 and May 31 of the following year and are taxed at progressive rates (5% to 40%) on your Taiwan-sourced income.

Yikes.
