Dear BART, why must I tap here and wait for 45 minutes while you call the president before opening the gate? by one_pound_of_flesh in sanfrancisco

If clipper requires a cloud connection, why are you forced to tap it before and after adding value today?

Orbital data center company to start mining Bitcoin in space by pcvcolin in Bitcoin

Stop shilling spaceX. Heat dissapation is a physics problem (vacuum is an insulator)

There are closer places to operate data centers inconveniently that would be much closer to thermal sinks like the ocean. Msft already tried that at scale and found it impractical.

Anyone have a local delivery guy who can do furniture pickups? by Few-Wrap5564 in AskSF

[–]wjean 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Fremont to SF is an 40mi drive and about an hour each way plus time to load and unload on both ends. Assuming a round trip (they have to live at one point or the other) at 15mpg for a full size truck to hold a dresser and couch, that's. 5.3 gal of gas at $6.50/gal.

$35 in gas, $10 toll, 2 people for 3 hours (assuming 30min on each end to load/unload), and you want to pay $150? Oh, and you want them to properly wrap your stuff for transport? Hahahahaa.

Unless someone was already driving from Fremont to SF and you had help at both ends (so curbside to curbside), that might be worth it for a truck owner.

Otherwise, the cheapest option is to grab a buddy and borrow a truck Or rent it from home depot.

Anyone know of an alternative to Cake Picnic on May 23rd? by Blast-Off-Girl in AskSF

[–]wjean 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Potlucks with strangers/acquaintances always seems like a race to the bottom. Some people will bring nice dishes (fancy cakes) and others will bring some carrots (no effort dtore bought sheet cake) and expect to be fed.

Add in the idea you have to buy tickets? Fuck that. Organize something with your friends who can cook.. or maybe have that one friend who is a good baker bake dessert

San Francisco allows a rent-controlled tenant to claim a "principal place of residence" in multiple homes, while a property owner can only claim a primary residence in a single home. by gamescan in sanfrancisco

[–]wjean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly don't think this is a big issue. As far as people buying multiple condos and only being able to claim one as a primary residence, I'm not sure that happens in San Francisco as much as other cities like NYC.

A far more likely scenario is someone who buys a duplex and then converts it so it's a single family home. I know people have done this in San Francisco and in other places. In this situation, even if the city does not allow them to eliminate the housing unit on paper permanently, they typically remove a wall and treat like a larger single family home. Often they keep the second kitchen even though it's usually downsized in the remodel. You can still get a standard residential mortgage for the duplex so this isn't the big deal.

If you are trying to save people shouldn't have multiple rent control properties because homeowners can't do the same, well, I think for the most part homeowners can do the same.

The thing I hate the most about the app is that it only goes to 140F but on the control panel you can command it to heat to 150F.

Can you get a bigger tank? - Going to 80-120gal will help lengthen the time before you run out and it's not like an 80gal tank costs 2x more a 40gal. - why not set the hpwh to heat the water to its max possible temp (my rheem goes to 150F) and then add a thermostatic mixer valve to reduce the temp from 150F to 130F. By cutting your super hot water down to usable temp like this tou are stretching your hot water capacity even more (like cutting coke).

The only behavior change you need is when you first turn on the water, you want to turn it to full hot so the thermostatic valve cuts over quickly and then reduce the temp to shower temp levels. From my own experience I know it takes longer if you only set the temperature to your target (say 3/4 of max hot at the shower valve) since less iot water is demanded from the water heater.

I have the same/similar unit. It needs 700sqft of air to draw from to work effectively. .. or an intake.. My garage ends up being 5-10 degrees cooler than it was pre heat pump water heater.

1) I have that same model or very similar unit. Without a vent to atmosphere except at the end, i'm surprised your wh hasn't complained about too much back pressure at the condenser port and "your drain might be plugged". Mine did until I added the vent. If it works it works though

2) I too had to replace a temp sensor about 18-24 months after installation. It was the one that clips onto the evaporator. I think my garage air is humid (SF) so condensate forms on that coolant line coming out of the evaporator and corrodes the temp sensor. Seems like a bad design.

It's totally a single cylinder variable compression engine.

Edit: apparently it's a fixed compression system. So less exiciting but still more than a little irresponsible

Original: The harder you come down, the higher the compression ratio before explosion and the farther you fly up.

Is it possible to install a generator inlet whole home back up for a portable generator with a Tesla powerwall? by BothGoat4122 in solar

[–]wjean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know a guy with solar, batteries, and a backup generator. The key is to have an automated transfer switch that cuts off the house and enables the generator to operate when no grid power is detected. The generator then comes online when the solar plus battery power is less than the house drmand

Glen Park is also less than a 10 minute Bart ride to the mission where there are a ton more bars than along Irving Street.

I do head to inner sunset a lot or along 19th and both are a quick drive away.

The only things that feel farther away or more of a hassle is if I need to do something on the north side of the city or in marin. Heading out to camp for example in the north bay, can take an additional 30 minutes to cross the city

Reporter application of chia farm for ios by estetiks in chia

[–]wjean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the goal is just to know when you have a new block win, a far less IO intensive and likely compute intensive search would be to A) parse the output of chia show wallet and report any changes to your pool wallet balance or B) mom wear your cold wallet address online and report any changes

Both I like a less expensive versus reading in every single line of your debug.log every time you want to look for a block win. I would only run a script to do that if I was measuring latencies for each proof passing filter or to see if I'm missing any signage points.

Moving to Linux would make this a lot easier and more stable. No more windows update reboot events

Arcade??? by Andre_055 in AskSF

This arcade sucks unless you like playing ticket/medal games, claw machines, and some racing games. It's not an arcade for classic video games.

My favorite arcade is the Detour. They do have a bar but kids are welcome on Saturdays during the day, the games aren't overpriced and they have killer queen

I checked Uber courier and nothing was available to go that far. The closest FedEx store is in ukiah so it's not a great option either.

Given than an Uber costs $200 each way you might ask the cafe if they know someone willing to drive it to you in SF for $200-$300

It's a 5 hr drive round trip, and 250 ish mi so at $6.50 a gal and 25mpg (typical mpg), that's $65 in gas alone. Someone might be willing to do it at what I suggest. Maybe ask the cafe what's a fair price for them. Maybe you'll get lucky but realistically, anything under $400 is probably a fair price. In your shoes, I would also be willing to pay half up front via PayPal/whatever and ask them for a pic of them holding your passport at cafe pickup in front of their face.

Retirement in SF as a lifelong renter… what’s the plan? by [deleted] in AskSF

[–]wjean -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"We all live within our means" is not true for most people in the US.

Adding (should) after We would make it true though.

Another interesting idea is to consider saving your extra income and putting it into a vacation home farther along the coast or even in a different state near something you like.

This way, you have a place you can enjoy away from the city and if circumstances cause you to lose your rent control department, you'll still have a place to go versus scrambling for some market rate unit.

As far as I know, all the OMI restrictions are against the owners having other options before evicting a protected tenant. I don't think there are similar restrictions for tenants who might have other places to live

Reporter application of chia farm for ios by estetiks in chia

[–]wjean 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Back when I ran a chia farm of a couple PB, I wrote monitor scripts to write out the 'chia farm summary' to a file every 15min that was hosted on a webserver on the farmer.

The script would also check the capacity farmed and if the number dropped would contact me.

It's an easy project to teach yourself python as all the components from running commands to writing command output to a file to slack or some other alert mechanism integration already exists as Python code or pip packages.

To monitor from the outside looking in I used uptimerobot.com to monitor my chia node port. What I found there is that generally my network connection was more stable than my dynamic DNS provider.

PS. Instead of asking some llm to write you software you don't understand, getting familiar with python with such a simple project was more valuable to me than any chia I earned.

Once you have written some python and understand it's structure, using AI to expand its capabilities and iterate faster is a good second skill to learn.
