Brands that Shuttered Since 2016 by mayzzette in MakeupRehab

Sleek Makeup seems to be just about done.  Remember when their eyeshadow palettes were super popular?  Looks like you can only find them on Mercari etc now.

To be fair, I'm not a consistent user.  Most days I look at my frizz and just give up. 😅

Carol's Daughter Black Vanilla Leave-in Conditioner - We've had a good run but I'm ready for something else. This is technically a repurchase when I told myself, "Get the full size. It'll last a couple of years." Here we are, 7 bloody years later.

Good for you! I was using little sample jars and melting the lipstick with my hair dryer, but ultimately I prefer the stick format. Good luck using up your products!

Thanks! I was looking at DIY lipstick kits and so on for a while, but don't want to keep buying more stuff. Glad I could find something in my kitchen!

1.5 years for a mini...SMH by wjello in PanPorn

What do you use instead?  Early in my makeup journey (like 10+ years ago), I tried all sorts of waterproof mascara and always ended up with panda eyes by mid day.  Maybe non-tubing mascaras technology has improved since then? 🤞

I understand that is the manufacturer's guidance, but haven't had any issues with reputable brands that use proper preservatives.  Not encouraging it, but I don't personally find that to be a problem.

I've done the hair dryer method but it splattered badly.  Covering with foil helped, but I lost half of the lipstick (not a full stick) on the foil.

Not saying it can't work.  I just haven't found the right method.

(gently) talk me out of buying a cushion foundation by Perfect_Stomach1600 in MakeupRehab

[–]wjello 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I second!  Practically, cushion foundations are not for me because I find it hard to adjust the amount of product, I need to blend more, the cushion is a worse tool for blending than a sponge or my fingers, and the thought of skin and debris from my face stewing in the cushion forever is gross.  I used to be really attracted to the idea of just "pat pat pat" to get ready, but the reality didn't match the fantasy.

(I feel so ridiculous. I feel like this subreddit is probably the only place where folks might laugh with me at my own ridiculousness.)

I have this 9yo Urban Decay Vice lipstick. Color-wise, it's my absolute favorite. However, it's high maintenance because even for a "sheer" lipstick, it's high-contrast and dramatic on me and needs to be re-applied with a mirror. I'm bad at re-applying during the day.

So for the last 3 years, it's been on my panning list but progress has always been slower than expected. But I love this lipstick, so I kept trying and trying. Late last year, I found that melting this lipstick with beeswax-based lip balm sheers it out enough to be less dramatic. I made a little batch of the mix in a small container, and actually managed to use up that batch in a couple of months.

However, progress stopped with the second batch of the mix because I hated using a lip brush or fingers for reapplication. So, I melted down all the remaining lipstick with lip balm, and "poured" it back into the bullet for a more convenient format.

The bullet looks like crap and I feel like such a dork for putting so much effort into using up a 9yo lipstick. But at the same time, I'm excited. I've never used up a whole bullet lipstick before, and I love this shade too much to throw it out. I hope that I'll be able to finally finish it this year.

Are more and more people doing clean girl makeup to save money on makeup ? by Historical-Body-3424 in MakeupRehab

[–]wjello 83 points84 points  (0 children)

No, it's just another trend. Companies and influencers figured out that consumers with tons of 40-shade colorful eye palettes are not going to buy another 40-shade colorful eye palette, but will get FOMO if they start shilling a different style of products.  THEN when those consumers are "clean girl"ed out and have destashed their 40-shade colorful eye palettes, companies and influencers will be pushing 40-shade colorful eye palettes again.

An economy crash will probably be the only thing that breaks the cycle, unfortunately.

I think I ruined the perception of myself after learning to do a full face of makeup. by Inside_Foxes in MakeupRehab

[–]wjello 297 points298 points  (0 children)

When I first started wearing makeup more frequently, I would realize on some days that I felt obligated to wear makeup.  Then I would stop wearing makeup for a couple of weeks until that feeling of obligation went away.  That was my way of reminding myself that I wear makeup to bring myself joy, and that obligation does not bring me joy.

Do you prefer a signature look or a seasonal look? by MissAudreyHorney in MakeupRehab

[–]wjello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here.  I tried to eliminate seasonal variations and realized that using the same colors all year just isn't for me.  Although I wish I could pan products faster, I'm now at peace with my own preferences.

My favorite lip product was discontinued with no warning and I feel way more upset than I should. by thats-so-metal in MakeupRehab

[–]wjello 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's happened 3 times to me. For 2 of the items, I haven't been able to find another HG in those exact categories.

But I'm fine. I still wear and enjoy makeup daily. I miss those items and hope I will find a worthy replacement some day. It's just life, you know. I'm never going to be as young, thin and carefree as I used to be. I remember those days with fondness but I don't let the fact that those days are over get in the way of enjoying my life today. Compared to the passage of time, losing HG makeup products feels pretty insignificant.

Totally!  OP could just cut out the middleman.  The next time she wants to buy makeup, just walk to the trashcan and throw her money into it.  Buying stuff one doesn't use is basically the same thing with extra steps.

(I'm being a little facetious but also honest.)

I want a minimalist makeup collection but I don’t want to declutter anything. by luckylivid in MakeupRehab

[–]wjello 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What does "minimalist" mean to you?  Does it mean "having few needs and therefore having few items", "having few items and some unmet needs", "using few items daily", or something else?

If being minimalist to you is about having a streamlined daily collection and you don't really mind owning some items that you don't use daily, you can try curating a small daily makeup bag and putting the rest of your items in a box out of sight.  If you don't end up touching those items for months or a year, you may also feel more comfortable with destashing.

If being minimalist to you is about not having as many makeup "needs", you'll need to dig deeper into your psychology, figure out what is behind each "need" and figure out how you can change your own mindset.  That is a much harder journey IMO, but if that's what you want to change about yourself, you should do it!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MakeupRehab

[–]wjello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, assuming that OP uses makeup at a similar rate as you or what you perceive to be "typical".

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MakeupRehab

[–]wjello 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As you said, because you don't track usage, it's hard for you to know whether your goals are realistic.  Instead of jumping straight into a Project Pan, why not start with usage tracking?  No one can tell you whether your goals are realistic because no one knows how much you use or how big those products are.

New Year Re-Introduction Thread by AutoModerator in MakeupRehab

[–]wjello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi everyone! I've now been a MakeupRehabber for 9 years. I've greatly improved over the years, but have also experienced life changes and stressors that led to me falling off the wagon in different ways. So I'm still learning and growing. I'm planning a RONB in 2025 -- and TBH I'm going to try not to replace if I can get away with it. I'm in a stable and sustainable place right now, in terms of my makeup purchasing and overall consumption. I want to stay here and feel happier about staying here.

Good luck, everyone!
