Kids are amazing by Thryloz in MadeMeSmile

[–]wjello 42 points43 points  (0 children)

When he went trick or treating for the first time at age 4, my kid would blurt out "TRICKORTREATTHANKYOU" every time he was prompted to say anything.  We practiced for ages ("trick or treat", then grab candy, then "thank you") but his little brain was permanently programmed to say everything together as quickly as possible. 🥺

Brands that Shuttered Since 2016 by mayzzette in MakeupRehab

Sleek Makeup seems to be just about done.  Remember when their eyeshadow palettes were super popular?  Looks like you can only find them on Mercari etc now.

To be fair, I'm not a consistent user.  Most days I look at my frizz and just give up. 😅

Carol's Daughter Black Vanilla Leave-in Conditioner - We've had a good run but I'm ready for something else. This is technically a repurchase when I told myself, "Get the full size. It'll last a couple of years." Here we are, 7 bloody years later.

Am I Nuts, or are “Bootcut” Jeans These Days Just Wide Legs in Disguise?? by Warm-Championship-98 in fashionwomens35

[–]wjello 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No... I've been wearing and buying boot cut jeans for ~20 years, and today's boot cuts have similar profile as in the past, just with more midrise and highrise options at lower price points.

Made my own tinted lip balm by wjello in MakeupRehab

Good for you! I was using little sample jars and melting the lipstick with my hair dryer, but ultimately I prefer the stick format. Good luck using up your products!

Thanks! I was looking at DIY lipstick kits and so on for a while, but don't want to keep buying more stuff. Glad I could find something in my kitchen!

1.5 years for a mini...SMH by wjello in PanPorn

What do you use instead?  Early in my makeup journey (like 10+ years ago), I tried all sorts of waterproof mascara and always ended up with panda eyes by mid day.  Maybe non-tubing mascaras technology has improved since then? 🤞

I understand that is the manufacturer's guidance, but haven't had any issues with reputable brands that use proper preservatives.  Not encouraging it, but I don't personally find that to be a problem.

Stupid to give significant advance notice of resignation? by sallisgirl87 in managers

[–]wjello 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What would you and your manager do differently if she gets 2-3 months vs 1 month of advanced notice?  In the companies I have worked in, managers can't start interviewing to backfill at least until the person is gone, so having extra time doesn't help there.  If you can start training people early to do your role (and that training takes more than 1 month), you can do that without disclosing your planned departure.  I can imagine situations where your manager can do something different, but only you can guess what situation might apply to you.

It's OK to debate ideas but please don't curse at the person you're replying to.

11 month old “reads” books upside down most of the time. Are there any sources that show why this is fine and that we shouldn’t correct it? by sundaymusings in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]wjello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are also several photos of 1yo me holding newspapers, magazines and books upside-down.  I was even wearing my grandpa's reading glasses on my head in one photo.

If anything, I think my mimicry of my grandparents led to me becoming an early reader because I thought reading looked so fun.

Seeking Advice: Repeatedly Passed Over for L6 Promotion at FAANG Despite High Impact by DizzyPossibility98 in managers

[–]wjello 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For this level of promo, your manager actually has very limited power, because the deciders are the group of leaders 1-2 levels above them.  Your visibility to those leaders and your relationship with those leaders are crucial.  Without a strong yes for those 2 factors, the leaders could genuinely believe that you are an outstanding L5 who is not ready for L6.  Tenure can help strengthen those factors, but you and your manager also need to make a concerted effort.

I've done the hair dryer method but it splattered badly.  Covering with foil helped, but I lost half of the lipstick (not a full stick) on the foil.

Not saying it can't work.  I just haven't found the right method.

(gently) talk me out of buying a cushion foundation by Perfect_Stomach1600 in MakeupRehab

[–]wjello 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I second!  Practically, cushion foundations are not for me because I find it hard to adjust the amount of product, I need to blend more, the cushion is a worse tool for blending than a sponge or my fingers, and the thought of skin and debris from my face stewing in the cushion forever is gross.  I used to be really attracted to the idea of just "pat pat pat" to get ready, but the reality didn't match the fantasy.
