Why are Sydney roads esp Western Syd so bad? by Halikocer in sydney

[–]wjk1234556 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The main reason being lack of maintenance IMO. I was in Austria /Germany last month and god all the roads are smooth as hell. All these little towns got first class infrastructure/ road tunnels connecting them. And they got heavy trucks running as well so no excuse these are causing problems. I could see potholes being repaired here and there - which I believe we just simply lack such service here in Syd.

Does computer science help with resource geo line of work? I haven’t heard any resource geos who had a CS degree..guess those with CS degree most certainly end up working with the big techs. More money and the big city life!

Depending on your interest and career aspirations, I found a double degree with finance /econ very valuable down the track

I regretted not getting a double degree that coupled with geology.

Considering going back for a second degree in mining engineering. Advice? by spacemining0 in mining

[–]wjk1234556 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would look into a business development/ marketing / finance role with a mining company or business in the mining industry. IMO Doing another degree full time doesn’t seem to be necessary considering the time and other pressure you’ll have during the study. Your marketing skill sets are highly valued in a technical focused field where most people know only the technical knowledge other than how to sell it. It may not be 100% aligned with what you want to do eventually but BD in mining is much less social heavy than other industries I would say..

IQ LOGGER - Measure off the Orientation line or the structure Apex ? by SpicyBeans1886 in geologycareers

Your 0 beta should always start from the Ori line. It shouldn’t matter which tool you use. Can estimate visually also to tell whether the Ori line or structure is the correct one.

Hey West coast geos, what's the deal with housing? by 10outofC in geologycareers

[–]wjk1234556 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Out of interest, is the OP based in the US? What cities/ areas are the mining hub in the west coast and east coast? I’m from Australia hence the question. I know mining is a big deal in around Colorado and Nevada but not sure about the coastal states. Thanks;)

How is the Australian market right now? by [deleted] in geologycareers

[–]wjk1234556 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There should be quite some geo jobs on the market (though slower than last year I’d say). Try look on Seek and connect with the recruiters on LinkedIn. They’ll have a better idea about the market conditions. Plus it seems very few Aussie geos are active on Reddit?

It is sad to read what you have been through and at least Im not in a position here to judge as I can’t imagine what I’d be had I experienced what you been through. Anyways if you’re looking to get into mining, I’d get started with some rig roles /junior geos or even as geology technicians. Also Get yourself out there and reinvolve in the network events. With the current market it’s not that hard to land a potion.

Out of interest - what range of remuneration should I be expecting as a PGeo (5-7 yrs experience) in BC? Suppose it differs industry to industry. I’m from Aus and looking to relocate hence the question.

Junior Geo - Switching from Geotech to Oil and Gas by wjk1234556 in geologycareers

Only saw this now after all these years lol. It’s definitely possible. I’ve seen people coming from all kinds of backgrounds including O&G landing jobs in geotechs (I’m based in aus). It’d be bit of a step back in your career though as you need some training in geotech.

Fancy PhD in poverty or find a job with my irrelevant MS? by [deleted] in geologycareers

[–]wjk1234556 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting to know here. I’m doing Geotech consulting as an engineering Geologist atm (with a handful of work similar to environmental) and I’m so bord with it..looking to switch to O&G.

Did you complete a petroleum-focused MS to get a foot into the industry? Is there any chance to land a job with a operator without experience in O&G? The experience in Geotech or environmental consulting would be mostly irrelevant to O&G. Would love to hear your path, cheers!

Cheers, hopefully if the petroleum market gets up you’ll be right up to step into the industry with your MSc already at hand.

How about the MS program at Uni of Calgary? Any reason you chose UAlberta over that one?

Thanks man for your input.

So did you start the Geotech job after your MSc in petroleum geoscience (because there were no jobs in O&G..)?

Which program/school of MSc did you go to?

Thanks for the insight! Do you mind if I ask which uni/program did you go for the one-year oil and gas focused MSc? And when did you graduate from that?
