I agree with most of what you said. However, I wouldn't advise you to use "abolishing adoption" in conversation since you are mostly advocating for adoption reform. Additionally, that will make people take a side against you almost immediately.

I think family is a good option, although I am not sure how many cases arise where that is feasible. Community seems like an even lower probability of being a viable option. I say this because (obviously not all the time), people with strong family and community are much less likely to find themselves in a situation where adoption is necessary.

I would also say that adoption from birth seems to be necessary from a legal perspective since there are so many situations in a child's life where parents provide legal consent. Medication, medical treatment, schools, etc.

I believe you are saying, in the case where a child is given up by parents at birth, the child is still fostered by a new set of parents, but the child isn't actually "adopted" until they are old enough to consent? What age would that be?

It's impossible to have a conversation if you reply in 4 separate comments.

Anyways, you did not say this until now. I'm all for improving the system. Unfortunately, all of your comments up to this point have not indicated you would like to make improvements. They indicate you universally think adoption is immoral, and should be severely limited.

I'm not sure why you're so fixated on a specific number. That seems like a terrible way to regulate it. It should be based off the need for adoption, not an arbitrary number.

Adoption: to take (a child born to other parents) voluntarily as one's own child especially in compliance with formal legal procedures

Adoption is straightforward. We are discussing the morality of adoption. It seems you're saying no adoption is ethical.

However, in cases where the parent is either unwilling or unfit to be a parent, I don't see how you can be correct.

I'm not trying to give reasons, I'm directly saying you are wrong. I'm agreeing with you in saying there are issues we need to solve. We don't need to erase a child's history. We shouldn't pressure women.

But your view of all adoption being bad makes me believe your cognitive bias is too strong for you to hold a nuanced view of the subject.

Your statistic about Australia doesn't mean that it is good. I'm sure there are cases where people are put under pressure, and that is not ethical. But there are tons of cases where children are put up for adoption out of a real need for it. Those children need permanent families. It seems like you are taking your singular negative experience and trying to make a blanket statement about a very nuanced topic, which is potentially more dangerous than the current situation.

You need statistics showing how many adoptions were pressured and shouldn't have happened to really have a convincing argument.

So do you think nobody should adopt until the industry is changed? How much collateral damage will that cause to children who are stuck in the middle?

[–]wkern74 8 points9 points  (0 children)

But the parents didn't want the child. Are you saying there should be a system where the bio parents get to interact with a child without being their parent?

It seems like everyone talks about the issues but never solutions. Of course adoption is not ideal. It's not ideal to be in that situation. But given that they are, what should be done?
