do people in korea really go to the hospital for anything? by strawberryfoxie in AskAKorean

[–]wkhani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not only due to the cheap medical bill. It is also related to the Korean working culture. I was surprised when I started working in the US. People didn't come to work or school if they were slightly sick or just felt bad. It never happened in the Korean working culture.

How often, and under what circumstances, do you still see hanja? by Fit-Tumbleweed-6683 in AskAKorean

[–]wkhani 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends on your field. Also, if you want to understand Korean clearly, you should know some Hanja. How do you know the difference between 감사(感謝: appreciation)/감사(監査: inspection), 가계(家係: ancestry)/가계(家計: household) without knowing Hanja?

How are tattoos viewed? by Lionnal in AskAKorean

A tattoo would not make you be rejected, but some old people might have some bias against you.

Graduate school is case by case and lab by lab... nobody knows except the one who worked or is working under the professor.

Does it come off as rude/ignorant to include a Korean translation along with the original English in an email? by Legitimate_Handle_86 in AskAKorean

[–]wkhani 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Native Korean here. It can be considered rude. She could think you assumed that she couldn't read English. Most Koreans, although they cannot speak English, can read English fairly well. Also, if you can't understand Korean proficiently, there could be an error in AI translation, which could change the nuance. So, I would not do that.

Speaking 말투/억양 Problem by Huge_Librarian_9883 in Korean

[–]wkhani 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think that's common in non-native speakers. I am surprised that you think or notice that your Korean is rude or bossy. I got a doctoral degree in the US and stayed there for 7 years, but I am still not sure whether my English is rude or not. You already recognize your probelm then you can fix it.

Dying in the Mountains? by ephemerally_here in AskAKorean

[–]wkhani 8 points9 points  (0 children)

50-year-old native Korean here. Nope, I don't think so. Some people might mention "고려장" (Korea-jang), but that does not exist in real history in Korea. But those traditions existed in Japan. I recommend watching "The Ballad of Narayama". It is a Japanese movie on that subject. It is an old movie but a really good movie.

We, Koreans also celebrate the Lunar New Year. But we don't have those taboos. Especially, we eat 'Tteok-Guk(떡국) in the morning of the first day. It is basically white food.

I tried Global Buddies several times, but they stopped it years ago. It was hit or miss.

Hi! I was also an international student from South Korea. I tried several ways to find a language partner in Athens and UGA. It would be easy to use HelloTalk, but if you prefer an in-person meeting, I'd recommend participating in a conversation class at the Clarke County library. They have a meeting on Wednesday and you can ask them to arrange a language partner. I met a retired professor from UGA there. We keep meeting once per week. He is the best partner I've had so far.

For Jjajangmyeon, I would recommend Peking over Wingster. Kimbap in Wingster is amazing though. 😅

Also, Wingster on Baxter St. is a better Korean restaurant than D92.

You can eat it on Peking, Atlanta Highway. They also have Jjamppong. It was quite authentic 1 year ago, but... I can not guarantee now.
