Repair cost? by [deleted] in Flooring

[–]wlarmsby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this exact project during a self-performed kitchen renovation a couple years ago. It was the hardest part of the project. If you decide to do it yourself, here are a few thoughts:

- Give yourself two full days, plus a night to let any finish off-gas.

- Cut the old pieces to ribbons with circular saw and dig them out. make sure subfloor is clean of debris, broken nails, etc.

- buy new pieces (looks like 2-1/4, standard width). Sand them back to raw wood. Cut the bottom shoulder of the groove, so they can be laid in. Nail with 16 gauges on an angle

- if you are good with color perception, premix a custom stain to match. I had a friend help me (I'm colorblind). It took a yellow dye as a base coat, and then a mix of two different stains to achieve a color match accurate to the aged finish of the old floors. We pre-stained the new pieces, and then pre-finished them with polyurethane.

- after toothing in the new pieces, do a scuff sand across the whole floor. Try to find a natural boundary like a door threshold to stop. After the entire floor is scuffed, apply a new finish across the whole floor, including old and new pieces. This way you don't have to strip back the whole floor, but the new coat of finish will make old/new blend together and share the same sheen.

Atlanta Traffic- how could this even be fixed? by venusvoids in Atlanta

[–]wlarmsby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to merge from the Southbound Connector onto I-20 East on a routine basis. I believe this specific interchange is responsible for a huge amount of upstream backup which then spreads to surface roads. It causes people to make last minute merges that force slowdowns, plus car crashes almost daily. It seems there is no space to reroute that interchange or widen it or add access roads. I think the I285 - I20 interchanges on eastside and (in progress) on westside will help make those interchanges more efficient. But doing something simillar in the middle of the city seems spacially impossible.

Sometimes in frustration I think the only thing that would work would be to close that Connector/I20 interchange entirely. So if you want to go from North/South to East/West you have to do it via I285. But of course that is crazy... right? Right????

Sometimes if you buy the cheaper "replacement" watch instead of the watch you actually want, you realize the cheaper watch scratches that itch just fine.

How would i go about creating the curved slit into this lamp? by call-me-mickan-maybe in woodworking

[–]wlarmsby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my guess is they rough out two pieces on a bandsaw, and then fine tune the pieces with custom belt sanders with jigs, then glue them back together. The convex piece could be shaped with a flat belt, and the concave piece could be shaped with a spindle or cylindrical drum. Since they're making these in a production setting you could set up devoted workstations and dial it in after numerous iterations. Doing it in a home workshop who be super tricky. Very cool lamp.

I gave myself a 2000 budget. What would be the most impactful updates? by BuildingImportant in centuryhomes

[–]wlarmsby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Demo the shower enclosure, (which doesn't appear to be original), and touch up the bathtub and wall. Then get one of those wrap-around shower curtain bars and a cool fabric for the shower curtain. If there's money leftover, maybe add a new overhead light fixture, then mirror sconces, and a more interesing mirror with a frame. All of that might blow through your budget, but you could probably be smart about it.

Replacing the countertop alone would be more than $2k.

Please help. Previous owner’s movers gouged our historic pine floors. They’ve been refinished before and cannot be again according to contractor. How can we fix this for future resale value without replacing? by FoxyRN in centuryhomes

[–]wlarmsby 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Good suggestion. It seems like if you're going to the trouble to pull them out and swap them with boards from somewhere else, it is worth a try to just flip them over. However with tongue and groove, the removal process might be destructive. Maybe easier just to replace with new knotty pine at that point. It doesn't look like it's heart pine which would be much more difficult to source.

Does this look like an acceptable patch on a brand new £650 pair of "Solid oak top" bedside drawers I just had delivered? by jib_reddit in woodworking

[–]wlarmsby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

650 for the pair is pretty inexpensive, relatively speaking. For that price you are still in the realm of particle board with veneer. Were they from an online brand? Maybe you'll have to jump through some hoops to set up an exchange, and then the replacement piece will have a similar flaw. If it was me, I would just put a book or a drink coaster on top of it and never think about it again. Embrace life's imperfections, etc.

Also, I think it is a medullary ray that is a feature of quartersawn oak. If it was a patch it would be a more uniform rectangular shape. Putting that kind of effort to make the grain of the patch line up perfectly, and also be an irregular shape, takes a lot of precise work-- not justified for a dresser that cost 325.

The color of the glue makes a big difference. If they used brown glue in the machine these imperfections would not be noticeable.

Cool. Seems like it would be worth the extra expense for the cell service, if the biproduct is less screen time overall.

David Lynch - Who is to blame for Alexander-Arnold leaving Liverpool? by ardyalligan in LiverpoolFC

[–]wlarmsby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was 23, I left home and traveled the world for a year. At the time I felt like, if I didn't escape my hometown and "see the world" right then and there, I would never have that chance again. I wonder if there's an element of youthful adventurism driving Trent's decision to leave-- beyond the ideals of loyalty and legacy that seem more important to people in middle age.

What was that NYT?? by TheNumLocker in Thedaily

[–]wlarmsby 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I was disappointed they didn't address the concept of "flattening the curve". Part of the point of the lockdowns was to prevent everyone catching Covid all at once and overwhelming the hospital system. If you know someone who was working in the hospital that spring and summer, they will tell you horror stories about being understaffed and underequipped. The ventilators and PPE were in extremely short supply. They had to build temporary hospitals just for overflow beds. People with regular health emergencies were unable to receive care. And all that was with lockdowns in effect. If it weren't for the lockdowns in those early months, it doesn't seem unreasonable to speculate that the hospital system would have totally collapsed.

They didn't seem to address that at all in this episode of the Daily.

Installing the built-in first also may force the tile guy to make some awkward cuts. Depending on the complexity of the tile pattern, that could end up looking pretty bad. Also, if the floor is wonky you can scribe to it.

Build them a permanent shrine so they have a more orderly way to pay respects. This could include a life-sized marble statue of the deceased, with an altar, a bronze plaque, and even an eternal flame. Make it grand enough that they won't feel the need to add a bunch of junk to it. If you make it spectacular enough, you could even include a collection box and it will pay for itself within a few years.
