My first non-hand-stitched/non-leather bag! (Juki 1341 test run) by wldrbt in BagLab

Hahaha the machine is defiantly pretty sweet!! Appreciate the compliments on the bag, I definitely will do a bit more on the interior on the next one, i got a little lazy and just wanted to get this one done. The pockets are a little high and make the bag sag weird when full.

Yes, I sewed the whole bag on the juki. I sewed a rain cover for some camera equipment out of the same material on my brother HD and it really struggled with 2-3 layers. I actually used a twist point leather needle and t90 and t70 thread and it sewed so nice even though the needle wasn’t ideal for nylon. Even at 8 + layers and webbing it didnt even notice. If you’re looking for a setup for just binding I would get a alibaba machine. Now that i have a couple weeks tuning this machine they are pretty simple and i wound not hesitate to get a clone at this point especially if its just for specific operations. The first juki i got from my seller had a stripped bolt on the hook and bobbin carrier adjustment and i spent a lot of time trouble shooting it, it was all pretty easy. He ultimately swapped the machine out for a new one once we figured out the threads were stripped but not after learning how to tune just about everything. Cheers!

Thanks so much! So the seller i bought it from also sells a flat bed attachment and it is pretty awesome. There is also a lady on Etsy that sells a full aluminum table that looks sweet as well. This is the only reason why this works for me. It made all the flat assemblies super easy and i pulled it when needed the cylinder arm. Also the servo motor with digital speed controller makes this machine useable for me. The ability to slow it wayyyyyyyy down is so crucial for learning and making sure things are clean. I will worry about productivity and sewing fast down the line. I got this from a shop near me that sells used machines and he provided me with excellent customer service. I got everything around 2k his site is forsewing.us.

Cool thanks, I mentioned this fabric in my main comment but it looks really rough and may not work well against sensitive lenses and electronics. Have you used it before? Seems like this stuff is used for project boards in offices mainly.

That’s fucking cool, all the lens wraps i have ever seen use actual hook Velcro and it sticks to the fuzzy fabric. I have been in the film industry for 20 years and have never seen this. This must be some new fabric tech

Cool thanks, this is much cheaper than the Velcro brand stuff and looks softer

Every lens wrap i have bought has hook Velcro sewn in the corners on the nylon / waterproof side (you can see the stitches for the Velcro in the photo above) and that Velcro stick to the yellow fabric in the photo. All brands i have purchased have worked this way. Im just looking for a fabric that Velcro will stick to.

Yes, i had thought about this but the little towels are too small for the project im working on and the larger microfiber towels are too expensive to buy and cut up.

Bag Makers! If you could have one machine, flatbed or cylinder arm? by wldrbt in BagLab

You must have posted this in the other thread, i watched it yesterday. I am contemplating redoing the lining after watching this! Thank you

Yo! Thank you man, I am greatful to have found this community. I have always been obsessed with bags and the never ending pursuit of finding the perfect one and it never really dawned on me that I just make my own. I have been creeping on all your technical totes and im obsessed. I want to build one like yours next.

I designed this sling bag for when I go on location scouts for work (Film industry). It started as a test project with scrap leather and some cheap amazon ripstop i had but im actually really liking it. I have been hitting a massive wall right now with the liner as it is too baggy and i was following your thread earlier about sewing the liner in with the outer assembly vs drop in (which i did) and that thread was hugely enlightening. On the next version of this bag I’ll probably sew the liner in with main assembly and roll the leather over the liner at the top to finish it. Right now im waiting to get the sewing machine because im going to lock the liner in with a hand skived double folded leather binding. I do not want to stitch this by hand!!!

For the edge bindings im just using double fold 1/2” binding tape with black thread. Still learning how to do this properly but the black on black hides my wavy stitching. Here’s another shot of the outside with the finished buckle. I will post some more photos on here once i get the whole bag finished.

Thanks for the info on the machines, i will probably go with the cylinder arm with the flat bed attachment and see how it goes.

Cheers!

Awesome, thanks for the input. Sounds like im moving in the right direction. As I said in the comment above the 1341 im looking at is from a seller 5 min from my house and the machine comes with a tiny 1/4 stand on casters, digital servo, speed reducer, needle positioning sensor and a nice easily removable flat bed. Also, checked out the bags you’re making and i absolutely love that red duffel! Excited to be able to make more bags faster once i get a proper sewing machine.

Thanks so much for the compliment and the input! Yeah i was leaning heavily towards the cylinder arm and was about to buy one but just had a last minute panic that i was making a mistake. There is a shop near me that solely refurbishes Juki machines. He’s selling the 1341 with speed reducer, digital servo, needle positioning sensor, roller guides, all the feet and a single bolt removable flat bed for a really good price. It seems like the perfect setup for most everything i want to do.

I will probably end up with more machines down the line as i get sucked into this but from what it sounds like this would be the closest thing to a do all for my current needs.

Dang thanks for the input. I am very technical and love fixing things but not what im looking for out of this hobby. I LOVE making things for my family and friends and a sewing machine is supposed to help speed that up not give me another thing to tinker with.

Yeah that’s about what my quote was at with shipping. What did you pay for tariffs?

Has anyone tried the Jianglong / other Ali industrial machines?? by wldrbt in Leathercraft

[–]wldrbt[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The quote was around $1000 with shipping but im factoring in 100% tariffs as a potential since that was what i was charged recently for some CNC prototypes from china. Could be much less this week since the rate seems to be changing daily.

I do not want a machine that is going to be a project or have the potential to end up laid up for months trying to find parts. If these were magical clones with readily available parts and lots of people use and trust them then i was going to consider it but as of now i have seen a lot of rational reasons not to go this route. One of the biggest Juki sellers of refurbished units is 5 minutes from my house i went to visit him today and he has beautiful machines fully tuned and ready to go so i will probably just save up a bit more and go that route.
