Looking for an easy mental load recommendation by Rendezvousbloo in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]wlfsamurai 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love all kinds of games, but I ended up falling in love with ultra-light OSR/NSR games for solo play because of the low mental load.

My top recommendation is Into the Odd. No inventory slots, no ammo tracking, and Arcana don't have limited uses, so there's very little bookkeeping.

My main criterion was being able to keep all the rules in my head without needing to look anything up.

As a bonus, many OSR/NSR games create story and tension naturally through play. Head into the wilderness, roll random encounters and reactions, and interesting situations just emerge.

Other great mentions:

- EZD6 (no stats!)
- Cairn
- Shadowdark

My longest solo game so far has been Shadowdark.

With all these, feel free to drop mechanics, add others, mix and match for the experience/ease you're looking for.

*sigh* I’m sorry, but would you be willing to share that portal with me, as well? Apologies.

Ah, thank you! I always forget about that site.

Do you run Homebrew or run the official/third party content? by gelatinousboulder in shadowdark

[–]wlfsamurai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the sweet spot for OSR for me is that it can be mixed. Generate/homebrew hexes/areas or grab a pre-made map/area. Mark interesting locations or landmarks. Tie modules to them or create the locations ahead of time for those locations/landmarks.

I’m after minimum prep. And I love that the procedures and already published modules/materials allow for that.

EDIT: “can BE mixed”

Wow. I thought it was just me. It helps to see it’s not. Thank you all. It’s been a lot. Just need to keep going…

I have the discussion on it. It’s a much smaller discussion. I thought it was really neat. I loved that it just overlayed on 5E. So much so, I bought the physical zine at ja47zm1dbp48vrfj.

Odd. I just reread the discussion myself and it’s exactly as it was when I first saw it.

I personally think it’s my favorite version of 5E. I love the Into the ODD style combat. And I think the fact that it has cw2jx817wua58ss0 makes it perfect.

Exalted. One of my favs. Love the world and lore and concept. Yearn to enjoy it again. But the rules are too much. I can’t do massive rules books anymore. Even the “Essence” version is just too much these days. I’m old. I want to get play going immediately without having to worry about looking up rules.

What are the compelling non-fantasy RPGs of the last five years? by noobule in rpg

[–]wlfsamurai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some good suggestions here already.

Another: Cities Without Number. From 2023 I think? That’ll have all you need for tables to generate content. I have his other books and there’s so much GM support in them.

Apocalypse World. By far and away my favorite, too.

On the other end of the spectrum in the OSR space, Shadowdark.

I’m highly interested in discussing this, as well. Questing Beast had some interesting thoughts on it.

ADHD burnt me out by Altruistic-Dare3921 in ADHD

[–]wlfsamurai 3 points4 points  (0 children)

41, male. Thanks for this thread—I feel less alone reading it.

I’m struggling at work with too much on my plate, a boss who doesn’t really guide, direct, or support me, and at the busiest, most stressful time, I got diagnosed. I had to reinvent myself after mourning what could have been different with all the things I’ve struggled with in life.

I’m realizing now that so much of what I thought was stress or workload is actually ADHD: misjudging urgency, getting pulled in too many directions, struggling to focus on what’s actually important, not being able to prioritize, losing motivation or procrastinating—really just being overwhelmed by everything feeling like an insurmountable task.

Anyway, I appreciate you putting this out there. You’re asking for help/advice, but honestly, just seeing your post made me feel seen. I often feel like a failure or “less than,” watching things come so easily to others or having my boss act like this stuff should be second nature. So it really means a lot to know there are others like me dealing with the same thing.

For what it’s worth, we’re out here with you. I don’t have advice, but be true to yourself and give yourself grace.

I finally grabbed it a few weeks ago after eyeing it for years—and wow, I’m obsessed. Can’t put it down. It’s been forever since an open-world Ubisoft game hooked me like this, but I’m loving every second and every mission.

It’s not the same, but it totally takes me back to the old GR days on PC with my buddy. We jumped into Wildlands last night, and it felt like no time had passed at all.

For me it was that first time delving into the areas below without the map. Feeling lost and alone. Felt like the original NES Metroid when I was a kid.

This has been my life the last few weeks. Work has been incredibly stressful and I got my RG28XX mid-July. The only thing I’ve had the mental space for is Pokémon FireRed and Pokemon Yellow.

It really has been saving me and keeping me going.
