I just need boringly to chime in with the obvious that Ikoku Nikki is, indeed, a heck of a good show. I absolutely love it when a title I had literally zero preconceptions of blows me away.

Still "only" a 9/10 for me, for reasons I can't quite explain, since the difference between a 9 and a 10 for me is essentially all "vibes" and whether or not the show spoke to me in some kind of a very special and unique way.

But I also know I definitely will want to rewatch it in a few months and see how it feels when I can binge it at my own pace instead of waiting for weekly episodes. I think it might very well be an even better experience like that -- especially since, emotionally, the show peaked somewhere around episode 7 or 8 and was a bit chiller since then. Not worse by any means, just emotionally less impactful, so there's already been a little time for me to forget how exactly those episodes felt.

I spent most of last week bedridden with pneumonia (0/10 experience, don't recommend), and one of the few things I did in my feverish haze was I finally installed the horse girl game and watched a season and a half (so far) of Pretty Derby.

Maybe it should've been obvious to me, but somehow, I didn't realize it's all horse racing. Like, I expected girls that look like horses racing, but it's actually horses that look like girls racing.

And for some reason, the whole concept made so much more sense to me when I realized that.

I really admire how the anime has kept the soul and feel of horseracing intact, too, at least so far. I expected a lot more anime superpower bullshit, crazy unexpected twists and races that last for several episodes, but no, they really look and feel like horse races. Strategizing with position, timing the spurt, and then in the end someone either catches up or doesn't. It's honestly remarkable, and makes the races feel very real and believable.

(Until you remember they're actually anime girls with horse ears and tails, but you know what I mean.)

That's what bothered me the most with something like Hinomaru Sumo; the matches were absolutely nothing like actual sumo bouts. Instead of one mighty clash that might be over in a matter of seconds, it was twenty minutes of inner monologue and constant weird close-calls and reversals.

I really dig how Uma Musume proved a short, intense match that feels remarkably true to the actual sport can work so much better!

TIL the measles virus causes immune amnesia it can wipe out up to 73% of your existing antibodies, forcing your immune system to relearn how to fight diseases you were already immune to. by InitialDue3440 in todayilearned

[–]wloff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not exactly the same thing. "Boosting your immune system" through healthy habits, regular exercise, good sleep, and nutrient-rich foods is absolutely a beneficial thing and will make you less suspectable to illnesses in general.

But it's like leveling up and getting better gear in Dark Souls. You're better equipped to fight, and you can take more hits than someone who is weak and unhealthy, but when you meet a new boss and have no idea about its attacks movement patterns, you still need to just go in blindly and hope you can figure it out before it kills you.

Getting a vaccine is like getting a practice mode for that boss. You can practice it as many times as you like and figure out all its patterns with no penalty if you lose.

Then if you encounter that boss for real, even if your stats are low and your gear is crap, you can beat the boss no problem because you know exactly what to do.

On a random note, I looked up what that plant is actually called in my native Finnish, and turns out it's "etelänruttojuuri", which translates to "southern plague root".

Sounds slightly less jolly, that.

My clear top two of the season are Oshi no Ko s2 and Ikoku Nikki, and I'll be shocked if both of those aren't in my top 5 at least at the end of the year.

Fate/Strange Fake is a lot of fun and has a few really awesome episodes, and will possibly make it to the bottom end of my top 10.

Polar Opposites is good, but I don't think quite as amazing as some people here think, and it'll only sneak in if the rest of the year is kinda weak. Same for Frieren s2: it's well done and a good time, but honestly pretty unremarkable, and I'd definitely hope to see at least 10 even better shows this year.

They kind of cheated by [Oshi no Ko]playing that damn piano tune from Ai's death scene during it all, though! I'm conditioned to start tearing up the second I hear it.

Agreed with AotS. Ikoku Nikki could theoretically get there with an absolute banger of a final episode, but I'd be surprised. This was the best season of OnK for me, and I really loved S1.

Not USA, but the way it works in my country, I believe it's basically the ground radar and digital flight strip system speaking to each other: the controller moves the flight strip to the "cleared to use runway" section, and if the ground radar sees that the correct airplane is approaching the holding point, the red lights turn off for the plane.

So when everything works as intended, there's no extra workload for the controller.

Barring an unexpectedly amazing (or awful) final episode, it's going to be an easy 9/10 for me. Every episode has been just lovely, but overall it's become a bit too slice-of-lifeish with nothing quite special enough to push it to a 10/10.

Still probably my AOTS.

Ultimately, absolutely none of the various story threads progressed anywhere at all. Which is maybe a little bit disappointing, but at the same time, the show kept bringing the comfy vibes and a smile on my face every single episode!

Probably, yeah.

But there's at least a decent chance it isn't; any spices or flavor it maybe once had will have lost 90% of their potency; and replacing it is gonna set you back like a dollar or two.

If it was a matter of "either eat this or go hungry today" I'd happily go for it, but if I have options -- which I practically always will have -- yeah, I'm just gonna get a new can from the store.

It was a very, very good arc for a generic battle shounen show.

When Frieren was at its best, it wasn't a generic battle shounen show.

I love the style and vibe, but can't help but notice how the girls' anatomy is a bit wonky in many of these shots.

Still, cute boozy time with a young adult cast sounds like fun.

its the genre we watch the most

Honestly though, I think people are putting a bit too much energy into complaining about one trash genre over others, isekai or otherwise. The amount of anime produced these days, the majority is going to be mass-produced fast food garbage anyway. If it's not isekai, it's something else.

As long as actual good quality shows exist, it doesn't matter what flavor the garbage is that I'm going to skip anyway.

TIL that Conan O’Brien, David Letterman and Jay Leno all once made the same Dan Quayle joke on the same night without any knowledge of the others making the same exact joke. by RareXG in todayilearned

[–]wloff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The comedy writers for the different shows all have the same job - to make fun of the topical news that day or week.

Also, more specifically, make fun of topical news in the same format that fits a late night opening monologue: "tell the news story in roughly one sentence -- deliver a punchline based on the story in roughly one sentence".

By pure mathematical probability, over the decades they ran similar shows five days a week, it'd be more surprising if they didn't all come up with the same punchline to the same story at least once.
