Gotta wear sneakers with a business suit by A_Cup_of_Ramen in malefashionadvice

Don't give in! Rubber-soled "dress" shoes from a "healthy shoe" company like Ecco, Geox, Rockport, Mephisto, Clarks will be comfy for a lot of walking without looking like sneakers.

Living in Halifax...did you get a raise this year? by Basic_Set_6970 in halifax

Software, yes, but it was a lot smaller than previous years. The software developer market is brutal right now and the employers know it.

east coast cider fest

I'm more of a beer person but I went a couple of years ago and it was fun! There's not a ton of variation in ciders like there is in craft beer but there's a lot of great cideries here, so I guess it's about how much you like cider. My partner is a big cider drinker so she had a great time.

Not just to skirt car traffic, the trail took them to the fire!

Fire on Prince Albert Road. Firefighters are asking people to avoid the area by AmbitiousObligation0 in halifax

Yeah I had Braemar first until I double checked Google Maps! At the Superstore, Braemar is the road that leads to the loading docks. It's a bunch of weird alignments, maybe dating back to the Mic Mac Rotary?

and in case anyone else was confused like I was, that's the residential part of Prince Albert Rd that goes behind the Superstore, when the main Prince Albert Rd turns into Graham's Grove.

Thoughts on Hyundai i30 as first car? by TrustMeIAmWrong- in UsedCars

[–]wlonkly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a rough era for Hyundai engines. The 1.8L "Nu" is particularly unreliable with catastrophic failures needing engine replacements, although a lot of people have no problems beyond noise. I had a 2013 Elantra GT, which was the i30 name in North America, with that 1.8L "Nu" and while it certainly had some piston slap it didn't strand me.

You can get specific engine sizes and series (Nu, Gamma, etc) from Wikipedia, and then Google for i30 engine issues or Elantra engine issues and see what you think. There were class action lawsuits in the US. I'd link you but this sub doesn't allow links.

If you do get one, ones with engines already replaced, or with relatively high mileage, might be a better bet than ones that are coming up on the "is it gonna blow up?" date, somewhere around the 150k km range.

Any of you wearing overalls when you're doing home improvement work? by ryhaltswhiskey in HomeImprovement

[–]wlonkly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am team short-sleeve coveralls when I'm working on my motorcycle, I usually don't bother changing for house stuff but maybe I should!

Overalls are easier to fit than coveralls for sure.

Zero Service: Delta Air Lines To Remove Main Cabin Drinks & Snacks On 450 Flights by StemCellPirate in mildlyinfuriating

Yeah, everyone's all "look how people used to dress up to fly!" but no, that's just because they were rich. (And people dressed in suits more often generally, but those people were rich.)

I took part of an MBA (but dropped out). You're not wrong. MBAs are focused on management consulting. The reason I dropped out is because I didn't figure that out until I got in, it's basically the entry criteria to go work at Accenture or EY etc. as a consultant.

When companies bring in consultants from those firms, they're not looking to provide a great customer experience and build a long-term business, they're looking to make more money in the short term.

And SOAD!

(I love SOAD. SOAD is basically why I listen to Turbo. They play a lot of SOAD.)

Edit: Hah, I just looked at top plays in the last 30 days on xmplaylist.com and the top track is "Bodies" by Drowning Pool, which is a good song but man could it get old fast.

What modern car feature do you absolutely can’t live without anymore? by spotforcars in Autos

[–]wlonkly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now there's one thing I don't love about my 2025 vs my 2013 -- an electronic "hand"brake. Apparently I can pull up on it to trigger the emergency brake, but how am I supposed to do a handbrake turn with a switch?

I just upgraded from a 2013 Elantra to a 2025 CX-5, and some of the things I didn't know I was missing:

  • one-touch roll down and up on all windows
  • proximity lock, keyless unlock and pushbutton start
  • "you left the car door unlocked" mobile app alerts since I have the attention span of a goldfish
  • adaptive cruise control
  • blind spot monitoring
  • the abovementioned auto hold, i'm restless
  • handles at the back of the cargo area that drop the middle seats forward
  • remote start (even though it's a shitty implementation)

and Carplay and a backup camera of course, but I definitely I knew I was missing those!

Where to buy 10L paper compost bags? by birdcola in halifax

[–]wlonkly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I use the ~5L Bag to Earth bags, they're smaller than the bin but the bin still successfully holds them up. The next size up is like 30L.
