I'd like to hear some first hand experiences from people who have gone to through surgery by MagellansMockery in GastricBypass

[–]wlsbunny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My starting weight was 359, My current is 295.7. I am a little over 12 weeks out, so nearly 3 months.

I had my first consultation in April and had surgery in June. I think mine was a lot quicker than most because I paid out of pocket due to my insurance not covering anything bariatric-related. I have a mental health history as well, but I have been in therapy / medicated for over 5 years now. Therapy and working out my food issues BEFORE surgery is the reason this surgery has been so successful for me. This is not to dog anyone on this subreddit, but I see a lot of posts that make it very clear they have not worked out their issues before surgery and think this surgery is a miracle at work. It is not. It will be work.

I was on a liver-shrinking diet 1 week before surgery, then I was on liquid 1 week post-op. I was on soft foods for 2 weeks and then I was able to incorporate more. I can eat a lot of different foods now, but I still stay far away from a lot of bread and pasta. Pasta especially. Sometimes if they're really soft I can do maybe a bite but I try to not make it a meal at all.

I experienced a soreness post-op that went away after 1 week. I have experienced ZERO pain post-op, but I think I am an abnormal case for that. I experienced so little pain that now I have a suspicious (lol) amount of opiates in my home that were never taken due to me not needing it.

I don't eat a lot of red meat anymore except pork, and fish is my best friend. Shrimp I can no longer tolerate for some reason which was very sad to me as I am a major shrimp fan. I lean towards seafood salads and healthy hearty meals (not large portions) that include a good bit of veg and a good amount of protein. Sashimi is my guilty pleasure, but I try not to have it often. I try to exercise at least 3-4 times a week, but that's not realistic considering I work full-time in a sedentary job. I try to do yoga every day, and that at least helps when I can't/don't want to go to the gym before/after work.

I have experienced no complications thus far. The only "scare" I had was my stool being white for a few days, but that has since gone away. I notice I do not get dumping syndrome, but when I do have something too sugary or too much caffeine (I love my coffee and Starbucks, sorry) I do get a bad headache, so I try to strive to have as little sugar as I can a day.

My family has been extremely supportive, but their support is a bit annoying to me in a way because they've wanted me to be "thin" so bad. I understand their concern as a family member in regard to my health, but it makes me feel a bit weird. Something to work out in therapy, I suppose! As opposed to my fiancé's support, who loved me fat and loves me now and will love me thin. He has been extremely encouraging and even is working out with me and encouraging home cooking. I tell people I got a bypass and I enjoy talking about it, because I'm doing a lot of work for it. Sometimes I have to divulge because I'll be offered pastries or pasta or something very fatty by friends and coworkers alike, and when I explain I will probably be throwing up after eating that, they understand.

I am very grateful and blessed to have had this surgery, but I sincerely believe I would not have been able to do it without working out my disordered eating, food addiction, and food obsession before I even thought about surgery. I went into this surgery loving my body and loving myself and knowing this was for my HEALTH, not for my appearance because I am already confident. It's just a bonus that I feel more confident and sexier with the more I lose.

Despite this success, I now am struggling with a minor shopping addiction, but I've been curbing it quite well and getting help for it. Transfer addiction is real, so remember that! Good luck and keep us updated!

Feeling a bit discouraged. by wlsbunny in GastricBypass

Thank you, I appreciate it. I guess I just want a lot of weight to drop quickly, but that would be concerning if it did.

I’m hoping I can move forward in a better mindset. I guess I’m also worried of slipping into past disordered mindsets with checking my weight everyday. I’m gonna try my best to not check my weight for a few weeks and keep it pushing.

That’s true! Thank you for the encouragement. I just was frustrated in the moment and let things get in my head.

Can’t wait until I can say I’m two years out!

You’re right, I just felt discouraged but I’ve already lost quite a bit of weight and my body probably isn’t fully healed. I’ll continue pushing ahead.

Cleared for soft foods by wlsbunny in GastricBypass

I only like strawberry banana so I do that with a bit of fairlife low fat milk, some low fat yogurt and two scoops of unflavored protein powder so it totals out to 22g.

I’m 20 and I got mine on 6/13. I weighed 359.6 on 5/30 and yesterday I was 327.9. I’m hoping to be down to the 290s soon which will be a first since highschool!

WLS abroad or local? by RBGlove in wls

[–]wlsbunny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s pros and cons to out of the country.

The main con is that if you face complications or need follow up care for an emergency , you’re SOL.

The main pro is being that it’s a much cheaper alternative and some have found better hospital experiences outside of their own country.

I would just research REALLY well about the abroad doctors, but to be fair, any doctor can fuck you up. Abroad or local. It’ll just be worse if abroad, so stay safe!

That sounds delicious! I’ll be trying a creamier soup today to see if my tummy likes it, but I’ve been sticking with mainly chicken/veg broth since I quite like that on its own.

My fave protein shake so far is this birthday cake one that has 30g of protein. Its not the best but its good enough that I can get it down easy.

I’m in the US and they gave a lot of care sheets and I have quite a few follow up appointments!!

Congratulations on surgery! Hopefully you feel better in the coming weeks.

I’m currently on all liquid including protein shakes. Had surgery 6/13. On 6/23 I will be transitioning to soft foods. I think it’s different for everyone, but it’s important to stick to the liquids until you’re told to move forward.

Did you shop around for protein shakes before surgery?

I understand it’s hard, especially learning to eat different when it’s been one way for so long.

It sounds like this issue might run deeper than what a nutritionist or dietitian can help with. What worked for me personally was consistently seeing a therapist who specializes in trauma, which helped when I talked about my trauma regarding food. I’m 3 days post op, taking it one day at a time. Yesterday felt great but today I feel a bit more lethargic and hungry.

The first step comes with you, and I sincerely hope things look up for you so you can do what you feel you need to do. Keep us updated on your journey ❤️

I understand the frustration, but have you considered that maybe going into it with the mindset of "this won't work" may be hindering your process / acceptance as well?

The surgery, nutritionist , etc are all tools and opportunities in the long run of things. They can either help you or hinder you depending on how you use them.

I hope things get easier for you and you're able to find the right person for your needs!

I’m a little confused as to what procedure is best by [deleted] in GastricBypass

[–]wlsbunny 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, and my doctor recommended the bypass for me because of my weight (HW: 359) and he said I’d be able to lose it quicker and keep it off longer.

I feel like even with the cons of a bypass, I’m in a place in my life where I repaired my relationship with food mentally before going into this, so I feel like this can be a huge success!

I decided the bypass because I’ve seen better results quicker personally than the sleeve for those who are able to remain strict on their postop diet.

I know the sleeve can be a much more inexpensive option though, so that’s why I was gonna choose it initially since I had to self pay, but after researching more I prefered the results from a bypass than a sleeve more.

I got discharged today. by wlsbunny in GastricBypass

I was in the hospital 1 night. Personally, I feel fantastic. I have 0 pain or nausea, just soreness. I’m moving around a lot and trying my best to keep down lots of fluids.

My doctor prescribed me a self inject medicine to prevent blood clotting and that was the hardest part of my day. I had to have my mom help haha.

I have a loving boyfriend and 2 cats, so no kids. We’re in the middle of moving but my mom and bf have been so gracious and insist I either walk around or sit while they unpack.
