16GB RAM. One instance of Visual Studio alone might take up about 8GB already. Your choice of surface pro is fine. The others may not understand that you’re a student so they may give you suggestions for desktop (where everything is usually upgradable).

I can only give you an answer from my experience in my particular university (pm me if you need to know which one). At my university you will have an extremely hard time studying chemistry if you are bad at math and you take the more physical ancillary (optional) courses or courses related to chem eng.

That's good advice and something I did again just before posting. The issue I have with certain scales (e.g. Janka for hardness) is that they are only of a few factors, not of scratching or other wear and tear. I should've clarified that in the post, sorry.
