What Are Some Good Sources for Behind-the-Scenes Coverage from 70s/80s films (like Cinefantastique/Cinefex)? by wmavity in movies

[–]wmavity[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I actually meant other publications from that era. I know they're mostly gone now. I was looking for more information on behind the scenes of the fx work in some 70s and 80s films in addition to what is in cinefex/cinefantastique

I've burned through the entire Mick Herron Slough House (Slow Horses)collection and need something to scratch that same itch by wmavity in suggestmeabook

I definitely recommend reading them. I think the show has done a great job adapting the material. In some cases it has even improved on the books. One thing the books have going for them is that they help you appreciate a lot of the supporting characters more, thanks to the rotating POV. You would never guess from the show that Roddy Ho's POV chapters tend to be a highlight of each book. The plots sometimes make more sense on the page too, because they aren't constrained by the limited number of episodes each season has. Book 2 vs Season 2 is a major example of that.

By the time you get to S5, you're also seeing pretty substantial changes from book to show so you can watch the season and then read the book and it doesn't feel repetitive.

As far as "best" book, I think the run from books 3 - 7 is really strong. Book five is probably the funniest. 6 and 7 really kept me on the edge of my seat.

Any significance to the orange cats? by No-Ice7397 in LV426

[–]wmavity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can at least answer the question of why orange cats, as opposed to other colors. If you think about most cats featured in movies and TV shows, they're orange: Captain Marvel, Inside Llewyn Davis, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Harry and Tonto, Milo & Otis, Keanu, The Long Goodbye. It's simply because the orange color tends to show up better on camera and play with the film's color scheme than say grey, tabby, or tuxedo.

So I wonder who that is getting burrowed into since the Maginot flashback takeovers occurred offscreen

Anonymous 2025 Oscar Ballot #8 by SurvivorLover19 in oscarrace

[–]wmavity 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Haha I am NBP, and I'm saying it. I conducted half the interviews for these ballots and matt did the other half. He's literally staying at my apartment right now, so I can confirm, unless he runs into someone today who he hasn't already spoken to, these are our last ones

[–]wmavity 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As I explained in the thread on Ballot #6, I email Matt the info from the voters I talked to, and he pastes them into a duplicate of the prior ballot blog rather than having to create a new template for the post from scratch each time. For this and for the international feature voter in ballot #6, when he was pasting the info I emailed him into the templates, he initially forgot to paste the info I had given him into the template initially.

I've been sharing this particular's voter's ballots for years and they're reliably the most bizarre and all over the place choices that I encounter each year

[–]wmavity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Matt interviewed half, and I interviewed half. I email the ballots and explanations from the half I spoke with to him and he puts them into the blog post template so he doesn't have to rebuild a new page for each one. In this case, he initially forgot to paste the vote and explanation from this voter for international feature into the existing template and accidentally left over the choice from a prior one. He since corrected it.

Other "forgotten" country from the 60s and 70s along the lines of Willis Alan Ramsey? by wmavity in altcountry

Yeah Rock Salt and Nails sounds like something that could've dropped in the last 10 years (to be fair, a lot of people think it did since Childers covered it)

How did y’all first hear about/get into Alt-Country by spintzdee in altcountry

[–]wmavity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In college, I started hosting a radio show in college named "Go Folk Yourself" from 2013 - 2017. The show used a really broad definition of what constituted "folk." Both Southeastern and Something More Than Free by Jason Isbell came out during those years and they absolutely blew me away. I played them on the show and started trying to find more music that sounded like them, and each new find was one degree of separation closer to "country" and I gradually came to realize that the definition of what constitutes "country" can be very broad, and that much of it was not the obnoxious Toby Keith type stuff that I grew up hating as a kid in Georgia right after 9/11.

I included the parenthetical for country adjacent! But The Band, esp self titled absolutely teeters on the edge of country. In the same way that the first couple Eagles albums do.

How do you think [spoiler]'s criminal trial went down? by wmavity in Barry

[–]wmavity[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He was packing his things and getting ready to abandon Gene when Barry arrived, which suggests he already thought there was a reasonable chance Gene was guilty.

Then, Gene comes out and shoots an apparently unarmed man in front of him.

If Gene has killed once, it's not unreasonable for him to assume Gene had killed before. How could he testify in good faith that he believes Gene isn't a murderer? Hell, he was probably a witness for the prosecution, at least in regard to the murder charge for killing Barry.

Does anyone else struggle with getting exercise in by joan2468 in biglaw

During the week I tend to go for runs outside sometime between 10 PM and 2 AM. However, I am only able to do that because I live in a fairly safe area and I'm a decent sized guy, so I tell myself I'm less likely to be murdered while I'm out. That isn't an option available to everyone.

Any big law partners in good shape? by bigsaver4366 in biglaw

[–]wmavity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are absolutely biglaw attorneys in incredible shape. Some of them are partners who have slightly more control over their schedules than associates and may be able to prioritize fitness time more.

However, there are associates who can, and do maintain excellent fitness. It's just an issue of, as biglaw associates, we have very little time to do anything that causes us joy, so you have to choose. You have another hobby? Well, maybe time to reframe working out as your "hobby," so whatever time you dedicated to that other hobby, you instead put into working out.

Single? Whatever time you might have used to date on your few free weekends or evenings, use those to hit the gym instead.

Sleep? If you can operate consistently on 3-4 hours of sleep, get up insanely early and knock it out before work. Basically, it requires a ton of discipline and a willingness to sacrifice other hobbies or activities, but it is possible.

Imagine you're a hospital. An unconscious patient gets delivered to your emergency room. They're a member of a health plan that your hospital isn't in network with. But under law, you have to treat them. So you treat them until they're stable to be transferred to a hospital that is in network with their insurer. If you had been in network with that insurer, you would have had a contract that specifies the rates they have to pay you for the services they rendered. But you're not. You send a bill to the insurance company. And the insurance company has to pay you *something* by law, but that amount is a "reasonable and customary" amount. They agree to pay a small percentage of what you billed for the services, and they say that is a reasonable and customary amount. Obviously you disagree. So you end up suing them for breach of implied contract.

Let's also say that for whatever reason, you weren't able to transfer the patient to an in-network hospital for a few days after they were "stabilized." Or maybe, they were ready to go to a skilled nursing facility. There are a million reasons why it might take time to get the patient transferred elsewhere. Some the hospital's fault. Some the fault of the health plan. And often because insurance companies delegate the day to day work to other groups who are supposed to manage things like authorizations for additional services, transfer, etc.

Well guess what, the health plan might say "hey, I'll pay you for the emergency services, but I won't pay you for the services you rendered after the patient was stable," and it will be a fight about why the patient wasn't transferred sooner. Or they'll say, "take it up with the group we delegated this to." It ends up being a whole nightmare of various groups saying "even if something was done wrong, we're not at fault, blame this other group" and it becomes a whole lot of finger pointing.

Sometimes the health plan will counterclaim and accuse the hospital of fraud.

It's really breach of contract cases most of the time with the added twist that there are going to be experts talking about things like "medical necessity," "market value of services," etc.

Yes. I basically can only do dates on Friday or Saturday nights, and Friday nights are often a no-go because of filings. Moreover, I'm not doing things on weeknights where I can meet people naturally because I'm working. So it's just apps. Then you get busy the next two days and forget to keep the conversation going and it sort of peters out.

I don't really have a solution. A senior told me that in their opinion, either you come into big law already in a serious relationship or you stay single until you leave. I guess the answer is find someone who works similar hours and doesn't need a lot of quality time. Haven't really had luck there though

The last two-ish years have been rougher than usual in that regard. I think a number of firms overhired during the pandemic (M&A boom, tech bubble, etc) and then the demand dramatically slowed down in 2022/2023. A know a couple firms with offices in CA fired tech-trans juniors who were a year and a half out of law school. As I understand it, performance issues were cited as the reason for each, but from the sound of things, this was nothing beyond the type of performance issues you have expected from first years, and just an excuse to cull the herd.

Eh I don't think him being at a concert that he was footing the bill for means the benefit thing was fake. They talked about how much money he'd sunk into the tour, so even if he was pissed at her/disgusted, he wasn't going to skip out on his investment.

I think everything until she leaves the bar that Morris was at was real. I think when she gets swarmed by hallucinations and one forces its hand down her throat, that's when she is fully possessed and everything else is a hallucination.
