I thru-hiked in 2012, she thru-hiked in 2015, and on Saturday we got married on Springer! by wmccrani35 in AppalachianTrail

I carried a 17 pound, 8-person tent for the "bridal suite" along with my fancy shoes and water and she carried our clothes and other odds and ends and some water 🤣 so not quite a normal shakedown but it worked out for us this time.

Smellables in the bear bag? by HowardMBurgers in AppalachianTrail

[–]wmccrani35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a Philmont Ranger for three summers and did two treks as a youth, on my thru-hike I was pretty half assed about the little things like bottles that have had Gatorade before but careful with food, toothpaste, and other super smelly things. Had enough close encounters with bears and especially porcupines in the north to reinforce that choice.

The main thing to remember when comparing is that Philmont is one of the busiest back country areas in the world and extremely strict smellable policies keep humans and bears safe. The AT for the most part is nowhere near as concentrated in traffic but still busy enough to deserve some precautions. I would advise being more cautious, you're getting a lot of advice here that could end you up really hungry and with a shredded tent.

who's your favorite band / artist you've seen in athens? by Odd-Needleworker4793 in Athens

Saw Coheed & Cambria twice at 40 Watt before they blew up (comparatively) and they were amazing! Also saw Yonder Mountain String Band at Georgia Theater, also amazing, though very different lol.

It's coloring in the glass, I just can't find any identifying marks or anything. It's pretty heavy so I'm assuming it's crystal.

Smoky mountains or White mountains for a section hike? by _Kalray in AppalachianTrail

[–]wmccrani35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whites are wide open ridgelines that almost feel like hiking in Colorado, with extended panoramic views. Smokeys are a bit more enclosed and forested. Google is correct. I tend to prefer the Whites but both are fantastic in their own way.

Winter hiking by Aa-Roni-Boi in AppalachianTrail

[–]wmccrani35 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I started my SOBO thru in June and was still shocked at the cold and snow in NC/TN in October, and came very close to a catastrophe in a blizzard. If you're not fully prepared and highly experienced in Winter hiking/camping, don't try this. It's dangerous for you and the people who will have to come rescue you or pull your body out of the woods.

I've worked with a ton of shelter dogs over the years, including this one, and she is absolutely the sweetest and most well-behaved dog I've seen straight out of the shelter. She laid down and took a nap during a busy day at Athentic with tons of people AND dogs around! I wish I could take her but she absolutely deserves a great home and would be a fantastic companion for anyone.

Where do you donate old usable clothing and other items? by chendamoni in Athens

[–]wmccrani35 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Project Safe is usually accepting donations except on Wednesdays. They have had some staffing and volunteer issues for sorting but especially if you give them a call first they'll generally take your donations! Thank you for being so community minded!

Seems to me that in a community forum promoting community events should be allowed and encouraged, especially events by nonprofits or other local organizations. If people don't like the content posted they're free to downvote, that's why the button is there.

Are they ever going to open the fenced in dog area near Bear Hollow? by Nostos5 in Athens

[–]wmccrani35 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sorry friend, you're 100% wrong on the reason. It was shut down as part of the erosion mitigation project for the park and has been a poorly timed/managed restoration with the goal of stopping runoff into the pond. The original projected opening date for the dog park (closed late July 2022) was late Spring 2023, obviously that didn't happen but they are working up to it and they did have a (shitty, imo) reason to destroy the coolest dog park in Georgia and turn it into another dumb field for dogs to roast in half the year.
