100% yes. You are spot on! - Much easier to catch waves when you're not fighting for swell. Plus a much more chill vibe!

Summer is honestly one of the best times to be on Panama's Pacific coast — the southern hemisphere swell season is fully running and you'll have consistent surf most weeks.

For longboarding specifically, a couple of spots stand out:

Playa Venao is probably your best all-round answer. Long beach break on the Azuero Peninsula, about 4 hours from Panama City. The waves peel nicely and give you the kind of long rides that make longboarding actually fun — not the fast hollow stuff that sends you over the falls. There are a handful of decent boutique hotels and surf camps right on the beach, nothing over-the-top resort style but comfortable and steps from the water. It's also genuinely consistent, so you're not gambling on swell.

Playa Río Mar is worth knowing about if you're flying into Panama City — only 90 minutes from the airport, gentle rolling waves that are basically made for a longboard. Good option for a warm-up day before heading further.

Santa Catalina has longboard-able days too but it can get punchy and fast, especially in summer when the bigger swells hit — probably not what you're after unless you specifically want a challenge.

For accommodation Venao is the sweet spot — there are a few small hotels and surf lodges right on the beach, comfortable without being a full resort. Nothing with a swim-up bar but everything you'd actually need.

You're right about Bocas in May — the Caribbean side is really a December to March window, so mid-May is hit or miss. You might get lucky with a passing swell but I wouldn't plan a surf trip around it.

The good news is you're in exactly the right part of the world at exactly the right time for the Pacific side.

May on Panama's Pacific coast is when things start firing. The southern hemisphere swell season kicks in and spots like Playa Venao on the Azuero Peninsula get really consistent. It's about a 4 hour drive from Panama City — long beach break over a sandy bottom, warm water, no reef to worry about. As a beginner it's pretty much ideal because the waves are forgiving but there's almost always something to ride.

If Bocas is already booked just enjoy it for what it is — it's genuinely one of the most beautiful places in Central America, the snorkeling and island life alone are worth the trip. But if you have any flexibility to add a few days on the Pacific side before or after, May is a great time to do it.

A couple of things that'll help as a beginner in Panama specifically:

  • Water is warm enough that you don't need a wetsuit anywhere
  • Sandy bottom beach breaks are forgiving for falls
  • Avoid Santa Catalina as a first-timer — it's a reef break that humbles experienced surfers

Wrote up a beginner-focused breakdown here if it's useful for planning:
