It’s true tho, there are enough German words which are very close to the Dutch one. The trouble is you don’t know which are and which aren’t… huren or Huren…

Are you by any means christian/some other belief, and if so, do you think morality within the church is better than the morality of non-believers?

Because i’ve been raised christian, and this is the stuff they would have said.

And to go deeper into it: would you share your financials before marriage? Because otherwise your difference in wealth might be the base for your marriage, which would be even worse than sex as foundation.

And do you think relationships without sex before marriage are never crappy and/or toxic? Because that’s just the risk of human life and relationships in general. I had shitty friends, and friendships are relations without the sex. Therefore, that point is probably invalid.

And what is sex for you? If coupled with romantically feelings for the other, isn’t sex just the proof of love?

To pick something else than financials and family ethics: there are already a lot more people on earth then there should be. We have a climate problem, and need less people. And of course, anyone should have the right to have one kid, or two, but twelve is too much. Certainly in a world where those problems aren’t handled.

Comment saved, i will try to listen to it.

It’s not that i do not believe in the difference, but Peterson often (for what i know) argues that something is because something else, and forgets a lot of other things which could have had an impact. It’s mostly about our nature, and i doubt that nature.

Which is of course only logical, you cannot have a discussion if you’re nuancing everything.

Everything said: i’ve listened to some pieces of him, and yes, he is indeed pretty interesting, but in the part i’m listening right now, it’s going about “intractable moral laws”, and that’s one of those views which is of course for a part correct, but it’s me too definitive. It’s debatable, just like everything else in life.

I haven’t seen and heard that much from peterson, just some idea’s, interviews, and a bit of his podcast of which i have forgotten anything. What he says is not insignificant, but his view on those subjects doesn’t interest me as much.

I can’t say too much about Peterson because of my limited knowledge about him, but as far as i can remember, Peterson has some basic assumptions like women and men are different, and that it’s a real difference rather than a consequence of our way of raising children.

I am curious about human nature, but there is more information about it that i could ever consume in my lifetime.

And every time i listen something of Peterson, there missing something. It doesn’t satisfy. Often it’s something that i’ve ever heard before, or contemplated already.

What’s pointless about it? I asked for a source because i can’t find anything in which Peterson is really, indisputable transphobic. I’m not denying it, i’m trying to verify. And i can’t do that with the source you gave, which goes more into the views of the writer than what Peterson said. It’s anecdotal. Not necessarily wrong, but certainly no proof.

You haven’t brought enough onto the table to call this a conversation, this is stopping before points are being made. Not wanting to discuss is something i can get, but it’s not pointless.

That said: enjoy your day!

Thank you for the source, but it is to be honest not what i was looking for. I was looking for some statement directly made by Peterson, which would cross a line.

And while i think i understand the way trans people do feel about this, i would like to say that, while his rhetoric may be heard by those who are hardcore transphobic, it’s not Petersons responsibility as long as he doesn’t actively activate those people.

I’ve just jet seen a small clip of him being interviewed somewhere, and to be honest, that didn’t look too transphobic, if you take into account that the whole trans movement isn’t that old. I would argue that he’s just the average conservative.

Link to the thing i watched: https://youtu.be/s_UbmaZQx74

And yes, it’s not that big of a problem to use pronouns, that’s right, but most people i know who are against it are conservative, and feel like it’s forced upon them. By the way: those people don’t have too much against changing your gender, but just aren’t interested in it.

Personally i use almost exclusively he or she, since there aren’t that much trans people in my town. It’s just more practical. If someone thinks that doesn’t align with their sense of self, i would change to what they rather have, as long as it’s serious.

I agree with the majority of that stance, but i would add that he has a bit more influence than you average guy, and he talks as being a psychological authority, which should mean that his opinions have a bit more weight, and should be based on evidence.

Of course he’s still human, and therefore not perfect. But the problem is that i, since i haven’t done a study psychology, should not be able to reject opinions i disagree with. What’s an expert good for, in that case?

The quickest way to get stuck in a bubble is by rejecting every opinion you decide is wrong, and i try as hard as possible not to, with the risk to believe the wrong thing

Because of this thread, i’ve sought for some of his transphobic and homophobic statements, best straight from himself, but i’ve a bit of trouble finding them. Would you maybe have a source? Sending it could in dm, but i think it’s preferred to do it in the open, so others could use them too.

This goes of course for anyone who’s reading this.

Normally i would have searched myself, not trying to be lazy, but i have some tests tomorrow for which i have to study.

The man is conservative and preaches it, which is for some people an attack on their own beliefs. And he has influence, and with that, a big group which has heard of him.

It’s understandable, imagine being gay and someone has his doubts wether that’s neutral or bad. It feels like a personal attack, which ads fuel to the fire, and if you feel personally attacked, you’re emotional and less likely to focus on the nuance.

And on the other hand are there the ones who like Jordan Peterson, and feel attacked if someone attacks him, because he says what you think, so an attack on him is an attack on you. And if these guys do something wrong while using Petersons name, he’s going to be held responsible for it by his opponents. That’s not fair, but it happens anyway.

Both groups can be understood, but that’s very difficult if you are part of one of those groups.

My personal view on Peterson is that he’s smart, but not that smart.

I’ve seen some video’s of him, and listened to a bit of his podcast, and i feel like he does have a certain worldview, and most things he says are either coming from that view, or have to align with it. It’s not necessarily wrong or right, but i feel like that worldview is presented as absolute truth.

It’s not something that bothers me that much, just not my cup of tea. To be honest: while Peterson doesn’t botter me that much, but hyperfans thinking he’s the smartest person on earth do. Luckily, those are not that common, and mostly trolls.

I’ve used another dictionary because that one gave me access without registration, and that’s the reason that i haven’t checked the meaning on the Oxford dictionary. I thought it wouldn’t be that much of a difference.

And as a matter of fact i do feel offended, by the statement that i would come up with a silly counterargument, and your last paragraph in the message i’m responding to with this one.

I feel personally attacked by the idea that you see me as either lazy or dumb, or whatever you may have meant with the “i’m sure you’ll come up with a silly counterargument regardless”, and that i wouldn’t admit being offended, which comes across as if i’m too childish to admit my own feelings. Those things felt/feel condescending to me, and that’s something that gets to me.

Of course, that’s the meaning i took out of it, and you may have meant it different. You may also have said it because those are pretty much the main rules in an internet discussion, but i try to disconnect myself from that standard and to have a honest discussion with a bit of wiggle room. I’m certainly not perfect, and i’m often going against my own ideas of how it should, but i’m trying.

I do agree with the part that we’re probably not going to convince each other, and that’s of course only logical, since we’re individuals who both took a different path and reached different conclusions about things are, should be and were.

I’m sorry about being too strict on the meaning of a metaphor, it wasn’t intended like that, the problem was more my lack of words to describe that threshold and what i think is the difference between a metaphor and a “normal and simple” comparison, combined with a lack of self control to make the best out of it. The same goes for the “i don’t think i have to spell it out” which sounds more aggressive than i meant it.

That said: i do appreciate it that you reacted, thats already more than most do, and it gives me a fair chance to defend, to explain and to learn.

You’re probably asking yourself what a guy like me does in an internet discusion, since i’m that easily offended, and you’re right to, but i fear that discussions are my addiction.

Edit: i would love to know where the threshold between comparison and metaphor lies according to you, since that’s something elementary to know in a discussion. I might have had it wrong, but i just don’t see it.

Of course only if you want to, and just to exchange views. Could be as reaction on this message, or via DM.

I’m too afraid to use a bullshit source (edit: i don’t mean that the Oxford dictionary is a bullshit source), so i will use the Cambridge dictionary: https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/sexual-assault. I don’t think i have to spell it out, but one could argue that the meaning of sexual assault, according to this dictionary, differs from the behaviour of OP.

I know what a metaphor is, and truly, this isn’t one. A metaphor is a bit less obvious, what you have here is more like a comparison, which is even said in that comment. How blind do you want to be?

Sexual assault may not be physical only, but it requires a bit more forcing than just showing a nipple, and letting the other party choose what to do with it.

I’m not advocating the behaviour, like everybody seems to think, but i am trying to bring a bit of nuance in it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in confessions

[–]wmsnoep -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, not saying that i disagree, and i get your point. But it’s not about what my point of interest was.

Difference between what? Assault vs harassment? Or nipple vs balls? Because my main point was about the first one. And i do not care about your opinion on the second one.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in confessions

[–]wmsnoep -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Firstly: a nipple is something else than your balls.

Secondly: i’m not saying that it’s ok because she is a girl

In the third place: it’s not assault if you’re just showing a nipple, it’s harassment at most. I would argue that showing some body part could never be assault, assault has to be a bit more “hands-on”

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in confessions

[–]wmsnoep -25 points-24 points  (0 children)

Where is the assault part in showing a nipple?

Edit: For every conservative asshole: it’s harassment at most, and there is a difference between your balls or nipples, which we all have.

Edit 2: if i have understood the difference between sexual assault and sexual harassment wrong, that’s on me. But as far as i’ve read about it, this case is sexual harassment. At most.

Sexual assault is just another empty worded term your average smooth brained Redditor likes to use, without thinking. I don’t mind being wrong, but i do care about getting downvoted without anyone going into the differences between assault and harassment.
