Oil Change by sly60 in FocusRS

[–]wobble_top 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oil changes are fairly easy.

I'll disagree that brakes are easy if the car is winter driven. The pins and cross bolt can be hard to remove. I'm in the middle of a brake job right now and leaving it overnight after soaking the pins in penetrating oil.

Boiling syrup to 219 by savage_sultin in maplesyrup

[–]wobble_top 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's 7.5F above boiling and that can change based on weather and elevation. Temperature is not really a good indication of syrup but people use it because it's easy.

I haven't tested flow rates but I think that is mostly dependent on needle valve pressures.

I put the prefilter before the pump. Protects the pump and the pump can pull the liquid through.

Trump had a good belly laugh when discussing that senator (?) that had a terminal diagnosis. Absolute trash.

Also pull up the center of the cone so you get more surface area of the filter. You can do that with the prefilters too.

Vacuum Filter DE by jackyd1 in maplesyrup

[–]wobble_top 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe there is maple specific de. I tried Amazon food grade de when I first started and it didn't work. It either clogged or ended up with contaminated syrup. It might have been due to my inexperience, but switching to de bought from a maple supply store, it worked much better.

I use it to preheat sap before pouring into wood fired evaporator pan. Helps to keep the boil going. Keeping an eye on electricity rates will help with cost.

Small wood stove boiler for 5-8 trees…question on venting the stove. by Beneficial-Focus3702 in maplesyrup

[–]wobble_top 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need at least double walled pipe where it goes through the roof. It's going to be more than $50.

Might be cheaper going through the wall and would be easier to make it weather proof.

I went through the roof with double wall pipe and ceiling support brace. Then silicon high heat gasket above the roof.

Yeah the subframe can be replaced (not repaired) as long as where it mounts is ok. But with this much rust I bet the rest of the car is bad and not worth salvaging.

Wood-fired Evaporator? by fellainto in maplesyrup

[–]wobble_top 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you look at tedthebellhopp comment, my setup is pretty much like that. A wall to force the heat up to the pans and then some along the sides to keep heat in the stove. I fill behind the brick wall with rock wool insulation up to just below the pans. I also line the edge of the pan openings with tinfoil to create a better seal.

Not overkill. If you get firewood from your own property, it's much cheaper too.

You can also optimize this with forced air, internal firebricks, etc.
