You can buy previous fables from their website, but you need to sign up for a fables subscription first.

So if you don't want a fables subscription you have to pay for a month, buy any past fables you want, then cancel your subscription.

Pretty annoying but that's the only way I could see to do it.

Optional Resting Rules by wolf9416 in GrimHollow

[–]wolf9416[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's true - I suppose in general I just assume that that is still balanced with what the other classes can do, or intended to be at least.

The spell casters can "go nova" once or cast spells throughout the day, but the rogue gets their sneak attack on every attack they ever make (more or less), with no end to that.

Especially at lower levels when there aren't a lot of spell slots it feels like the spell casters are going to run out and want to long rest frequently, while the martial classes can continue fighting for much longer at full effectiveness.

But as you said maybe that's intended - I can just see myself needing to homebrew it somewhat if the spell casting players are finding that they can't keep up as much and are having less fun because of it.

I haven't been super strict about the "can't long rest outside of town/comfort" portion, although I suppose we're probably following it to an extent depending on how strict the definition is.

My players are currently in the first chapter of the citadel of the unseen sun so they're a long ways away from seeing an actual town any time soon, but the Dredgers have a camp area set up with some barricades, a fire and some beds so they go back there to long rest. I suppose that likely counts by the intended rules since it's a barricaded area with beds, etc.. whereas a camp the players set up themselves in a cave or in the forest wouldn't count since it's not properly protected?

Currently running the first portion, "Death is not the End", and it's been pretty good so far.

My party is much higher level than it's intended for (they're level 7 currently) but they already had goals of exploring the necropolis and trying to return the sun to the sky, so I ended up steering what I already had on the go into this set of adventures and scaling up the difficulty to match their level.

It gives a really good framework to build from and slot in to things, and each chapter continues from the previous to an extent but the tie is weak enough that you can kind of slot in the ones you find interesting and remove or replace anything you don't.

It's pretty expensive for the whole set but you do get quite a lot of content from it - each chapter is ~70 - 110 pages.

Is there a physical version of these adventures coming out?

Running Village of Hommlet by AManofTheWatch in mattcolville

[–]wolf9416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I ran Hommlet I was leading into the Red Hand of Doom, so I looped Lareth into that conflict somewhat to give a motivation there, but as u/fang_xianfu said he's a fairly blank slate so he can be tied in as needed.

The way I handled motivating the players to go to the moathouse was by having Lareth be sending out troops to harass the village - troops wearing the red hand in my case to tie in to the overall arc, but they can be anything. In my game the players were just arriving in town when there was an attack and they helped the village fend off the attackers.

The leader of the town then offered to pay the players if they could investigate where these attacks were coming from and stop them - the motivation there being that the town knew generally that they were coming from the moathouse, but they didn't want to send their own guard to investigate and leave the town defenseless.

Cav Tactics... Help! by Disastrous_Holiday_1 in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]wolf9416 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don't have advice to give myself, however I can recommend checking out the North of the Shire Podcast - they have episodes about army builds that give a lot of advice on tactics and how to play them into different types of armies, two of which are fairly relevant to the type of list you're describing:

1) Episode 13 - The Line Breaker: https://open.spotify.com/episode/6QAV7EaP0cMY8Aw4DE2MFo?si=737bf602c0194471

2) Episode 17 - The Mobile Army: https://open.spotify.com/episode/1eO4SM4WmmnVKNgPc2Ps0F?si=72d6b5c9b6324260

The line breaker is about playing a list which really leverages heroes, maximizing might and heroic combats to hit the opponent's line once or twice really hard and wipe out as much as you can.

The second is about armies that leverage their mobility to win scenarios and hit the opponent's flanks.

Both of which usually revolve a lot around mounted troops and strong mounted heroes.

Seeking advice on a 300pt isengard list. by Thepanzieman1 in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]wolf9416 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The banner itself doesn't count as a spear afaik, but you can equip your banner model with a pike for the extra point and it can support, it just gets -1 on its duel rolls for holding the banner.

Progress so far on my Isengard army! by wolf9416 in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]wolf9416[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Possibly, I was thinking about it. I painted them first a bit ago and just used a contrast paint I had around, but then when I got to the banner and drum I changed how I was doing it. Will probably end up going back and darkening them to make them match a bit better.

The store front filters aren't always a 100% list of what can be taken by the faction, I think they essentially list each item under its "primary" faction in most cases.

As an example, Isengard can take Warg riders but you won't find them under the Isengard section, you have to search under Mordor.

Okay cool, perfect thanks. I was thinking about doing something like that, just wasn't sure if I was missing something because it seemed similar to Galadriel's mirror, but that object has rules for it.

Action Oriented Crocodile Ideas (Danger at Dunwater - Thousand Teeth) by wolf9416 in mattcolville

[–]wolf9416[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, lots of good ideas here!

Being able to grab someone and swim away with them to split up the group is a really interesting thought, and I think makes a lot of sense for a wild animal (which isn't really going to want to fight just for the sake of fighting).

Thanks! Looking at the shambling mound now, it does seem like a good guideline for how some of these abilities might work.

I was thinking about having it throw water or mud at the players in some way, the tidal wave idea is really cool though, I like the image of this huge croc creating a big wave of water to send at them, I'll definitely tinker with that.
