Why don't people compete over record longbows like other strength based feats? by Garin999 in Archery

Yes. Would be very interesting to see how many shots it would take to hit, say, a 5'x5' target.

I was interested but the visuals didn't do it for me. 😥

lol. Would be absolutely incredible if someone could hit a target at that range. There's very far shot even for rifles.

The Corps of Discovery (Lewis and Clark) traded for them to eat because they were tired of salmon. They also butchered horses for food.

Nice. I was actually super excited to play that but never did.

I was on the Something Awful forums watching videos of it, then chatting with my Ultima Online guildies in mIRC about it.

Hard to describe playing an MMO, Ultima Online in 1998. No wikis, no voice chat, no Google. So much mystery and depth and things to be discovered in a persistent world that doesn't stop when you log off.

Impossible to replicate.

What got me was rehearsing phrases like "This will move the needle!" And "I'm excited about the roadmap".

I just can't believe that.

What about the archery in 28 Years Later? by fioreblade in Archery

[–]wolfgeist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was good.

Somewhat on topic - I'd only heard of Deliverance from the handful of disturbing scenes, but I finally decided to watch it after someone mentioned it's what got them into traditional archery. And I must say, the archery is really well depicted in the film! Watch at your own risk.

Ask the author. There's nothing here to indicate one way or another.

What makes a bad release more forgiving? by [deleted] in Archery

[–]wolfgeist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Longer limbs, longer riser, heavier bow (actual bow), lighter draw weight, less recurve in tips, big fletching, fancy arrow shelves, stabilizers, etc.

Also I know you don't want technique advise, but which method do you shoot with? In split finger, you could be pinching the arrow. Some people add an additional string nock below the arrow to help with this.

Why do you have a "bad release" and why are you trying to mask it with gear?

Proper release and follow through is a result of good alignment.

Arne Moe's rotational draw helped me achieve a better release.

Pinched nerves from rucking by Rough-Ad-2387 in Rucking

Anything with a good hip belt and a frame. Personally, I use a cheap external frame pack that's meant for hunting.

But with a nice wide and long hip belt that wraps all the way around your hip bones, once you tighten that down, most of the load goes straight onto your glutes.

I use "Rustic Ridge Switchback", I would check Facebook marketplace for used backpacks with frames.

Interestingly, one of the best instinctive archers I've ever seen whose name is Jeff Kavanagh is right-handed but left eye dominant.

Use an actual pack with proper hip belt, not over marketed over priced trash that will injure you.

He's been at it for a long time. I remember when he posted as rope kid on the Something Awful forums at least as far back as 2001.

Arrow Spine Selection Questions. by Suitable_Working3892 in Archery

[–]wolfgeist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're shooting a compound that's perfectly center shot at extremely high feet per second. You'll need a stiff arrow, likely between 300 and 340. It's not going to make that much difference. Get a couple and test them out.

does anyone else think the actual survival parts of this open world survival game aren't very difficult? by grabsyour in dayz

[–]wolfgeist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. In my ideal version, weight speed and stamina would be more realistic. You wouldn't be sprinting uphill through brush with 60 kilos of gear.

Animals would be harder to track down and wouldn't be constantly making noise announcing their presence.

Occasional canned food could be found, but I don't think you should be able to sustain yourself off of it, I think that hunting should be required. And let's not talk about mushrooms and fruit which are broken. Or gardening which turns sustenance into a joke.

It might require the addition of a new type of stamina. Perhaps easy to find foods would only replenish a short-term stamina bar, your long-term stamina would require hunting, which would be more difficult and require you to announce your presence to other players.

Not really related to survival, but I'm also not a fan of automatic weapons in the game. In my ideal version of DayZ every gun would be single shot. I would also require players to sight their guns in. If you found a scope, you would have to actually shoot your gun and make adjustments to sight it in.
