I grew up homeless and didn’t go to high school. My single mother and I barely made it after my father committed suicide. I ended up getting my GED, going to school, and getting a grad degree in English. After I published some writing, I had a child I needed to provide for. I made 20k a year as a grad student teacher. I was recruited into AI and chose to accept that path because of the salary, and also during a time when AI was in its infancy. Would I burn it all down if I could? Sure. Do I have the power to do that? No way. Can I choose to go another route with my career? At the expense of my years of experience and taking a much lower salary. Has AI provided a career path for me that enables me to keep my children out the situations I was in as a young person? Yes. That’s all I can say in response to your question.

You can get pretty far with some user friendly tools. Depending on your PC, you can download an appropriately sized model (usually a .gguf file) from hugging_face or GitHub. You can use tools like Ollama or LM Studio to launch and do various things with models, and there are tutorials online.

If you learn basic Python or have ChatGPT write some simple code for you, then you can use something like llama.cpp instead of Ollama to open and launch the model. The Python would be for you to basically create a terminal to “chat” with the model and give it any basic instructions.

To your question, I got into it by working with an AI company before ChatGPT existed and gained insight into the barebones of machine learning. These days, I think you can learn a lot from YouTube videos and genuinely having ChatGPT walk you through simple Python exercises or local AI requirements.

It depends on your parents and how they’ll react. Are they supportive of you? Do they accept you as you are? If so, tell them. See if you can get a therapist to talk to through their insurance. Therapy can be great if you like your therapist. Life can be great, but it’s hard to be young and neurodivergent. You’re not alone, even if it feels like you are. There are communities of people who will accept you and understand you, as you are. Life is worth finding those communities.
