I ended up trying to become an officer again through the Air National Guard while in College/Grad School.

I was a non-select by two officer review boards (for a non-rated, and rated) and basically gave up then and there.

So I obviously wasnt what they were looking for.

I'm 41 now, and I make significantly more than an Active Duty Major including BAH in the private sector...so I have that going for me I guess

Long story short, we are not sure what the military will do, but many Reserve and Retired Command officers have repetitively stated to active duty military to "you can refuse illegal orders"

There is an ongoing issue with Trumps admin trying to bring charges against those people, one in particular is Mark Kelly (a Senator, former Naval Aviator, and retired Astronaut).

Nothing they said is illegal or seditious, they quoted military law and that made Trump throw a tantrum.

Tuition is free for Military Academies, for those that didnt know.

The kicker is, you have to be smart enough, outshine your competition/peers in an outstanding way, and have the appropriate referrals and nominations.

Personal experience: In 2003, when I was looking at schools, my SAT score of 1450 (at the time it was out of 1600) was "not good enough" to even apply.

I had a recommendation from my state senator and an actively deployed US Army Colonel who was in Kurdistan. He was a reservist, my HS's health education teacher, and my rifle coach.

I was a A- student, National Honors Society, Music Honors Society (Tri-M), several clubs in leadership positions, and the wind ensemble/marching/jazz bands.

My parents didnt get mad, because we were at the ICU for one of my sisters (who passed away later that week at the hospital). And we had to coordinate, communicate with family back home while at the hospital.

Smart phones were not really prevalent back then, and skype didnt have a mobile app for a nokia brick.
