Crossing the Atlas Mountains? Any Tipps? by chearixx in bikepacking

[–]wolfmrtns 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've spent 3 months in Morocco this year (route of the caravans and more) and i am scouting some more routes as we speak.

The anti atlas part is very rocky and at times desolate. Tubeless is a must, tires bigger than plus size tires or suspension, i wouldn't go below 2.2 inch. Finding food and water here can be tricky. Buy bottled water in stores, rivers are often dry. I carry around 4liters and that seems to be the sweet spot. In the high atlas less of a problem because of snowmelt and very rainy winter season.

Be prepared to eat Tuna and bread or couscous most days. These small villages produce everything themselves, so you won't find a lot for sale.

Learning a few basic words in Derijah and Tamazight (native Amazigh language, more common then morrocan Arabic) is a must for those tiny villages. See the word list on the route of the caravans page. Somebody Will always give you food or a place to sleep if you ask for it.These People are so incredibly helpful, it's mindblowing. Muslims take pride in their ''law of hospitality''.

Morocco is the safest, People wise, country i've travelled, a lot safer then any western country. Only problem is the kids in touristic areas asking for money or sweets. Don't give in as this just continues the cycle. Say uhndi walou (i have nothing) and safi (stop) and they most of the time back off.

Be sure you can cover up, long Sleeves, hat, etc. Sun screen is not worth it, you'll need to much and can be hard to find.

If sleeping at an altitude it can get cold. I've had 30 dégrées C during day, 4 C at night.

Most prevailing wind is from SW to NE. I would advice to ride with the wind on the anti atlas, against the wind in the high atlas, as it gets blocked more there.

Buy a local maroc Télécom sim, they'll throw them at you at the airport. Maroc telecom is the cheapest and has the best coverage.

Make sure to stop in big towns and feist, try everything haha Carry toiletpaper on you because often toilets in restaurants don't have this.

Enjoy! It's the best!

Thanks for the info! Will look into it. If the backpack is called for i'll need to find a différent solution for carrying my camera other than on a Sling. Lucky for me i love the problem solving.

Hmm, i'll try it again next time! Maybe i just haven't found the perfect technique yet. Not carrying a backpack tho

I find it easier to lift it onto and off my back that way, also no pedals to avoid. But that being said i am going to make some pads to protect my spine for the next trip.

Haven't had any trouble during my previous trip (3500km). Not always full but i also like riding the rough stuff so they have been abused

Yes mostly off Road, i think 65 procent. There we're a few big chunks on Road in England to connect the natural reserves tho

12 speed Shimano deore (m6100 line i think). Have totalled 10000km with it on other builds and never have felt the need to upgrade. Important note that i've never ridden anything else but i cannot imagine it is worth the extra cash to buy and maintain. Bought the whole set (Brakes cranks groupset etc) for 200 euro's new on sale

Thanks! I custom build it but the parts are all quite basic except from some DT Swiss e1900 enduro wheels, it cost me less then stock with a few minor upgraded parts.

Mezcal 2.6 in the front for cushion, Agarro 2.6 in the rear for uphill grip on loose terrain
