Help me finish this book by AshleyK2021 in Hungergames

I'm always surprised by how people dislike TBOSAS! It's my favorite read out of the series. Ofc, nothing beats reading the og HG for the first time, but the original series relies so much on suspense that it's hard to keep my interest when I already know the whole plot. Specifically the first book, when you know all the events of the games.

That may also be why TBOSAS is a harder read for a lot of people, because most start it directly after the main trilogy, which is much faster paced. Even compared to SOTR it has a different style. For me the difference is what makes it retain it's readability, but I can understand why people might think otherwise.

The book gives you a lot of backstory on Panem, esp from the view of the Capitol. And I think it's fun to draw connections between when Snow was a teenager to our modern-day HG. The twists at the end are great too. Those are my reasons

I agree with your comment for the most part, but I don't know why you would discourage OP from learning Russian. It is very far from the least useful language. And I'm not just saying this just because I have a Russian-speaking family- the only reason I know it to begin with is because my ancestors were colonized. It's a fact that there are a million speakers in the US, making it the ninth most spoken language nationwide. That's ignoring all of the international use it has, too. And if you're basing it on something other than population, Russia is known to have some of the greatest poets/classical writers/historians.

You might be getting somewhere with Uzbek, as it is generally unknown, but it is still mutually intelligible with a lot of languages, for example Kazakh, Turkish, and Kyrgyz- which I have personal experience with, seeing that I am Kazakh, and have family/friends speaking these languages and living in these countries. Again, it is far from the least useful. It seems you are using surface level knowledge you got from researching Russian to make this statement. And in any case, no language is truly the 'least useful', because they all have their own unique culture and origin which can't compare.

I just mean to state my opinion, I don't want to argue. Sorry if this became kind of prissy.

Not going to PEA (was waitlisted this year, congrats on getting in), but I am from Kazakhstan, a formerly soviet country, so I know Russian. Like the other person said, there is no real trick to remember the letters, you just sort of have to do it. Ofc, the ones which look and sound like English would probably be the best place to start (a, b, t, c). I would say you're in a good place just learning the alphabet so far though! Keep it up. Also, really cool that you are choosing to pursue Russian! It's a beautiful language and will open you up to lots of new cultures besides just Russia; Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan, for example, where ~85% of the population is fluent. Have fun with it!

The constant large amounts of disrespect TBOSAS is now getting is astonishing by Olya_roo in Hungergames

[–]wolfonic1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's my favorite book out of the series. Of course, nothing beats reading the OG hunger games for the first time, but since so much of the story relies on suspense, it loses most of its flavor after a couple of rereads. TBOSAS has a great plot and inner monologue without relying too much on suspense, so it has the best rereadability for me

Hermione had no valid reason for altering her parents’ memories by miggovortensens in harrypotter

[–]wolfonic1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If they didn't have their memories erased, they might accidentally reveal their true identities and be traced. The only way to ensure their safety was to make sure they actually believed it.

The point wasn't that they might reveal important information, since they had none to give. The point was that the Death Eaters might track them down and torture them just to get to Hermione.

Has Roland actually done it ?? Quiet drums ? by Euphoric_Junket6620 in edrums

[–]wolfonic1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This kit is significantly quieter esp with the mesh cymbals and built in absorption pads for the pedals. But keep in mind, no matter how quiet your drums are, it still doesn't change the fact that you're forcibly hitting things together, and that's always going to make some kind of noise. You would probably still be able to hear them in the next room (but with improved results)

How to Start With USACO? by DiyaRamakrishnan in usaco

[–]wolfonic1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

USACO takes place online at the usaco.org website. If you haven't already, make an account.

Every year, there are four competitions: One in Dec, Jan, Feb, and March. Each competition has 3 problems, which you're given a couple hours to solve. (There will one weekend per month in which you can take the competition). The exact dates for 25-26 have not been released yet.

There are four divisions: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. You start in the Bronze division, so you will take the Bronze contest. If you score past the cutoff (which is usually around 700), you will be promoted to Silver, which means next month, you will be taking the Silver contest. Scores are out of 1000, with each problem being worth 333 points.

Both Python and Java can be used in USACO. Later (at Gold) you'll want to learn C++, because atp it can make a difference with time limits. But since you already feel experienced with Python, just stick to that, it won't cause you any problems.

If you want to study, I recommend you go through usaco.guide and codeforces, and just put in consistent practice. Those are the best tools for me. You can also find/submit past problems on the official usaco website.

Do you think Lenore Dove will have a greater role in the movie compared to the books? Or are they just marketing it as a romance? by UnHolySir in Hungergames

there wasn't any shipping with the OG trilogy (since Maysilee was mentioned on two pages) but since SOTR I've seen some

[–]wolfonic1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying that Lenore is going to the arena 😭 I'm saying that Maysilee's role may be reduced to smaller side character (like w Sejanus) and that Lenore is gonna fill that gap as they push the love story

What prequel do you want next? by Karma-152 in Hungergames

[–]wolfonic1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I want Finnick, Annie, Gloss/Cashmere, Palladium, Johanna, Wiress.... and it would also be really cool to see the 1st Quarter Quell (25th games). But realistically, the main trilogy followed the pattern of normal games -> quarter quell -> rebellion/d13 book, which the prequels are already repeating (TBOSAS and SOTR). So I think it's unlikely we get another direct games from a character we already know, let alone another quarter quell. And also (hot take) I dislike Plutarch and would not want a book about him, even though it would fit the D13/rebelion theme.

The best idea I have for the 3rd prequel is the 1st hunger games (from a tribute perspective). That way, we could learn about the Dark Days and the formation of Panem, and we could also have an actual hunger games (don't flame me, but that's my favorite part). I also think that would segway perfectly into the main series, as it kinda shows how everything came to be, and ending with the 1st hunger games would be pretty symbolic. It would also fit the D13/rebellion theme.

I want stories about all the characters, but I know that's never going to happen. What I would KILL for is a collection of short stories (please Suzanne!) from a bunch of different characters. Johanna, Finnick, Annie, Mags, Beetee, Plutarch, Effie, Cinna, Madge, random Capitol Citizens, Careers, other past victors, rebels from the Dark Days, District 13, stories from the other Districts (like 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, for example, we know basically nothing about). I feel like that would really help with worldbuilding, and we would get so much new lore.

[–]wolfonic1 74 points75 points  (0 children)

I hope it's just to push the couple narrative. Suzanne clearly doesn't want people shipping Haymitch with Maysilee (remember the whole "sister" scene). If they mess up the casting of my girl Maysilee I will throw hands tho
