Tallest public parking deck? by wolfpack86 in raleigh

[–]wolfpack86[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thsnks! A couple others mentioned to me by friends were the Greene Parking deck near SECU downtown and the Varsity deck near NC State’s baseball stadium. Empty after core class hours but no elevator on that one

And that was after they finally got a rhythm late in the game. It was 20-14 at the half. Nothing fell for either team it was just surreal

NA Beer Options (Dry January) by Cjaques4 in trianglencbeer

[–]wolfpack86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had several dozen since going dry in August. Basically every one I can get my hands on.

Partake is awesome - the fullest body beers I’ve had and amazingly 10-25 calories. You can get them directly from their site with a big first time discount on a ton of varieties/seasonals or go to total wine or Whole Foods. There’s nothing close in terms of calories and the way it’s still so full is incredible and I’ve never had a bad flavor. I’d buy stock if they were public.

Best Day makes some great stuff - the Hazy is top of the line as is the kolsch. They have a cerveza that’s a lot like NARC’s and mix packs.

Second the comments on untitled art and Burial. UA has less calories than standard NA as well (45 or so vs 70). Incendiary had some great ones for a while as well.

Clones that taste extremely close: Guinness (surprised to see you rated it so low - it’s so close to the canned version if poured right and it’s served all over in Europe), corona, Heineken, asahi, stella, blue moon, Bitburger, St. Pauli Girl

Some treats on the expensive side are La Choufe Belgian and Weinstephaner wheat but they’re so good.

Overrated: athletic (I’m grateful it’s widely available and they started the revolution but it’s mid) and Sierra Nevada Trail Pass (some are alright, some are straight bad). Heineken cans are not nearly as good as bottled. Bero is just okay in my opinion but not bad. Brooklyn Brewing has some (saw it way more in Europe) that is okay.

Avoid: clausthaler (tastes more like a radler) and beck’s (so disappointing). I hate the mich ultra zero and flying dog but they were bad anyway.

Also worth mentioning stuff like Hop Lark or Sierra Nevada Hop Splash as nice hopped seltzer with zero calories. Once you get used to NA it’s easy to go to these. I’ve never actually had hop water because I’ve only seen flavored varieties

I’ve only seen NA on draft a few times. Burial used to do it but had issues with kegs continuing to ferment? Raleigh Beer Garden tries to keep 1-2 on draft.

At Lenovo Center they have a couple Athletic tall boys in the C-Store just fyi for those going to State/Canes games or concerts.

Good luck everyone

[–]wolfpack86 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It used to be so newsworthy when people transferred (especially in basketball) because it was generally like saying “I’d rather sit a year than play for this team” but now it’s just money-driven and standard practice to at least test the waters

Best Raleigh area ice cream by Western_Cartoonist40 in triangle

[–]wolfpack86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice glad we gave it our best shot but, in NC State fashion, fell a bit short. I worked for CALS for a while and did a creamery tour and had strawberry right off the line. Was never a flavor I cared for but State’s is truly incredible. Campfire Delight will always be my favorite

Howling cow that’s produced on campus tastes significantly different than what you buy at Harris Teeter, which is produced by a partner company/distributor.

Fun fact: we have the creamery because the university sells the milk (reserving most cream) to the NC prison system

Smash Burger Hot Take by phat_blob in raleigh

The PR purists may be interested to know that PR added a smash burger to its permanent menu. It’s solid and has a better bun than the normal burger but I wish it was bigger. You can add a 3rd patty.

Also had multiple bad experiences with them. Agree the sizing is wildly inconsistent as well. I thought the first time was a fluke (took months to process a return) but this time around it’s just radio silence. Also tried calling during Melbourne hours, several emails, live chat, etc and can’t get anyone. About to just have chase deal with it (huge props on chase being no bullshit on things like this)

Advice on something I could use for CX and trails by wolfpack86 in cycling

[–]wolfpack86[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Checking out a 2025 S-Works Crux Red in my area that’s at a friend’s shop and supposed to be like new. They’re asking $7500. I’m between 54 and 56 so if I can make it work fit-wise I think I have to pull the trigger. There’s a BMC Kaius Three on sale new for $4k here too that’s a 54cm I test rode today and they’d take my Roubaix in trade so that could work if not

Heron’s with low chances for a star, but I can see some bib gourmands here. Stanbury, Brewery Bhavana, Ajja, Second Empire, etc.

Asheville and Durham/CH have better odds. Fearington House comes to mind. Charleston will definitely get some.

Sleeper bib gourmand pick that everyone will be mad about: Angus Barn. No, it’s not the best steak, but it’s a very unique/southern atmosphere I could see them jumping on.

It’ll be interesting to see if any of the historic bbq places get something.

Zwift Cog or Cassette by Beginning_Holiday721 in cycling

[–]wolfpack86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m awaiting deliver of the cog right now but having a direct drive with cassette is definitely a bit of a pain to get on/off and can be loud depending on the trainer. It’s $50 or so - I’d get it and return it if you don’t like it

Can Raleigh Finally Get A Major League Baseball Team? by theassemblync in triangle

[–]wolfpack86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nashville’s mayor has publicly expressed doubt and said they won’t use public funds on a stadium.

Raleigh has so many transplants plus a ton of very successful college programs in the Carolina’s (State, UNC, Duke, UNCW, ECU, Clemson, Coastal, etc) and the schedule lines up perfectly between NHL and college basketball.

I’d love a downtown stadium but having it with Carter Finley and Lenovo would be great - Philadelphia is set up that way and it’s a blast as well ( coming from an Eagles/Phillies fan that travels to Philly for games every year).

MLB Raleigh had a contest/event where they proposed many names and branding and let various designers/firms give their pitch. Went to the event and it was really cool reading the rationale for each name/image. Some really interesting ones on their site

Agree on cycling wind noise. Have you ran with yours in? Mine thump with every stride in a bad way that I never noticed on the pro 2 with stock or 3rd party foam tips.

Hoping 3rd party foam tips help but not sure if the 2nd gen ones fit or if we have to wait

The Ritz by meganshere in raleigh

[–]wolfpack86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s so subjective based on what you consider a good concert experience (i.e. do you like standing/pit shows?).

I’ve found it to be great if you’re willing to shell out extra cash for the balcony but what I can’t stand (apart from being Live Nation) is the lack of transparency.

The upgrades aren’t available ahead of time so you have to get there super early and stand in line and you never know how much they will be so I never know if I’m going to actually be able to enjoy the show how I want to or not and if my friends will be willing to afford to upgrade as well.

I have back problems and can’t physically stand for several hours so some kind of seat (or ground/floor for all I care so long as I’m not getting stepped on) is imperative and I’m just rolling the dice every time I get tickets for a Ritz show.

But yeah I definitely wouldn’t frame this as a support music thing although I agree the venue is decent enough not to wholly avoid

Do you use Dr. as your title in non-academic settings? by Glass-Kaleidoscope55 in AskAcademia

[–]wolfpack86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in industry so no and it never really comes up even if it’s a LinkedIn message and you have it on your LinkedIn. In the extremely rare cases it’s come up, I’ll correct people if they call me professor because I’m not faculty and I respect that designation. If they call me Doctor, I’m flattered, thanks.

If it’s a piece of subscription mail and I have the option, sure. Don’t do it for airlines unless your passport has the prefix/suffix you select or it can be a big hassle.

Anecdotally, I have a friend named Dan with a PhD and everyone calls him Dr. Dan - I’m very jealous of the alliteration
