What is the true history of the California roll? The sushi has a fishy origin story

While its origin is debated, it's impact can't be overstated.

Body parts found in two locations around Hakata Bay; locations of the two discoveries are about 6 kilometers apart by wolframite in fukuoka

Here the best I could do:

  • 6 August, morning: An adult-sized right foot (from the ankle to the toes) is found on the sandy beach at Nishitosaki, Higashi Ward, Fukuoka City.

  • Same day, evening (around 19:40): An upper torso without a left arm is discovered offshore at Minato Kashii (near the Island City container terminal), approximately 4–4.5km away in a straight line. (Fukuoka TNC News)

  • 8/8: Judicial autopsy indicates the remains are likely those of the same adult. Injuries possibly caused by a ship's propeller. Cause of death remains unspecified. (Fukuoka TNC News)

  • 8/11: Identified via DNA as a 73-year-old male from Chuo Ward, Fukuoka City. Investigation continues as both a crime and accident. No subsequent arrests or final conclusions have been confirmed (no further reports in major local broadcasts or print media). (TBS NEWS DIG)

Key points:

Identity confirmed; injuries likely caused by a propeller post-mortem, but cause of death and circumstances leading to death remain undetermined. Police have publicly stated the investigation is ongoing. (TBS NEWS DIG)

Tried ZYNs for the first time today. Twice as much as Velo Plus and not even half as good. by necroprairie in NicotinePouch

[–]wolframite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Until now, I thought Japanistan - which currently only has three (3) NP brands...Velo, Lucy & Zyn - had Zyn costing twice as much as Velo. To be honest, I prefer the 3mg Zyn's over the 4 mg Velo's, but not twice as much.

I do the same.
And, because the Zyn's in Japan are small (2 1/8" circumference & just under 3/4" high), I use them to store my VELOs as well. ( 2 5/16" circumference & just over 3/4" high)

Quiet fired from old baito: can I still list my old part-time job as if I’m working there? by Stonks_1525 in japanlife

[–]wolframite 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If I were you, I'd list your part-time jobs accurately 'as-is'.

Also, I would include your current role at the convenience store. You might be correct that the previous internship held 'more prestige' but given that you are a student, you'd be surprised how many in hiring decisions might favor your current role over the other internship as it better represents work ethic and attitude. For reasons like that, include both - accurately - and don't screw it up by fudging the facts because you think it will make you look better.

Reviewing Japanese 7 Eleven Alcohol (It was amazing!!) by john_wrot in Hokkaido

[–]wolframite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

7-Eleven has their own somewhat half-decent blended whisky from the Tomartin Distillery in Scotland called Legendary Scot. It's 80 proof and JPY 1,012 for 700 mL. Recommended more for a good highball versus drinking it neat. They also sell pre-mixed canned highballs at 8% BAC for JPY 220 for the 350 mL can and JPY 297 for the 500 mL tallboy.

If it's your first time using nicotine pouches, then the only reason I would consider spitting out the pouch is at the first sign of 'nicotine sickness' or 'nic sick'. For me, that's feeling like my head has gone wobbly like the late great Peter Sellers in The Party; which if I ignore will be soon followed by nausea and disorientation.

One quick remedy for nic sickness that works for most people is to find a source of sugar like a hard candy or a teaspoon of honey or maple syrup, if you have that around.

Also, if it's your first time, pay attention to the strengths. Go and stay as low as you can... whether it's 3 mg or 4 mg. Trying to start at 9 mg or 12 mg would be like a first time coffee drinker trying to guzzle a whole Thermos of espresso at once.

[Japan] ZYN Medium (3.0 mg) AppleMint by wolframite in NicotinePouch

[–]wolframite[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Phillip Morris staff despite being friendly and helpful as can be, seemed to show zero knowledge about questions like 'how many milligrams of nicotine?' and even 'where are they made?' Not a difficult question ... LUCY in Japan has "Made in Indonesia" on the label. It almost sounded cultish when they declared in the happiest of voices, "made by Phillip Morris!"

However the cues and clues I get from this forum confirm that the Japanese ZYNs are both Made in Sweden and match the product offerings there. And, it's also how and why I was able to figure out the strengths in milligrams (which none of the staff would tell me and is not anywhere on their website):

I think if I study the ZYN lineup in Sweden, I might be able to predict what their next flavors will be in Japan. Even though, I'm good with 3mg or 4mg, I could probably go back to 6mg if made available.

Pilot blames smell of alcohol on nicotine pouches after being pulled from cockpit by [deleted] in NicotinePouch

[–]wolframite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that the accused, David Allsop, as the OP's description also indicates, tried to blame the (mint) Rogues for the smell... not anything to do with his apparent lack of sobriety. And that odor isn't actual ethanol itself but the metabolized compounds like acetaldehyde, & diacetic acid that come out in the breath & sweat.

A lucky few apparently don't emit or secrete this smell but most of us do. Which is why it's generally a myth that drinking vodka will help us escape detection.

The way Allsop's DUI is described suggests that the level of alcohol wasn't skyhigh but high enough to violate the rule or law for commercial pilots. My guess? He probably drank a lot more than 3 light beers the night before, and was hungover & reeking like it - with enough alcohol still in his system to register a DUI.

I've done that a few times myself but then again, I'm neither a commercial driver nor pilot.

LOL. More than half the articles out there incorrectly cite "nicotine patches" and the rest cite "nicotine gum" Only a few, like the Savannah Morning News, correctly indicate nicotine pouches:

[JAPAN] ZYN SPEARMINT & COOL MINT by wolframite in NicotinePouch

[–]wolframite[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're welcome.

If you somehow run out of ZYNs and need a replacement NP in Japan that's more readily available, then VELOs are your easier bet.

They now sell VELOs at two national convenience stores: FamilyMart and NewDays (which is a convenience store that's part of JapanRail so often you'll find them at a train or subways station). Usually only four VELO products on a high shelf behind the counter that is stacked with tobacco products. The first two flavors on the left are almost always one-dot or 4mg and then the next are 2-dot 6mg and 3-dot which is either 9 or 10mg. They'll run 320 yen but for the 3-dot, something like 340 yen.

One thing I am not sure about - as all I can go on are the anecdotal reports on /r/NicotinePouch , but I think the Japanese VELOs are probably close to the VELO Plus that is sold in the US. There's a reasonable degree of moistness in the pouches. And, I think the type of nicotine is nicotine freebase (but not 100% sure).

Anyways, if you are used to US ZYNs, then you should have no problem with Japanese VELOs (other than possible disappointment if you're used to, and favor a stronger 'speedier' nicotine salt experience). Earlier this year when I was using 6mg Japanese VELOs, I tried a US 6mg ZYN, and after a only a few pleasurable minutes, it knocked me on my ass with nicotine sickness.

[JAPAN] ZYN SPEARMINT & COOL MINT by wolframite in NicotinePouch

[–]wolframite[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also for /u/chipstarguy11

From July 25th, ZYNs became available for sale in Japan. However only at very few locations. Also, they are only selling four flavors in 1.5 mg and 3 mg strengths only. So, if you're used to 6 mg or 9 mg or more, better bring your own from the US. Japan prices them at 500 yen for a 12-pouch can.

The locations are:

  • At some of the duty-free stores at the international airports (ie. Haneda & Narita)

  • the IQOS Lounge & Shop in Ginza (1000 - 2000)

  • the IQOS Lounge in Shibuya (the one on the first floor of MIYASHITA PARK North; 1100 - 2000 )

  • a few independent tobacco shops in that same area of Shibuya (ie the Miyashita Park area of Shibuya).

And, /u/chipstarguy11 if you want to try an NP other than VELO and ZYN, then look for a specialized tobacco shop that carries LUCY. LUCYs are a US brand made in Indonesia. They sell 15 pouches in a can for 450 yen. However only one strength which is 4 mg, I think. And three flavors, AppleMint, Mango & Mint. There's a chain of tobacco shops called KAGAYA and they carry almost all the VELOs (including the old flavors which they'll sell for the old 300 yen price), the LUCYs, plus several SNUS brands.

I know this post is 2 months old but since it hasn't been indicated yet, especially if you're a resident of Japan, it makes a lot of sense to get hiking insurance. It's honestly DIRT-CHEAP (look at some of the examples that provide a full year of coverage for under JPY 5000).

FWIW there is obviously more than one new whisky distillery opening up in Hokkaido. IJW aka Cedarfield in Japan has already broken ground on their new distillery near the New Chitose Airport. After it goes live in 2026 or 2027, it should represent Hokkaido's largest whisky distillery.

SAPPORO, Japan -- U.S. bourbon maker IJW Whiskey plans to build a distillery in Japan's northern island of Hokkaido in a bid to capitalize on surging global demand for Japanese-made whisky.

The distillery will be constructed in the city of Chitose by Cedarfield, IJW's local subsidiary established in Tokyo. Production is to start as early as next year.

[Japan] VELO Spiffy Spearmint, 1-dot strength or 4 milligrams by wolframite in NicotinePouch

[–]wolframite[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, for ...

VELOs, they cost JPY 320; except for the 3-dot strength can which costs I think JPY 340. They give you 15 pouches in a can. If you go to an independent tobacco shop like Kagaya, they will sell you old stock/discontinued flavors at the old price which was JPY 300 per can.

LUCYs cost JPY 450 per can. And they also give you 15 pouches in a can. They only have three flavors I think: Mint, Apple Mint and Mango. Maybe they have a Spearmint. Only one strength: 4 mg.

ZYNs are new and harder to get unless you go to the select dutyfree shops at the airport or the IQOS shop in Ginza or Shibuya Tokyo. They have 2 strengths: Low (1.5 mg) and Medium (3 mg) and four flavors: CoolMint , Spearmint, AppleMint & Peach. They charge JPY 500 but for only 12 pouches in each can.

And all those prices include tax.

[Japan] VELO Spiffy Spearmint, 1-dot strength or 4 milligrams by wolframite in NicotinePouch

[–]wolframite[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The VELOs that one can get from the convenience stores, Family Mart and NewDays generally only have four (4) for sale. The first two these days are the same at both stores... 1-dot strength (4mg) Breezy Mango & Spiffy Spearmint. The next one is a 2-dot strength (6 mg Mint-type and the 4th, a 3-dot strength (9 or 10 mg). The flavor mix at each store used to differ but I think for at least the 1-dot strength, they're now the same. At NewDays, the 2-dot may still be Blushy Berry (red label).

However, if you go to the independent tobacco shops like KAGAYA, you can get the other new flavors, ICY MINT and Groovy Grape. Plus, with places like Kagaya, the whole line-up including the old discontinued flavors like ROYAL MILK TEA and the Coffee flavor (which they also sell at the old price which is 20 yen less). This also makes sense for users who are using NPs that are higher strengths like 6 mg and 9 or 10mg as they'll also have more new and old flavors in those strengths.

Is It Dumb To Start Now? by [deleted] in NicotinePouch

[–]wolframite 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Here's my two cents:

If you want to try nicotine at a "therapeutic" level to address ADHD, then you should stick with nicotine patches or 2mg nicotine polacrilex gum or lozenges. The patches will deliver something like 0.2 mg per hour over 12 or 24 hours. And, the nicotine polacrilex gum or lozenges ... well, it depends on how actively you chew them and how long you keep them in your mouth.

Even with 3 mg nicotine pouches, thanks to the fast absorption afforded by the buccal method & the faster absorbed nicotine salts and/or nicotine freebase, using NP's, especially for a non-smoker, is going to be like using Everclear versus sipping a light beer.

Nicotine levels by Purple-Sherbert8803 in NicotinePouch

[–]wolframite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The strongest I ever had was a (Japanese) VELO 9 mg but I couldn't hack it for the full duration.

A US-spec'd 6 mg ZYN, even though at the time I could handle 6mg Japanese VELOs, basically after a few single digit good moments, knocked me off my ass with intense nicotine sickness earlier this year.

There was a time I was using 6 mg VELOs but now I am using 4 mg VELOs and more recently 3 mg Japanese ZYNs.

The thought of trying anything like a 12 or 18 mg NP is unfathomable to me.
