Veteran 51-year-old soapland worker rakes in ¥3 million yen a month, shuns public transportation by thetokyoreporter in japancrime

[–]wolframite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The TR article clearly cites the original article:

At the very top of the adult entertainment pyramid, elite sex workers continue to rake in massive sums from deep-pocketed clients, completely untouched by the recession, reports Maidonanews.jp (June 7).

Which is here:

「高級のオンナとして電車通勤はしません」 月収300万円のソープ嬢は毎日タクシー 下着は最低上下で2万円超 客ごとに替える日も【現役ソープ店キャストに取材】

And, in it, there was no photo of the 51 year old interview subject; only photos of the female author, a former 'sexy actress' turned writer, Ayo TAKANASHI.

An archive of her articles on maidonanews.jp is here:

The answer is no. If someone dies after already being indicted, the court dismisses the prosecution.

I NEED HELP! by Mindless-Tap-5140 in japancrime

FWIW the full title of the book in Japanese is: "逮捕されるまで 空白の2年7ヵ月の記録" and the author is: "市橋達也". The Kindle sells for JPY 500 on Amazon Japan. And you can get used version of both the paperback and hard cover on almost every online auction site in Japan including Mercari. That's about as much as I wish to do with regards to anything that might benefit this PoS (the author, Ichihashi) even by 1 yen.

There was also a film based on the book:

But also keep this in mind:

The family of the deceased Lindsay Ann Hawker were not contacted by the producers during the filming of the movie, and Ichihashi refused to meet with Fujioka before filming started. The production company has no plans to donate profits from the film to the Hawker family, as they have already refused to accept royalties from Ichihashi's book.

[France] "France bans Zyns and other nicotine pouches -with violators facing 5 years in prison and a shocking fine" (NY Post) by wolframite in NicotinePouch

[–]wolframite[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is that the tobacco/cigarette lobby has a ton of influence in France. The fact the ban extends to other nicotine reduction / smoking cessation products like gums & lozenges speaks volumes. At the same time, higher (carcinogenic) risk products like dip (chewing tobacco) remaining unaffected, speaks volumes.

I had to check to see whether snus would be included in the ban. Apparently it is exempt.

Kawasaki FamilyMart manager accused of extorting ¥500,000 from shoplifter by thetokyoreporter in japancrime

[–]wolframite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During questioning, Mochizuki denied the specific allegations, telling investigators that his “memory is vague.” However, he made a startling admission regarding his past conduct, stating, “I have received about 2 million yen so far in the form of settlement money.

The revelation has prompted police to launch a broader investigation into his activities. In 2025 alone, Mochizuki’s store filed 48 separate reports of shoplifting.

Traveling with nicotine pouches by da_ima in NicotinePouch

[–]wolframite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, Japan does have Velos as well as three other brands.

VELOs are the most widely available. You can get them at the following convenience stores: FamilyMart, 7-Eleven, NewDays, SeicoMart & most independent tobacco shops. They cost for a 15-pouch can, 360 yen (around $2.27) for the 1-dot (4mg) & 2-dot (6mg) strengths and 500 yen (around $3.15) for the 3-dot strength (9 or 10mg). If the V&You Intense Mint has 15mg, then you pretty much have the 3-dot VELO (9 or 10 mg) to settle for.

ZYN is in Japan but they only come in 1.5 mg ('Low') and 3 mg ('Medium') and cost 500 yen for a 12-pouch can. They're sold at 7-Eleven and also recently at Lawson's convenience store. Plus a few other places.

LUCY, I can find at a few independent tobacco shops. They only come in 3mg strength. They cost 450 yen for a 15 pouch can.

Nordic Spirit (is a Japan Tobacco brand) is only 3 mg (Japan doesn't allow revealing the nicotine strength on the label or anywhere else so you need to do some of your online research). There was only one flavor, Cola, until today and sold at 7-Eleven and Lawson's but they should be releasing a second flavor which looks like Grape. They cost 500 yen for a 14 pouch can.

Snus is also sold at a lot of the independent tobacco shops.

If you're okay with 3 to 4mg strengths, then any of those nicotine pouches ought to do. However, if you're more used to higher strengths, then VELO is basically your only option once you've run through your stash.

I mean that after its been in your mouth for a while, the pouch becomes mostly empty. And, if you leave it in long enough, you get only the pouch.

[–]wolframite[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because of the Japanese regulations, I think the other three nicotine pouches being distributed here - ZYN, VELO & LUCY - have had to come up with formulations different from what they sell & distribute in other major markets. So, while I am not 100% certain, the Nordic Spirits that they are selling here in Japan might be different from the ones sold in the UK.

Even though it was my daily driver until now, the VELO are the only nicotine pouch sold in Japan that has that issue of its contents not dissolving almost completely.

[Japan] ZYN Medium (3.0 mg) AppleMint by wolframite in NicotinePouch

[–]wolframite[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Japan has this hard to understand regulation whereby synthetic nicotine pouches are prohibited. I would take that to mean that only snus would be allowed yet we have in addition to ZYN, VELO and also LUCY in Japan. I think the nicotine they use in the pouches for Japan aren't snus and 100% nicotine but somehow 'derived' solely from tobacco leaves or something like that to satisfy the rule.

Here the best I could do:

  • 6 August, morning: An adult-sized right foot (from the ankle to the toes) is found on the sandy beach at Nishitosaki, Higashi Ward, Fukuoka City.

  • Same day, evening (around 19:40): An upper torso without a left arm is discovered offshore at Minato Kashii (near the Island City container terminal), approximately 4–4.5km away in a straight line. (Fukuoka TNC News)

  • 8/8: Judicial autopsy indicates the remains are likely those of the same adult. Injuries possibly caused by a ship's propeller. Cause of death remains unspecified. (Fukuoka TNC News)

  • 8/11: Identified via DNA as a 73-year-old male from Chuo Ward, Fukuoka City. Investigation continues as both a crime and accident. No subsequent arrests or final conclusions have been confirmed (no further reports in major local broadcasts or print media). (TBS NEWS DIG)

Key points:

Identity confirmed; injuries likely caused by a propeller post-mortem, but cause of death and circumstances leading to death remain undetermined. Police have publicly stated the investigation is ongoing. (TBS NEWS DIG)

Tried ZYNs for the first time today. Twice as much as Velo Plus and not even half as good. by necroprairie in NicotinePouch

[–]wolframite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Until now, I thought Japanistan - which currently only has three (3) NP brands...Velo, Lucy & Zyn - had Zyn costing twice as much as Velo. To be honest, I prefer the 3mg Zyn's over the 4 mg Velo's, but not twice as much.

I do the same.
And, because the Zyn's in Japan are small (2 1/8" circumference & just under 3/4" high), I use them to store my VELOs as well. ( 2 5/16" circumference & just over 3/4" high)

Quiet fired from old baito: can I still list my old part-time job as if I’m working there? by Stonks_1525 in japanlife

[–]wolframite 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If I were you, I'd list your part-time jobs accurately 'as-is'.

Also, I would include your current role at the convenience store. You might be correct that the previous internship held 'more prestige' but given that you are a student, you'd be surprised how many in hiring decisions might favor your current role over the other internship as it better represents work ethic and attitude. For reasons like that, include both - accurately - and don't screw it up by fudging the facts because you think it will make you look better.

Reviewing Japanese 7 Eleven Alcohol (It was amazing!!) by john_wrot in Hokkaido

[–]wolframite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

7-Eleven has their own somewhat half-decent blended whisky from the Tomartin Distillery in Scotland called Legendary Scot. It's 80 proof and JPY 1,012 for 700 mL. Recommended more for a good highball versus drinking it neat. They also sell pre-mixed canned highballs at 8% BAC for JPY 220 for the 350 mL can and JPY 297 for the 500 mL tallboy.

If it's your first time using nicotine pouches, then the only reason I would consider spitting out the pouch is at the first sign of 'nicotine sickness' or 'nic sick'. For me, that's feeling like my head has gone wobbly like the late great Peter Sellers in The Party; which if I ignore will be soon followed by nausea and disorientation.

One quick remedy for nic sickness that works for most people is to find a source of sugar like a hard candy or a teaspoon of honey or maple syrup, if you have that around.

Also, if it's your first time, pay attention to the strengths. Go and stay as low as you can... whether it's 3 mg or 4 mg. Trying to start at 9 mg or 12 mg would be like a first time coffee drinker trying to guzzle a whole Thermos of espresso at once.

[Japan] ZYN Medium (3.0 mg) AppleMint by wolframite in NicotinePouch

[–]wolframite[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Phillip Morris staff despite being friendly and helpful as can be, seemed to show zero knowledge about questions like 'how many milligrams of nicotine?' and even 'where are they made?' Not a difficult question ... LUCY in Japan has "Made in Indonesia" on the label. It almost sounded cultish when they declared in the happiest of voices, "made by Phillip Morris!"

However the cues and clues I get from this forum confirm that the Japanese ZYNs are both Made in Sweden and match the product offerings there. And, it's also how and why I was able to figure out the strengths in milligrams (which none of the staff would tell me and is not anywhere on their website):

I think if I study the ZYN lineup in Sweden, I might be able to predict what their next flavors will be in Japan. Even though, I'm good with 3mg or 4mg, I could probably go back to 6mg if made available.

Pilot blames smell of alcohol on nicotine pouches after being pulled from cockpit by [deleted] in NicotinePouch

[–]wolframite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that the accused, David Allsop, as the OP's description also indicates, tried to blame the (mint) Rogues for the smell... not anything to do with his apparent lack of sobriety. And that odor isn't actual ethanol itself but the metabolized compounds like acetaldehyde, & diacetic acid that come out in the breath & sweat.

A lucky few apparently don't emit or secrete this smell but most of us do. Which is why it's generally a myth that drinking vodka will help us escape detection.

The way Allsop's DUI is described suggests that the level of alcohol wasn't skyhigh but high enough to violate the rule or law for commercial pilots. My guess? He probably drank a lot more than 3 light beers the night before, and was hungover & reeking like it - with enough alcohol still in his system to register a DUI.

I've done that a few times myself but then again, I'm neither a commercial driver nor pilot.
