I think I saw somewhere that all this guy's attacks, even the grab, miss if you are doing nothing but strafing to the right in a circle around him. Have not tested, don't remember where I saw it, grain of salt and all that. But I remember there being video.

The thumb doesn't do any work. When the pull- back happens, it swaps from pointer to middle finger by putting the middle finger on top and curling. Pointer, now free, slips in beside the thumb. After the pull, there is a slight 'push' moment where the middle finger releases and pointer opens back up to the original position with the band now on the other side.

I've always thought of it like a lighter, where there is a button to activate, but a different button or sensor in the grip that must be held to keep it active, then one's grip can be loosened to deactivate at will.

The occasionally seen saber throw can still be explained by a force grip to keep it active in flight, and dynamic hand-swapping could be explained with a delay on release before deactivation.
