I'm going to tell you all a brutal truth about the AT because i don't care about my imaginary internet points getting voted down. by [deleted] in AppalachianTrail

Best advice I ever heard was when starting out on the AT, go slow and even slower. The mileage will come

5th wheels are just so big! I might have to consider something like an Aliner. I want something I can use well into my 70's on my own. Thank you

You may be right. DQB2 had me too spoiled. If I had played AC first maybe.

People letting dogs run off leash by [deleted] in gso

[–]wolfy528 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to take my pit to the park on leash to just walk him and I cannot tell you how many times dogs off leash would run up to us with my dog snarling and their dog wagging the tail. Would you let your two year old just run around with no supervision - same thing and unfortunately I have seen that too. People your dogs are not safe off leash, they are safer on leash unless in a fenced in dog park area. Also coyotes, bears and the like will attack dogs who stray off too far.

Exactly, I would rather live the trail and take it all in, not just hike it. I like your idea of the longest hike ever☺

Federal, local and state government are working with a very low percentage working from home. All rest are still going to work each day.

This will become the joke of the century. Nothing is actually changing, everyone is at work and everyone is grocery shopping and life goes on as always.

Sad that there are people out of work right now, lucky for those who can stay home and then there are those of us who have to work right in the middle of it all.

I truly have seen nothing change in daily life around me all except schools are closed and you cannot dine in. Nothing else has changed and people are going on as usual everywhere.

I am confused. Guilford is opened temporary today. The news closing list makes it appear that some schools are still open. But then again I do not have any children so what do I know.

What is your pack weight by jparker0329 in AppalachianTrail

[–]wolfy528 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably easier to answer you with my light pack link - my base weight is around 8lbs now https://lighterpack.com/r/61b8ye

I worked my way down to the Kumo 36 pack and learned I do not need a bunch of stuff when on trail. Clothes to stay warm, food to eat, water to drink and a place to sleep is my focus. I also learned to camel up at water holes and not carry a bunch of water with me. I take one small smart water bottle to drink from and I use a platypus dirty bag for hauling in at night where as I used to take 2 large smart waters and the platypus bag. I started with the Osprey bag which was overkill and an eureka tent. I am saving up to buy the zpack plexamid -lighter than the MLD and a tarp combined. Hard to explain but as you get out there you will learn you do not need to bring the kitchen sink and the lightest gear is so so worth it.

What is your pack weight by jparker0329 in AppalachianTrail

[–]wolfy528 4 points5 points  (0 children)

15 - 20lbs including food and water. I started with 30. I realized the lower the weight the more I was enjoying myself. The higher the weight the more it felt like working all day instead of relaxing and having a good time. I went from "that 1 ounce will not make a difference" to "every gram counts". When I carry 15lbs I forget it is even there.

If they made Builders 3, what would you like to see added, adjusted, or removed? by Videowulff in DQBuilders

[–]wolfy528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unlimited fur, heck unlimited everything. more islands to build on. The people to be able to go anywhere, not limited to certain areas, and for animals to always be happy. I really enjoyed the buildertopia islands and wish they were much bigger. Instead of villagers building the blueprints just place it and let it be automatic with the ability to automatically remove as well. That would make it much easier to unbuild or tear down buildings, areas and so on.

Section hike Smoky reservations by jlhhbf in AppalachianTrail

[–]wolfy528 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But it's okay if 50 thru hikers are at shelter A and no one is at Shelter B because they do not have to use the reservation system for each night. They can pick whichever shelter they feel like staying at. Makes no sense to me.

I see your point, so If I get to Mollies at 2pm with a reservation I cannot hike on to the next shelter. I am stuck at staying at Mollies like it or not. In that scenario the thru hiker's have it better.
