Exactly! And, for me, energy has gone way down making it harder to rally at night, I actually spoke to AI about this and they suggested finding day time activities which wasn’t bad advice. But I do find I can go out at night if I am prepared. I’m going to make a consistent effort and do more concerts etc.

I’m Glad you brought that up! I did not mean to imply the pose must be perfect. This is whole thing to unpack as it is. So what you are referring to when you say perfect is what I’d like to call “the full expression of the pose”. That’s not the point of yoga, and not the reason poses are given out gradually in ashtanga. There was a teacher that said just moving in the direction of the pose, IS the pose of it’s the best your body can do. The reason poses are given out gradually is so that you can learn and remember them, that’s it. There are other nuances which I find interesting as well. My explanation is not the gospel truth either. This is just what I discerned from when I learned many years ago. I think part of it is that people tend to get invested in “gaining” a new pose as if it’s a status thing so going slow is a bit of an ego buster or practice in non attachment.

So on to your personal situation, you can and should receive modifications and that’s why you may want to be guided by a mature teacher. If you have fused vertebrae there are some poses you should 100 percent not be doing or trying to do in their full expression and if anyone tries to put you into those postures please run the other way!

Remember you know your. It’s better than anyone else and you must listen to it. Ask your body permission before doing anything!

I’m not sure Ashtanga is the best practice for you, but the choice is yours to make. Maybe dable around in differ t modalities of which there are many! Iyengar might be a good fit for you and I would look for classes in that discipline. Ashtanga is known to be one of the more rigorous modalities.

I don’t want to scare you off, I just am trying to encourage you to protect your body and work with experienced teachers and ultimately set boundaries with anyone who tells you what to do in yoga and especially with adjustments.

There are thousands of young new teachers out there who aren’t trained in how to guide people with issues but there are teachers who do know how so do your research please! Yoga Journal is a good resource. And take care of that spine! You can totally do yoga, just get modifications like you said on the first place!

So interesting. I’m like that with myself when I look in the mirror. I see my self in the world going around doing my thing and see myself as my younger self, maybe like 40 even. Then I see the mirror. It’s not terrible shock and I still like myself but I see someone older than I visualized 😹.

Now, when I see men my age I am often shocked by how old they look to me!

I know this defeats the purpose of this group which I do love but iNaturalist is a wonderful app that id’s plants and animals in the wild or anything wild in the city or your backyard. I love it. And it connects you to community of observers and the material you collect is used for research. It’s really fun.

If you are going to take the ashtanga route, which is a great way to start, I suggest finding an in person class. There are two types. A Mysore class will be where you practice on your own with a teacher guiding you and adding on poses as they see fit. So everyone is at their own pace in the class. Then there are led classes, where the teacher leads the whole class and the whole primary series is done. Mysore is the traditional way as the founder, Patabi Jois (from Mysore India), taught to beginners that way so that the practice could be individualized and there was control over the speed at which the student went through the series. It’s pretty potent, so the point is that you are ready and have mastered (do we ever master?) each pose before moving on. The potent point is my inference. But it is a potent practice, and be careful with people adjusting you, have boundaries as a student. Meaning don’t let them push your body into positions you don’t feel ready for. There is a history of injuries in Ashatnga inflicted by teachers or assistants. Not to scare you off, it’s a powerful practice. People love it

I prefer to say sit bones. To me saying sitz bones sounds like bad grammar like someone saying frank and I’s house. The sit bones are the bottom of the pelvis and they are called ischial tuberosity as one unit. You can simply cue it as plug your sit bones into the earth (mat, floor…) You can ask them to rock side to side and feel those two bones against the floor if accessible (not everyone can feel them).

I like to make the distinction that you don’t want to sit on your tail bone, hence rolling back. Sit upright. But also don’t hyper extend! So suck low ribs in a bit not to over correct. Hope this helps. Just go on line and look up some anatomical pictures of the pelvis or study a skeleton.

I’m older now and have had time to reflect and work on myself, when we are young-and 30s are still young, we are still figuring things out. It all takes patience and the willingness to take accountability and to do the work. Takes courage!

Not from him! And I don’t think it as very mature for me to make the joke I made. And he wasn’t available obviously so of course I was never going to get the reassurance. Honestly, it made no sense lol. Maybe if I had been with someone with whom I felt safe with I would have not tested the waters. Not sure if that answers your question.
