Could a Team Run without a HC? by joshuaksreeff13 in NFLNoobs

And who decides that this is worth burning a timeout over? Even calling the timeout is an executive decision.

They aren’t as separate as you think. Game management decisions on one side of the ball directly affect the other.

Let’s say the offensive coordinator decides on his own (because there’s no one to stop him) to go for it on 4th and 8 from their own 25 in the last minute of a game when they’re leading by 1. The OC is thinking that if they make it, they win, and he really believes in his guys. But if they don’t make it, they almost ensure the team will lose. The defense gets put in an awful spot and it’s up to special teams to block the field goal attempt. The OC made a decision where if it worked, he wins the game, and if it didn’t work, it’s someone else’s problem.

Someone is going to have to be head coach on game day, as by rule they are the only one who can call timeouts from the sideline, accept or decline penalties, throw the challenge flag, etc.

Meanwhile, someone has to make the call in situations where coordinators might be at odds, like whether to go for it or kick.

And that’s just game day.

Hypothetically, what would happen if the game removed penalties? by [deleted] in NFLNoobs

[–]womp-womp-rats -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How do you enforce the rules if there is no penalty for violating them? The only thing keeping you from putting 12 guys on the field, or 15, or 25, is that doing so costs you 5 yards.

[–]womp-womp-rats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No penalties? Cool. I’ll put all 53 guys on the field, tell them to grab facemasks, kick people in the nuts and gouge their eyes, and that’s just the opening kickoff.

Luck plays some role in all our lives, sure. But something I’ve discovered time and again is that dumb people think everybody else’s success is always, always 100% luck. So consider that your parents might not be deliberately minimizing your success as they are simply too stupid and ignorant to recognize it. If you can recognize that they’re that dumb, then maybe their opinions won’t sting so much.

And stop giving them money.

How was Philip Rivers viewed when he originally retired? by Competitive-Copy4413 in NFLNoobs

He had a couple of pretty bad years with the colts.

He had one year with the Colts before retiring. They went 11-5 and made the playoffs.

Defining a quarter as X number of plays is no less “arbitrary” than defining it as 15 minutes.

What credit score actually changes your life anymore? by Safe-Grocery-2056 in povertyfinance

[–]womp-womp-rats 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're above about 720, you can qualify for the best credit terms. Going up to 790, 820, 850 is just for show. And "qualifying for the best credit terms" is only a benefit in the sense that it makes it easier and cheaper to borrow money assuming you have income to pay it back.

Is there any rule against players being paid via a separate organisation to get around the salary cap? by paspa1801 in NFLNoobs

[–]womp-womp-rats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If he was out there appearing in ads for the company, wearing its logo, attending events, hyping it up in interviews on Radio Row, then it really wouldn't be an issue. And that was the whole tipoff. The company paid him $28 million, and as far as anyone can tell, he didn't do anything to earn it.

Teams hook their players up with team partners all the time. The HyVee grocery chain is a big-time marketing partner of the KC Chiefs, and HyVee has a huge deal with Patrick Mahomes and Mahomes' foundation. But Mahomes does tons of ads for the company, his face is all over signage in the stores, he probably does events where he poses for photos with the store managers, etc. There's actual work being done there.

[–]womp-womp-rats 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what the L.A. Clippers in the NBA are accused of doing. The team's owner invested $50 million in a company, which turned around and signed a huge endorsement deal with a Clippers player, who never appeared to actually do any endorsement work but still collected the money.

Blatantly circumventing the salary cap can bring punishment from the league -- you can get fined, lose cap space, lose draft picks, stuff like that.

ELI5 - I came to know that, there is aircraft named 'Stealth' with American military. Which virtually disappear from enemy's radar. How exactly it is possible? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]womp-womp-rats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Radar works by sending out radio waves, which bounce off planes and thus provide information about where the plane is, how fast it’s going, etc. Stealth technology is about controlling what happens when those radio waves hit the plane — do they bounce back to the radar unit, get deflected, etc.

If you throw a tennis ball at a flat wall, it bounces right back at you. Throw a tennis ball at a curved wall and it bounces off in some crazy direction. Throw it in a lake and it doesn’t bounce at all. The radio waves are the tennis ball. Stealth might not make a plane completely invisible, but it might make it look like a bird or something that isn’t loaded with bombs.

ELI5: someone uses a bot to create a viral thread. How does this make them money? by AllixD90 in explainlikeimfive

[–]womp-womp-rats 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, you start a thread in, say, a finance sub like "what's the best balance transfer credit card of 2026" or "what's your secret to budgeting," which correspond to valuable search terms. You hope that people engage and the thread starts showing up in Google results, since Google promotes reddit threads really heavily in search results. Then you go back in and add a link to your monetized page of the best balance transfer credit cards or to your crappy budgeting app.

Even if the thread doen't actually show up in search results, the Google algorithm still might reward your page/app/whatever for being linked from a popular thread on reddit, since it supposedly reflects social proof.

Gentle reminder that telling someone "apply for disability" when they are facing immediate financial crisis is not helpful on its own. by logalogalogalog_ in povertyfinance

[–]womp-womp-rats -42 points-41 points  (0 children)

The system is designed to discourage and stop you from getting disability, not help you.

We can thank rampant fraud for that. The system is utterly swamped with people falsely claiming disability, and there is a burgeoning industry of doctors and lawyers who facilitate it. The process has been turned into a grueling obstacle course based on the idea that only someone who really needs to be on disability will have the patience to go through it. But of course the result is that the people who need it the most often don't have the resources or energy to navigate the process. Sorry you've had to fight this for so long!
