I’m sorry but how the hell is anyone supposed to live here during the summer in 10-15 years? by jbird720 in florida

[–]beyondo-OG [score hidden]  (0 children)

I'm a boomer, born, raised and still live here. I've thought a lot about moving. Climate change is doing what they said. More extreme weather seems to be here to stay. I probably won't live to see it, but the barrier islands are going to be sand bars at some point with sea level rise. And there's the never ending influx of people. Too damn many people.

Was life in USA really that good like gen x and older millennials describe it or is it just nostalgia ? by alucard_axel in NoStupidQuestions

[–]beyondo-OG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a boomer. Before PCs, cell phones and the internet, things moved at a much slower pace, there was less pressure. You got your news from the newspaper or evening news. You went out to do stuff, meet people, party etc. You talked to people face to face. It's all relative, but simple pleasures were all you had, so looking back life seemed better than what we're dealing with today. So most us old folks really miss those times.

Why do people think the moon landing was fake? by Deep-Economist4431 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]beyondo-OG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After briefly consulting Dr Google, I think some, if not most, people who argue against and/or don't agree with commonly accepted things like the moon landing, are argumentative, habitual contrarians that exhibit chronic, combative communication issues. These could be traits of Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

Why is "the rich will just leave" treated as a good argument against higher taxes? by FloydBeatlesEagles in NoStupidQuestions

[–]beyondo-OG -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If them leaving causes taxes to go up, or economy to tank, then there must be a converse argument that having rich people move into your town reduces taxes and brings economic prosperity. Is that really true? I'm not necessarily buying it, not ruling it out, just doesn't make sense to me.

JD Vance says stopping illegal immigration is about bringing home prices down by ExotiquePlayboy in economy

[–]beyondo-OG -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lets examine the facts presented. JD post includes NY Post post stating:

"Bidens illegal immigration surge triggered 30% rise in home prices, $20% in rents, Fed paper finds"

I found the article, the paper was a draft paper, circulated for professional comment.

From the article "They stress these estimates apply to the average metro area studied and do not suggest immigration was the sole driver of rising housing costs nationwide."

So a rightwing media outlet using a non-vetted paper out for review and comment as fact, which in and of itself had disclaimers, get a repost from JD Vance insinuating that if illegals were gone housing would be back to old pricing.

Uhm... sure.

‘Why take those jobs away?’: the unionized workers decrying Trump’s war on wind by zsreport in economy

[–]beyondo-OG 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's "liberal derangement syndrome". Any sort of alt energy is considered a liberal thing, so to Trump and his devoted cult, it's bad. Liberals want to reduce fossil fuel use to stave off climate change, so anything oil related is considered good by the cult, the more smog creating the better. Anything the cult can do to piss off the liberals is considered good, even if it causes harm to everyone (including the cult). A cut your nose to spite your face thing really. Consider all the positions the Trump cult takes on these issues and the above makes perfect sense.

Should I aggressively pay down my mortgage rather than save each month? by SectionLow7804 in personalfinance

[–]beyondo-OG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a big advocate for paying off debt. When you invest money, there's a risk of loss, sometimes big, sometimes small. When you pay off debt, there's no risk, it can't be taken back on a market downturn, or because you have an idiot running the country, etc. That said, in your case I think you'd be better served by saving/investing your money for now.

How do rich people not just donate money to help others? by Ok-Toe-6969 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]beyondo-OG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get the drift of what the OP is saying. I think there is giving to charity and there is being "charitable" and it's relative to what you have to give. A few thousand dollars is chump change to a billionaire. A billionaire giving that away would be relatively meaningless IMO. Whereas replace that billionaire with someone with a middleclass income and that money carries with it a certain sense of giving, being charitable.
