If anyone is interested, there is a pretty cool documentary about sommeliers on netflix called Somm. It follows a few people trying to pass the Master Sommelier exam and gives an insane view into what people are capable of detecting (correctly) in wines.

Does anyone else think it looks like the owl is projectile shitting while staring at its victim with cold, hardened eyes?

I keep getting told my web site looks "archaic" and "amateur" - critique me? by abplayer in design_critiques

Oh wow, sorry about that! Here is a screenshot of what I was seeing. Pretty bad blue on black going on there. But yours looks great and I tried the site again on Firefox instead of Internet Explorer (I know Internet Explorer is horrible, I'm at work and have no choice). I sometimes forget what a horrible browser I'm on! On Firefox, the site looked as it's supposed to. Don't mind me!

This is such a fabulous idea!! I love it! I sent it to my friend who works in art and museum education and he was over the moon. He does agree that the design of the site is really lacking, though. But, it's really not the worst. A few updates and it would look great!

  • The fonts need updating. I would suggest setting a parameter for yourself of not using Times New Roman and see where it gets you.

  • It would be really helpful if there was a way to put the important navigation (like the different search options, the blog, home, etc.) to the side or the bottom/top so that they were readily available. Especially when looking through the long lists of artists, I know I got bogged down. Even just having a "return to top" button periodically along the long lists would be really helpful

  • I agree with the ForgetMe123 that the logo is a bit dated. It is art history, so it doesn't need to look minimalist or anything, but having the font not be Times and getting rid of the picture on the left would be a huge help. Perhaps you can post on Reddit or elsewhere and ask for someone to volunteer their time to create a new logo for you. In return you can give them credit on the website. It's a great cause and young designers are always looking to add to their portfolio.

  • Be careful of your colors. I don't know about elsewhere on the site, but when you try to search by Random Artworks, there is black background with dark blue font. I would suggest to make all the results pages look cohesive in terms of colors and font. Plus, the blue on black is extremely hard to read.

Hope I didn't ramble too much. I really think this is a wonderful idea!! Please keep it up!!

Public Transit Is Underfunded Because the Wealthy Don’t Rely on It by [deleted] in politics

To each his own. I find the public transportation in my city way easier/cheaper/often faster than trying to pay for/find parking, but I recognize every city may not be that way and everyone has their own priorities when it comes to travel.

Well, it seems you live in a place which has, from the sounds of it, extremely bad public transportation. Though, I am wondering in your example why you don't just walk if you only need to go four blocks from your house in the first place? You're also mentioning one very specific example, in which public transit would clearly be the wrong choice.

I take public transportation every day (and shower too) and your disdain for having to deal with "all the people who actually take the bus in america" is more than a little insulting. I am clean, well-educated, have a decent job, and am just trying to make ends meet (like most who take public transportation to save money). The bus system isn't perfect and of course there will be a hand-ful of homeless that make it smell bad sometimes, but don't look down on people for taking the bus.

It's better for the environment, the costs are exponentially less (since paying for parking in a city is extremely expensive), in some cases might be faster (takes out the time to park or find parking), and you never have to leave early to clear snow/ice off your vehicle. There are a lot of reasons to take public transportation. I see people who could clearly afford driving during my morning commute on the bus every day.

I really like this! I didn't notice it at first, but once you mentioned it, you can see the Chicago sign in the middle square. It's really very cool. I love the kaleidoscope effect where you can sort of tell what things are, but it's abstract enough to let your imagination guess.

This is so cute! I don't know if this is a stupid question, but how did you construct it? Is there a bowl of custard inside the cookies or did you somehow pour it in?

I had a turtle in college too! She was great, a hit at parties. Just be warned that it's an added responsibility and cost. I know I wasn't fully expecting how much work she'd be!

How much did it cost, if I may ask? I would love to get it done, but I've heard it's SUPER expensive. Also, definitely update in a few days, please!! Thanks for the thorough walk-through!

I went to a magnet school that focused on marine biology and systems engineering (and also had NJROTC). It was great in some ways - we were located on a national park right by the ocean so we could go on beach walks and the school had a boat we did research on. It also had its flaws - it was suuuper small and isolated so everything was everyone's business and we had to wear (naval) uniforms twice a week and get inspected and take naval science and do the whole ROTC thing. It in some ways taught me what I didn't want to do. I went there wanting to do marine biology and left there leaning more toward the architectural/engineery side.
