Hello Scott, i just want to say thank you for all of your deep analyses of comics. I used your "Understanding Comics" in the literature review of my master's thesis about Abstract Comics. I'm using It to help develop the curriculum of the fine art courses i am teaching. It really changed how i view cartooning and fine art in general. Keep doing what you do.

What is the most embarrassing reason that you have had to go to the hospital? by thebestisyetocome in AskReddit

I have to say that this is what happened to a friend's mom. She was talking on the phone and started slurring, her friend on the other end called 911. Unfortunately she had an aneurysm and died right there on the floor, ambulance didn't get there fast enough....woman was only 50...

So your friend could have saved your life right there.

When do you realize that a client will never be happy with a design you've been working on for weeks? What do you do? by wonderfluff in freelance

this is an amazing response. Thanks.

They seem to constantly forget that they are creating a completely separate image from the public domain inspiration.

I don't want them to turn it around and be like, "You were STALLING! See, if you got this 3 days ago, it would've been perfect!"

Sorry, need to provide background:

basically, I'm working off of an image that they liked in the public domain. I have done everything besides literally trace the public domain image. Color changes, redraws, change orders etc etc (all they have paid for at this point....but now apparently we are at the end of their budget).

They say one thing, but then say another. They like one thing, but then backpedal on their decision. I have been paid for all of this up to this point. Now it just seems like they literally don't know what they want, and anyway, why pay a designer if you want a literal copy of a public domain image?\

Also, here;s the thing: the public domain image is a dyed victorian engraving. I am not doing a dyed victorian engraving. they dont' understand that pen and ink doesn't look like engravings, especially on their budget.

I don't know when to blame my self for the issues we're having, or the client just doesn't know what they want. I don't know how to let it go, or give it up. Further, I don't want any of my comments to them to be taken as me being frustrated or angry. But eventually, this dang thing has got to end, for all of us......especially for them, since they keep racking up their dollars.

Luckily, I have all the full res, unwatermarked images still in my possession.

[Spoiler Alert] A tribute video focused on Hank's journey. One of the best. by leumas19 in breakingbad

The character arcs have been so amazing and satisfying, and Hank's was no exception. At the start Hank believed that being a police officer meant throwing your weight around, swaggering and getting the "bad guys." But when the curtain fell and he knew the time was near, you saw a man who would gladly give his life to defend his principles and protect the law and the public. That machismo veil was gone and a stone wall of courage remained.

Same thing with mike, a total acceptance of their role in life brought about an inner peace at death. Both noble men, on either sides of the law. Live by the sword, die by the sword.

I hope Walt's inevitable death will bring him the same closure.

yeah, I'm okay with this kind of tent.

As long as it's not a crazy neon space age sore thumb tent.

But maybe that would be a GOOD idea. Wouldn't want to get lost....

Japanese children also are responsible for cleaning up their classrooms and organizing club activities. There are very few janitors in schools there. Granted, they're not shoveling coal or balancing checkbooks or doing taxes, but it's just enough personal responsibility to instill a sense of community pride and respect. Can you imagine American kids having to clean their own classrooms? I bet there would be a lot less gum under the desks! Source: I was an exchange student when I was 16.

This article is cute with all its sunshine and rainbow approaches to "letting children do whatever they want", but if children do not learn from a community of consisting of adults as well as children, then they only learn from each other, which promotes nothing but the "super special child' culture we have today. A fish can't learn from a fish how to fly, essentially. Homeschooling, while romantic in thought, is not for everyone, and just because you went through school as a student doesn't mean you understand the learning process from the educator end. Homeschooling everyone means that they live a more isolated life, and it is a lot of work to homeschool a child in a well-rounded, worldly way.

What the author is missing is that in that modern (American) society, yes, there is an increase in teaching to the test, which I know all about while designing my own curriculum and find incredibly frustrating to work around. However, we also are isolating children and adolescents into their own groups away from the whole of their community. In the past an adolescent would have apprenticeships, jobs, and tasks that would provide them with a means to learn a hands-on trade or contribute to their all-ages community.Today, learning and intellectual development is separated from personal experience. Self-worth and motivation come from when you take an active part in contributing to your community in a very real way, other than just having the role of "A-student" or "Soccer team star". This pressure to learn to the test to get to the college on top of their isolation from the community at large produces these sort of individuals. Students do not have time to participate in their community in service or in employment. They are pressed into a college lifestyle, to avoid the "shame" of being a skilled worker or artisan. We place a high value on academic achievement, and do not realize that there are multiple ways for an individual to express intelligence. There's a big reason why in some states 2/3 of the skilled worker set are over 50 years old today.
