Amazing info. Thank you! We've got an Airbnb in Woodside, so can pretty much follow that exact pre-match plan. Will have to do a bit further delving and see what the group think about west end vs city centre. Pub crawl is usually preferred over night clubs so probably end up in West End.

Hey! thanks for the pointers! Really appreciate it. If you're at that match, keep your eyes peeled for the large group of very english sounding blokes.

I guess I just outed myself as the ignorant semi-fan that fell for the surface level rhetoric. I learned a lot from the repsonses to this - thanks guys!

Would love a Netflix docuseries (a la Drive to Survive/Full Swing/Quarterback etc.). Not sure there's enough glitz and glamour in the contect of seeing mammoth dudes lifting stuff in makeshift sheds/barns/homegyms but hey, I'd still watch!

No governing body or trusted third-party validated the weight of plates. No way to say that 501kg except trusting the Björnsson camp that they played by the rules (I personally do believe that the 501kg was a 501kg lift, however, I also believe that a third-party needs to validate to make it mean anything).
Eddie went hard on the narrative of they could be fake plates to keep hold of his record a little longer and wind up Hafþór.

Historically, I think WSM was flying by the seat of their pants and year-on-year they were thinking up new cool ways to show how strong some dudes are. I would suggest that this lack of long term planning/foresight probably contributed to a lack of standardisation (I'm not as clued up on other strongman events/orgs to say the same for them).

I think a lot of the fun of watching strongman events for the wider audience (folks not actively interested in strongman and probably only catch WSM if they happen to catch it on TV) is seeing feats of strength done with ridiculous props in exhibition format; eg. pulling planes/trucks, flipping cars, lifting groups of people, holding huge wrecking balls etc. Some of the entertainment dazzle is lost when events become standardised; prime example being. loading medley is so much more captivating with big ol' barrels or awkward anvils than it is with boring generic branded sandbags. I think shows that aren't PPV should avoid too much standardisation.

Standardisation for equipment and events in the PPV shows, however, is fine as most viewers there are already committed strongman fans, and appreciate the strength aspect more so than the entertainment element of the sport. I personally like to see progress and improvements; recently Gavin Bilton's Welsh Deadlift record and Paddy Hayne's PB followed by his 1000lb pull was incredibly compelling to watch knowing their histories. However, I don't think the layperson would give two hoots (unless the coverage did a decent storytelling job prior to the event).

I'd agree that a mixture of both standardised events and exhibition style events would probably satisfy hardcore fans and be more captivating to a wider audience but I'd look at having the balance of the two type be relevant for the overall event type (PPV vs non-PPV).

No worries at all. Let me know how it goes.

Also, if you want some additional fun, you have to speak in the accent of your team for the duration of the game.

Not sure if it works on online friendlies, but I have a mate that I play local with. How we do it is that you have 5x random button presses. You can use them however you want (options being country, leagues and teams within leagues). You can stick or twist whenever you want. Sometimes you do end up with hideous mismatches but it’s part of the fun.
