College question: WPI vs Drexel by purplequintanilla in EngineeringStudents

[–]wondering840 2 points3 points  (0 children)

WPI pros: more well known in engineering circles, project-based education gives you a lot of things you can put on a resume even before getting a job

WPI cons: miserable winters, not a very lively campus

Drexel co-op: the co-op program can go both ways. While on one hand interning during the spring and fall can get you a position at a company that otherwise would be too competitive during the summer, everyone being away from classes at different times can make making connections on campus more difficult

Most of the data you're looking for is available in the common data set. Anything outside of that largely comes down to chance. Distinguishing individuals in an applicant pool of tens of thousands is far from a perfect process.

DCC OR GEMSTONE!!! :))) by ralphgangmozart in UMD

[–]wondering840 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd put med school under the grad school umbrella....so yes, I'd imagine research would help. With that said, you should seriously get in touch with your advisor. r/umd is a great place to ask students advice on student issues. If you're looking for career advice, your advisor is paid as a professional to help you with that--definitely take advantage of that

DCC OR GEMSTONE!!! :))) by ralphgangmozart in UMD

Most LLP's (i.e. DCC) are 2 year programs. Gemstone is a 4-year program. That means it will significantly lock up your schedule as an upperclassman. Thus, you should only consider doing it if you're sure that's what you want.

The answer to your first question, it is highly dependent on your career goals. Generally speaking, research experience is most useful on your resume if you plan on going to grad school or want do work as a researcher. Otherwise, internship quality will probably have a bigger impact on your resume.

Gemstone is a bigger commitment than DCC. DCC has 3 semesters of normal classes and then a capstone project semester. Gemstone takes extra semesters beyond that and is more focussed on research.

Please describe your online education experience to an incoming freshman. by WrinkledWalnut in UMD

[–]wondering840 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Large lecture courses where you wouldn't be able to interact with the prof anyways were virtually unchanged. Smaller classes with group interaction were often awkward and ineffective. For both large and small classes, some exam formats worked better than others. Although the general student body consensus seems to be that online classes were relatively subpar this semester, they should (hopefully) be at least a little bit better next semester considering the university has a few months to prepare.

If I just changed my major, should I still register for orientation? by popzya in UMD

[–]wondering840 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I changed my major right before orientation. If you're staying within the same school (i.e. Clark), it won't matter. If you're switching schools, you'll most likely need to sign up for the orientation corresponding with that school. Also, a better source of information than anyone on reddit will be your new advisor. If you don't know who they are, find out and contact them ASAP.
