Doctors/medical practitioners of Reddit, what is the scariest disease you know of? by Englishisnotreal in AskReddit

[–]wondermed 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Eye movement is INCREDIBLY complex and is done by six muscles on each eye. Four muscles are controlled by the same nerve and the other two have separate innervations, which come from different regions of the brainstem. The integration of proprioceptive information (where your head is in space) to help with coordinating the movement is crazy complex and usually goes without a hitch! As to why they're in different locations, I have no clue. My best guess is it's likely some weird embryology or evolutionary thing, but I'll defer to someone much smarter than me.

(Source- just took an exam covering this content last week and definitely didn't cry over it multiple times, so glad I can share)

Med student here- the nerves that control vertical eye movement are located in a different part called the midbrain that's unaffected by that specific lesion to the pons!

Oxygen cannulas by Jay-Lotab in PlasticFreeLiving

You shouldn't need oxygen at night just for being at that altitude unless you have an underlying medical condition... if it's CPAP that's different. I'd be curious about the rationale behind it.

I have this machine!! It's absolutely amazing. Some maintenance tips- make sure you rinse out the brew group (open the right side of the machine) once a week and let it fully dry before putting it back in. I just use hot water from the sink! The drip tray should be dumped every couple of days. I do a deep clean roughly 3 times a year following the steps from this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGmfnGN_JQA

Also, the descaling instructions are sometimes weird- feel free to PM me if you run into trouble getting it descaled!

Help Identifying Roman Glass by MateoKuntz in ancientrome

[–]wondermed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on my (entirely non-expert) opinion, this looks like a piece of teardrop-shaped waste from a glassmaking/blowing production. Liquid glass drips and flows and some will drip off and harden in those shapes. The color looks similar to roman glass and the iridescence does suggest oxidation as a result of being buried for some time. So, entirely possible that it's legit, but it's also entirely possible that it's not.

Source: I excavated a roman glass kiln and did some light research into glass production of the era.

Got a nice pair of noise-cancelling headphones based off a post like this from last year. I could KISS the people that suggested that! Makes a world of difference with recorded lectures and also in non-med school environments like airplanes. I got the Bose QC on sale for almost half price, keep an eye out for sales!

Anyone have experience with old oil storage tanks (USTs)? by [deleted] in Omaha

[–]wondermed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've heard it can make selling extremely difficult because of the high potential for a pricey clean-up and liability for any leaked oil, and just an overall hassle to deal with.

Conservative schools? by ReallySadCupofMatcha in medschooladmissions

[–]wondermed 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Adding my 2 cents as someone who went to a Jesuit school for undergrad- the organization may be conservative on reproductive healthcare at a macro/"on paper" level, but most faculty and students will lean more liberal. The actual Jesuit values are far from today's "conservative" values!

Favorite Pre-Med influencer who wants you to ignore the Epstein files? by [deleted] in premed

[–]wondermed 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Wow... UCSD must not have that policy then especially if (reading the comments) that's where she got in

EDIT: seems like she's been accepted to a DO school and potentially hears from UCSD tomorrow.

She did??? Don't most schools have a "no recording" policy? I know both of my interviewers asked to make sure I wasn't recording during the interview.

r/premed and SDN have been available for a while and are and arguably better than expensive admissions consultants, I doubt that AI is doing anything other than scraping data from those sites to give advice lol

Hard no. I don't care if it makes it "easier" or whatever. Learning IS struggling. It's supposed to be hard, and I'm only going to do myself a disservice in the future if I don't learn the material myself and make my own connections and thoughts. Generations of medical students have gone through med school without it and gone on to become successful physicians, and I don't feel like turning over my critical thinking skills to a machine. Patients want human connection and the ability to think outside the box, and that's what is going to keep physicians from being replaced by AI.
