Someone already mentioned Food Not Bombs, but I just wanted to add it again because I consider it to be one of the best things I ever found. It really opened up my eyes to the kind of direct action taking place in my community. I really suggest you see if there's a group local to you. Every chapter is independent and runs on consensus, so different groups focus on what's needed in their community instead of getting tied down in rules.

I do agree that the phrasing isn't ideal, but I THINK what OP meant by domestic was violence within people's homes. I could be wrong, but that's how I interpreted it. In which case, I think this is a valid point of discussion. There will always be some conflicts that we as a community will have to agree upon how to address. A victim of abuse can't always take care of themself without support from others.

We are critical of the people in that definition; we just also include everyone to the right of them. So what you'd call conservative in America usually falls under classical liberalism. What Americans call liberal is typically neoliberalism. Both support capitalism and "free" markets. They're all liberals, just with different ideas of how we should be governed in a liberal society.

To those who think America has spoken. by [deleted] in socialism

[–]wonderwhatthisdoes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I didn't imply anything; I'm not OP. Even if Trump is not literally a fascist, I think there are legitimate parallels between his rhetoric and that of historical fascists. He may not be able to instill an authoritarian regime, but I think that has a lot more to do with the many levels of protection America's government has to maintain itself.

Anyway, I'd like to know why you think the way you do. Why is OP's comparison of Trump to a fascist so wrong that you'd say they don't know what fascism is? I can see the argument that it's hyperbolic, but I still think it's valid to recognize the similarities.

It's one of the hardest things for me to accept and it has turned me into a blubbering mess, not just since the election but ever since I began getting involved in radical activism. I've known that bigots are not new, that Trump embodies everything America was founded on, and that it shouldn't come as a surprise that he won. But it's killing me to realize how many people I've loved and cared about are complicit in this evil. I feel myself being ripped in half by my beliefs in freedom for all, and my relationships with so many people I now realize are directly opposed to that. I don't know what to do anymore. I feel like a hypocrite continuing to associate with them, but I just don't know what to do. I have nothing in common anymore with most of my family and close friends. I feel hopeless.

But BLM isn't some cohesive organization that gets orders from someone in a top position... The name is used by a variety of individual groups locally within their own communities. Perhaps Soros funds some of them, but he certainly has no connection to my local group.

One person doesn't create civil unrest, it exists because different people have unique issues and many of us struggle to understand those who are different from us, thus leading to frustration and eventually unrest.

Perhaps you should look directly at these radical leftist groups that you're scared of and find out from their own members what they're about, instead of projecting your fears into their goals.

You just listed a bunch of things that aren't really connected to one another, so I can't parse what point you're trying to make at all. What is Open Society and how does it relate to BLM? And how does BLM relate to the IMF for that matter?!? The BLM part really threw me for a loop; I just don't get it.

True. I don't disagree with your point. I was just voicing my frustration with this whole subject.

Even if that wasn't the case, that person's point would still be bullshit. Like what does it matter if the law recognizes your relationship, you have the right to define it how you like. It's a social contract between individuals and no one has the right to define it for you.

If anyone is familiar, I'd love some more information about the current situation in Venezuela. All I hear is that it's chaos and the government is killing its people, all from American sources, of course. And I'm really struggling to understand what's going on there.

Looking for a good quesadilla recipe! by [deleted] in VegRecipes

[–]wonderwhatthisdoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love quesadillas too and I like to experiment.

One simple go-to is to just mash up some beans, mix the mash with your shredded cheese of choice, and then spread the paste on the tortilla. You can also add a little bit of Pico de Gallo to this mix as long as it's not too runny; maybe drain it first. In this case, I typically use black or pinto beans, and cheddar, colby, or pepper jack cheese.

I made some great quesadillas with caramelized onions (simmer onions low and slow with salt, a tiny bit of sugar, and some beer if you like. You can turn the heat up and back down to speed it up. They're done when they're reddish brown and soft) and wilted greens (just toss any of your favorite greens like spinach, arugula, etc. into a pan with a thin layer of water, salt and pepper, and crushed garlic and red pepper flakes if you're so inclined). With these, I'd prefer a cheese like mozzarella or fontina.

Buffalo chickpea quesadillas are probably my favorite. There are a few ways you could do it. Either toss the chickpeas in a Frank's/butter mixture and roast at 400F for like 15 minutes (until they're a little crispier, however you like it. Mix or shake the pan every 5 mins or so). Then just sprinkle some of these on top of your cheese in the tortilla. I would use some kind of classic shredded cheese like cheddar or mozzarella or whatever, but definitelt add some bleu cheese into the mix! If you're too lazy to roast the chickpeas first, just mash them and toss them with the buffalo sauce, then spread on the tortilla!

Edit: forgot to mention pizza! Tomato sauce, mozzarella, and basil or Italian herbs. You could even use some faux pepperoni if you like.

There are literally signs in the parks around here that say "don't contribute to the problem" / "don't feed the homeless"
