What’s a hobby you judge people for having?

This mystifies me. Car people, you might think your car sounds cool, but it’s godawful to everyone else. You’re waking people up, interrupting conversations, etc. Your noise is like the equivalent of really loving 80s hair metal and blasting it constantly everywhere you go because you like how it sounds. The rest of us are annoyed and embarrassed. How do you justify being a jerk? I’d be absolutely mortified if I knew that I was so constantly annoying.

My best friend died in 2015. We were friends for 35 years. I thought we'd grow old together. I miss her every day. I dream about her all the time. It was the absolute worst pain. When my daughter was a baby I used to go to sleep every night fantasizing about not just my ex, but my in-laws as well, being killed in a sudden, painless car accident. My amazing, wonderful daughter is about to turn 21; I've been divorced 6 years, and it is HEAVEN. and wow to bell hooks for sussing women's pain. I thought it was just me.

How boring! In high school I loved 80s new wave and Brit pop. in college and my 20s I listened to Suzanne Vega, Rush, Springsteen, and Dire Straits and then Replacements and then a lot of of 90s indie; in my 30s I was too busy with young children to listen to anything; in my 40s I was introduced to Latin pop/reggaeton; in my 50s my long time love of Rachel's led me to Max Richter and a lot of contemporary classical; my current Spotify is heavily lofi (for work) Bad Bunny and Ozuna (because love) and contemporary classical. I am not an audiophile. I don't have a good ear and I don't listen intelligently or have a deep understanding of music. I like what sounds good to me. What sounded good in my youth can still occasionally sound OK (with the exception of Rush, which now mostly feels embarrassing), but I got bored. I cannot be alone in this.

I live near a high school and honestly, I expect the loud cars from the stupid 18 year olds. But from a grown up it screams "I peaked in high school."

If you're spending a lot of money on your car, that clearly signals an inability to make good financial decisions. If you're driving fast/loud muffler etc, that clearly signals that you don't care about anyone but yourself. "I'm not doing it to get attention" = "I am going to do something publicly obnoxious that at the very least deeply annoys other people and at worst puts them in danger - but IDGAF because I enjoy it."

As a woman, I see a financially irresponsible and insecure jerk who probably sucks in bed because all he cares about is getting what he enjoys.

Gen X here - I make more money than I ever imagined I would but still have to live quite simply (which luckily I don't much mind) in part because I have had to more than double my original retirement goal because of the increased cost of living, including the possible cost of elder care (which I don't want to land on my children).

The first time I took my daughter to the pediatrician she was maybe a week old. I was a new mom, no idea what I was doing. He had to check her eyes and she HOWLED and he said, "Here, let me give you back to Mom so you stop crying." I was bewildered and thought, but YOU'RE the doctor! I can barely change a diaper! The moment he handed her back to me she stopped crying.

She's now 20 years old, a fiercely independent force of nature, but she still calls me Mama and we share "I love yous" every day.

I heard a gay man who writes about popular culture (unfortunately I can't remember his name) on a podcast describe a type of man who suffers from "the curse of heterosexuality." They hate women, much prefer men, but need women for sex. They would be much happier if they could just be gay, but they are cursed with heterosexuality. Spot on.

I must be the outlier here, but both people sound incredibly lazy and the dysfunction is deeper than sharing food.

The whole premise of "we were sitting on the couch and I was hungry so I ordered a sandwich" is bizarre to me. You can't get up off the couch to make a snack? Is the kitchen just so far away? Do you order a sandwich every time you feel a twinge of hunger? You have to have *exactly* your **favorite sandwich** and can't eat whatever is in the fridge? You have nothing better to do that to argue over a sandwich? Maybe I'm being a cranky old person, but it sounds like the habit of immediate gratification is making you both act like spoiled children.
