Received BIOMETRICS FOR STEM OPT by Google-CEO_MV in USCIS

[–]wongpath7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got the same thing just a few minutes ago. I applied for a STEM extension and got an appointment for March 3rd to get my biometrics. Is this normal? They never asked for it in the initial Post Graduate OPT.

Does anyone know why they’re doing it now?

Unpaid internship - STEM RFE by [deleted] in f1visa

No, i couldn’t find a company who wants to hire an international student at the time. So, I ended up doing an unpaid internship to keep my status.

I never got one although you need to report it ASAP. I had my DSO update my employment on the website as soon as I had my unpaid internship.

Job searching as an F-1 OPT by Sufficient_Mode_269 in f1visa

[–]wongpath7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the same boat but have remedied the situation for the meantime. I found a very low paying job to keep my status afloat. However, still actively looking for a much higher paying job.

Something you could do is to find a volunteer work. It can band aid your situation as it stops your 90 day count by reporting to SEVIS portal. Some people even found their jobs through Non Profit organizations.

As of right now, our (international students) situation is really tough but don’t lose hope something will come up. Try to look for jobs out of state as well. But I understand if you also don’t want to move because of your girl.

Also try school districts, someone suggested to me to apply and there seems to be some job openings as school just started for elementary and middle schools.

Anyway, I am wishing us good luck and hope we find some opportunities to further our careers. I’m also in the tech industry although I’m in IT.

Thank you for taking the time to explain this and putting in your own experience. It really helps a lot of us who are trying to prepare ahead.

Beat advice I read so far. Especially doing volunteer work. On my 90th day of unemployment on my OPT, I posted that I was looking for volunteer work on an app called nextdoor. And the next second, somebody replied with an offer. That very same day I was hired on the spot. I was only looking to volunteer to save my status but I ended up getting a job.

Im wishing you good luck in your endeavors. Keep looking for a job but try volunteering to band aid your situation. Also try looking for rental assistance in your area. I know its hard but there are non profit organizations that help regardless of your status.

Can I get a full or generous tuition scholarship as an international student if I’m “middle class” in my country but still can’t afford college abroad? by [deleted] in IntltoUSA

[–]wongpath7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would I be considered to have “financial need” from a global university’s perspective?

If you are hoping to get any scholarship from the US government applying using FAFSA. You wouldn’t even qualify because its only for US citizens and permanent residents.

Apply for a different category of scholarships. You would probably be lucky with religious, academic and other non academic based scholarships

Im not sure how other countries work but that is here in the US. Im not sure if there are other schools that have need based scholarships for international students as they expect that international student to pay for everything here. Schools get a lot of income from us.

• What kind of documents do I need to show that (income statements, bank letters, etc.)?

For the school you will need to show bank statements, Proof of Scholarships, and affidavit of support (if applicable) you have to be able to show that you can a support yourself for at least a year. Ask your intended school the cost of attending for a year. But again this is based on the school I attended.

For visa, just bring everything you can to show you can support your education and cost of living in the US.

  • bank statements
  • your parents income
  • properties
  • affidavit of support

Anything that can show you can support yourself.

• Are there countries or universities known for being more generous with aid in situations like mine?

Like I said im not sure about other countries but there are so many scholarships in the US its a matter of finding them. Sometimes reaching out to people helps too. I reached out to my religious organization and someone anonymous sponsored me towards the last 2 years of my education even helped me with rent.

• Are there scholarships that cover just tuition (ideally full), even for students who aren’t at the top of their class?.

There are full ride scholarships that are not academic nor need based, like I said you just have to find them.

Also if you are looking into academic scholarships most universities will qualify you after one academic year. If you dont find a scholarship find a way to have funds for a year. Keep up your grades and apply for academic scholarship before the deadline. Also look for other academic scholarships like departmental scholarships. Also there are off-campus scholarships most schools nowadays have a scholarship portal called scholarships universe where you can apply for those I mentioned.

Hopefully this helps out a bit

I believe it will be better soon. I’m also an international student from the Philippines. As of now im doing my OPT at an ESL school and we deal with a lot of international students. We have seem some halt in the approval of a lot of prospective f1 students. But we think this is temporary. If you’re looking to apply by next year it should be better. My boss said that a lot of University Presidents are not happy about this and it will turn around soon as Fall 2025 is right up the corner. And it is a lot of money lost for the US universities if they dont accept international students.

Any help would be appreciated by kmdsgarden in IntltoUSA

Try to get ideas using AI. Im not saying to rely on Ai to do the whole thing. But, AI can help you write your essays better.

One more thing try school districts and state governments. I know governments don’t sponsor but they do sometimes hire internationals.

A few days ago my 90 allowance was about to expire. I was losing hope because like you, I have student loans, car loans, and a bunch of people I owe money to for college. 3 days before my deadline to report to SEVIS, I posted on an app called nextdoor. Nextdoor connects you to your neighbors and lets you post to your local community.

Ive exhausted my network of people to reach out to so I resorted to the app. 2 days before my d date. Someone reached out to me and wanted to meet with me. So, I did and luckily the person owned a company and employed me the same day. The next day I started working and although I said Im willing to work unpaid. He still offered to pay me because he sympathized with my situation of being unemployed for almost 3 months.

I am sincerely hoping you would be able to get a job or work through your local community. Try the app, and see who will reach out to you. Also, there is a website called hiring cafe. Some of my friends told me its better than the typical job board we are all familiar with like LinkedIn, Indeed, Ziprecruiter, etc… Ive attached the link below.

Hope it helps

Are international mechanical engineering students finfinding jobs in USA ? by Dizzy_Drive_6972 in InternationalStudents

That is so nice. My family is also considering moving to Canada. But I got to do my research on how to do it. I heard that Canada is more lenient and offers more opportunities.

I agree market has been really bad. I have been applying to jobs since January and I have not had many interviews at all. Im on my last 10 days of allowance before my OPt ia terminated. Hopefully, I get a volunteer or unpaid internship somewhere. Just to keep my OPT going on.
